I can never get enough of detectives. Charlie Chan, Mr Moto, Sherlock Holmes, Mr Wong, Nero Wolfe, Sam Spade, Marlowe, Thin Man etc . A pleasure and privilege to still be able to see these great films.
i have had a few on Paper! the mr moto novels better. the sam spade, "the operative"... one Operative was the novel that becsme Yojimbo w kurosawa / mifune, and the good the bad and the ugly..... ! homeless now library Lost...

At the end of this movie Jimmy (Victor Yung) gets drafted into the Army. In real life he served as an Air Force Captain of Intelligence. Impressive.

Very interesting. Thanks for that bit of info. Quite a few actors became skilled intelligence agents, Leslie Howard for example. He gave his life for Britain.
Obviously, Victor was a good deal more intelligent than "Jimmie!"
I could watch Charlie Chan movies over and over and enjoy them again
These old mystery movies which are injected with a little bit of comedy, are very entertaining. The lack of special effects technology meant the actors really had to know how to act. I was not born until almost 10 years after this movie was made and still enjoy watching these fairly low budget classics from time to time as they did have good story lines.
Not so low budget as they travel a lot and the decor is luxurious!
My mother and I would watch Charlie Chan movies all the time I miss her so much but Charlie's movies make me remember all the time we spent together watching Charlie Chan

As a 12-year old, you surely didn't understand the plots. Even adults mostly don't.
This is a very entertaining "Charlie Chan" movie. It is enjoyable to watch with a good audio and a crystal clear print.
They don't make movies like these anymore. It's a shame.
"coffee and cigarettes" sounds like a recitation of popular vices,.........alcohol, weed etc.

Every time I think I have seen the best of Charlie Chan, I watch another I'm amazed again. While the average people in the 40's didn't dress as they do in this movie, it was with the upper classes. I love the clothes, lovely houses, apartments, and the use of the English language. It's nice to watch a movie and not have to hear foul four letter words, and naked backsides.

Herschel was the costume designer for this flick. His single name jumps out of the lead-in credits (much shorter crew lists back then) of some 150 "b-grade" movies of a similar genre as this from the 30s to 50s. He died in his early 40s.
Funny how it's the VERY LAST THING I love about Charlie Chan movies. I can get that stuff anywhere. It's something else about Charlie Chan. The movies feel like a long hug.
This was my least favorite I think because THE BLACK CAMEL was so extraordinary. Also, THIS movie demonstrated the old Hollywood favorite casting method of utterly beautiful young women and bald middle-aged men. Not quite as bad as most movies made in the beloved heyday, but Charlie Chan movies usually didn't pull that. In this one it was stark because it isn't usually done. I mean, the sons Jimmy and Tommy alone provided women with eye candy as we enjoyed a good murder mystery. The clothes are beautiful, which makes them average, the backgrounds average in the same way, IMO, like in all mystery movies from the forties. There's something that sets Charlie Chan apart and it just IS NOT the decor and dresses!

Iris Wong was one of the better foils for Jimmy Chan. I liked her bubbly attitude and cute smile.
She's a doll-liked her also in 'Charlie Chan in Reno'. Mama Chan would have loved to have her for a daughter-in-law.

I could binge watch Charlie Chan, Sherlock Holmes and Perry Mason all the time. I love the black & white era so much more than the current movies with the awful language and violence.

Sidney Toler was absolutely perfect as Charlie Chan.
Just dicovered Charlie Chan. What a pleasant experience!
I am partial to the Charlie Chan movies that have Harold Huber as supporting actor.
In this film he played Chief Souso.
In another Chan film called "in the darkness" he played a bumbling Inspector in Paris during the Munich conference where France was alarmed Hitler will BBC attack France.
A third Chan movie called "In Monte Carlo" Huber played chief official helping Chan solve a crime.
In a 4th Chan movie, Harold Huber showed off his amazing talent for using different accents in "murder in New York" he played an NYPD police Lt. again helping Chan solve a murder.
Huber had such a deep New York accent that Chan actually said he could not understand him.
It took me awhile to figure out it was him.

Huber is indeed a standout player in all of his roles.
Another great one. I can't decide whether I like Toler or Oland better at playing Chan. They're both entertaining as hell. I can see why these movies were so well liked during WW2, they were patriotic and swept people away to exotic locales with excitement and suspense and some humor for a while. Btw, I sensed what was going on with the cigarettes near the end of the movie and was right (though there was a bit more to it than I had figured).
Toler and Oland. played their roles to perfection, given the era. As far as I am concerned, there is NO other Chan's, worth my time.
Toler had a better sense of humor...or a better way to cover the comment or lighter expression
Both Oland and Toler have their good points. Both are fantastic detectives, and both come across as experienced. I think Oland's portrayal normally came across as the gentler, more fatherly and patient one, though. Toler's portrayal was just a bit more abrasive, and he was more tired of the mistakes his kids made.
The only time I can think of Oland's portrayal being abrasive at all is when his overly-eager but goofy assistant in "Black Camel" opened a door and blew the torn-up pieces of evidence off the table. Oland then said "Koshimo, you are Zebra!" and then Koshimo asked something like "What is that?" and then Oland said "Sport model Jackass!"
Granted, I don't have a complete picture of Oland's portrayal of Charlie Chan; after all, 4 of the movies were lost in a fire in 1937, and no new prints of them have come to the public.
With this virus, these movies keep up peoples spirits. Charlie Chan, though, always keeps peoples spirits up.
According to current doctrin of political correctness these movies "should be" removed because the stereotypical depiction of a chinese MIGHT offend someone.

Chuck Berger Thanks for mentioning Mr. Moto. He didn't get nearly the number of films as Charlie Chan, but Peter Lorre was superb. If there are any Chan fans who haven't seen Mr. Moto, they should check them out.

Many years ago I worked at an Old Time dance (1960's). A Charlie Chan movie started at about half past midnight. I would rush to clean up after the dance so I would get home to watch the movie, I was aways very tired but I really loved J Carrol Naish as Charlie Chan. I would tuff out the tired feeling BUT I ALWAYS fell asleep 10 minutes before the end of the movie and would wake up for the credits, if there where any. I am sure you realise what the meant. I NEVER FOUND OUT WHO DUN IT!!! And here it is just after midnight and tired agin BUT with You Tube I can watch the move AFTER I have had a good sleep. Thank heavens for You Tube.
You seem to refer to "The New Adventures of Charlie Chan" half-hour TV crime dramas (produced in 1957) with J. Carrol Naish as and "updated" Chan with James Hong as his Number One Son. These are really nice in my opinion, and were often shot at least in part on location throughout Los Angeles, England, and Europe. A few of these pop up on UA-cam on occasion, and the entire collection of 39 episodes can be purchased over the Internet.

They certainly dressed very well in those days, yes not your everyday people but the well to do in these movie establishments but they certainly put the so called well dressed people of today to utter shame. Very fashionable elegant and sophisticated. 8:30 what a beautiful dress.
Well, froggy: The average person esp women had a much greater array of classic clothes, cut from expensive cloth Tailors were more common in those ages. Quality garments were made for every day women not just the upper class. The average women would have 2 or 3 expensive suits with shoes and bags to match. I should know my Mother was one of these women and my seven aunts. Nowadays, the closets are filled with cheap replicas bought at Sears, Eatons, and many smaller shops. The closets are stuffed with many belts, purses and shoes that are cheap knockoffs. The tailors have folded their tents and become bus drivers.

I routinely juggle Charlie Chan movies (Oland/Toler), Mr. Wong (Karloff) and Mr. Moto (Lorre) movies.

I have been a fan of the 1930-50's mystery movies for most of my long adult life. Sherlock Holmes, Charlie Chan, Hercule Poirot, The Saint, The Thin Man, The Falcon, and Boston Blackie, are the ones that I like the best, but there many others that I have enjoyed as well. I also enjoy the serial type movies of the same era, such as Flash Gordon, Ace Drummond, Sky King, Mystery Squadron, The Perils of Pauline and alot more.

This is one of my favorite Charlie Chan films. It also seems to be a fairly close version of a former Chan film "The Black Camel" from the early thirties. Same plot but Camel was filmed on location in Honolulu and has great shots of the scenery.
Love the intro, & that Latin beat Jimmy Chan really got jazzed up w/ that Latin Beat. My Dad introduced me to all the Charlie Chan movies. Love me some CHARLIE CHAN. Of course my Dad's name was JIMMY & he was # 1 son when he was growing up.
B Wayland The song Lola dances and a later song she sings , was also sung by Don Ameche and Carmen Miranda in a movie they did with Alice Fay
And to think that actor that played Jimmy Chan was a house boy. His employer a woman suggested he audition for the role and he got it. Sadly Sen Yung died in poverty. When I think of all of these actors who feel they are entitled to great riches, and some spent their lives trying to make a living and didn’t do as well.
Stumbled on to these Charlie Chan flicks as well as the few Mr. Wong featuring Boris Karloff and introduced to me one of the all time great film curmudgeon's, Grant Withers. Retired for over three years now (64), I've had the time, usually in the evening while preparing for sleep, I'll watch atleast one or two and inevitably will fall asleep to the next one that UA-cam has lined up in their 'thumbnail' queue.
@@robertawilson549 Sen Yung had a pretty good acting career. Most people know him as Hop Sing, the cook on Bonanza - he was in over 100 episodes. He also had a recurring role as one of the Shaolin monks in the early 70s TV program "Kung Fu" with David Carradine. My favorite role of his was Joe in "Across the Pacific" with Humphrey Bogart.
Love these old movies. These ladies had class. I'm afraid this quality is gone for a while.

totally agree with so many, love the ability to watch these movie's that don't need to use fowl language and allow the viewer to imagine the violence. just wish youtube would show all the Chan films and not just the earlier one's. allow us to viewer all of Sidney's Chan films

Jimmy (Victor Sen Yung) later went on to play Hop Sing on the Bonanza series. Growing up I watched every Chan movie that came on the TV, as well as all the Bonanza series, and I never made the connection Jimmy/Hop Sing until I was much older.

Huber seems to enjoy making this movie; if nothing else, he smiles in several scenes when he has no need to (though, he could be smiling at bloopers that required re-shooting scenes).
Movie was released in September 1941, before Pearl Harbor but while the draft was in effect.

Victor Sen Yung (Jimmy Chan) was a great actor; was also great in "The Letter" with Bette Davis and went on to play Hop Sing on Bonanza. 😄😄👍👍

Okay, got it. The Feathered Serpent. Stars Roland Winters (who's actually younger than Keye Luke) as CC, Keye Luke as Lee Chan, and Victor Sen Yang as Tommy Chan. This is the second last CC film made with Roland Winters and the last one with Victor. 1948, I think. Or 1949. Not too sure of the year.

IMO this is one of the finest entries in the series. It was nice to see Harold Huber's character played as intelligent and shrewd, instead of the usual bumbling, yelling and dumbish character he played in the other CC films such as "City In Darkness" and "At Monte Carlo."
Michael Mantle although it s a remake of the 1931 (same year as dracula) The bĺack camel with bela lugosi in the victor jory role. Also the soùnd era debut for robert young
HH was a remarkable intellectually gifted student but chose acting in B programmers instead of the world of ideas and brainy pursuits
He was such a talented actor. Sadly, he died fairly young.
I think that “The Black Camel” was one of a couple of CC books made into movies with the same title.
The other was Behind That Curtain
- which was barely a CC movie.
I always thought that it was a shame that the original few books were never all made into movies.
“The House Without a Key” was wonderful.
Mary Beth Hughes was probably overjoyed to play a loud, sassy wench...instead of the usual roles.

Harold Hubert is an incredible actor I've enjoyed his performances in a few other Charlie Chan movies, but I like both Sidney Toler and Warner Oland both are amazing actors.
Harold Huber passed away too young, 49 years old. I am a big fan also. He is great Charlie Chan in Monte Carlo!

Well ... "no. 1 son" is pretty ridiculous in this episode and completely unrealistic. With such a calm father he would never have become so hyperactive.

Love this Charlie Chan movie and Victor Jory's role as an urbane sophisticate is quite a departure from his role as "Yancy", a heartless hired killer, in "Dodge City" starring Errol Flynn.
Iris Wong (play role of Lili) very cute! Can see why #2 son crazy about her.
She really was, and her performance is great as well. Sadly, her acting career was farily short before she took a job with an airline, and she died just shy of her 69th birthday.
