I think the closest "modern" equivalent would be the sinking of the Blücher by Norwegian cannons placed on the sides of the Drøbak Strait. At that time (1939) Norway had a whopping thirteen vessels in their navy and about 500 personnel. They had two more ships that were being overhauled at the time, so they don't count. At least four of their "ships" were small patrol boats, and if I remember right, three of them were minesweepers. Regardless, the Blücher was popped by two monstrous 280mm shells from the battery at South Kaholm in Oscarborg. I think in total she was hit by 45 rounds from land-based cannons, from 280mm down to 57mm, but the big boys were the ones who allowed for supporting fire to sink her. Had that battery commander (Eriksen?) been a puss, Germany would have floated right up Drøbak Sound and captured the Norwegian royal family, taking Norway in one lick. Technically Russia never declared war on Ukraine. There are reasons why this matters, for example, Russian law does not allow the military to send conscripts or the home guard into battle when there is not a declared war. (Some believe that conscripts have been sent regardless, it certainly wouldn't be the first time Putin has ignored inconvenient laws). I believe Russian laws also enable certain economic measures to be taken in the event of a war, like taking over certain manufacturing facilities by the state for production of material. Basically, they aren't really surprised that Ukraine fought back, they're just saying that it's time to formally declare war so that Putin has more authority to mobilize their full strength.

When this started I didn't believe most Russians would be ok with this war and Putin but weeks later I'm doubting myself. Even in the 60's 70's and 80's the public in Russia was less ignorant.
Since the 80s there has been massive funding cuts to education in Russia. Critical thinking, plus the ability to navigate and analyse many forms of communication, might be beyond the general capability of a lot of Russians. And it seems empathy also evades them, not all, but many, based on observations over the last 50 days. Sadly, education underfunding is not problem only limited to Russia.

I think the closest "modern" equivalent would be the sinking of the Blücher by Norwegian cannons placed on the sides of the Drøbak Strait. At that time (1939) Norway had a whopping thirteen vessels in their navy and about 500 personnel. They had two more ships that were being overhauled at the time, so they don't count. At least four of their "ships" were small patrol boats, and if I remember right, three of them were minesweepers. Regardless, the Blücher was popped by two monstrous 280mm shells from the battery at South Kaholm in Oscarborg. I think in total she was hit by 45 rounds from land-based cannons, from 280mm down to 57mm, but the big boys were the ones who allowed for supporting fire to sink her. Had that battery commander (Eriksen?) been a puss, Germany would have floated right up Drøbak Sound and captured the Norwegian royal family, taking Norway in one lick. At least that was their mission.
Anyway, yeah, Norway had a "navy", but they didn't have all that much to do with the sinking of the Blücher other than some of it being around when it happened.

Technically Russia never declared war on Ukraine. There are reasons why this matters, for example, Russian law does not allow the military to send conscripts or the home guard into battle when there is not a declared war. (Some believe that conscripts have been sent regardless, it certainly wouldn't be the first time Putin has ignored inconvenient laws). I believe Russian laws also enable certain economic measures to be taken in the event of a war, like taking over certain manufacturing facilities by the state for production of material.
Basically, they aren't really surprised that Ukraine fought back, they're just saying that it's time to formally declare war so that Putin has more authority to mobilize their full strength.

Very often Russians treat Ukrainians like inferior people, think of it as black people in the American south in the 1960s, good enough to clean your house but you'd never tell your family you were dating one. This invasion thing is a hundreds of years old Russian tradition, if you want it just take it for your own.

When this started I didn't believe most Russians would be ok with this war and Putin but weeks later I'm doubting myself. Even in the 60's 70's and 80's the public in Russia was less ignorant.
Since the 80s there has been massive funding cuts to education in Russia. Critical thinking, plus the ability to navigate and analyse many forms of communication, might be beyond the general capability of a lot of Russians. And it seems empathy also evades them, not all, but many, based on observations over the last 50 days. Sadly, education underfunding is not problem only limited to Russia.
There is a reason in a large population that propaganda is dangerous to the public discourse. It is why it needs to be stomped out in the US as well. You can't function properly with multiple realities in peoples heads.
State news is non-stop propaganda and the Russian government is arresting protestors.
Not easy to get a counter-movement started when the leaders keep getting arrested.
The Russian people are scared for their lives. State polling asks questions and the people know what to say. Nothing released by the government is a real and accurate picture of the people or anything else. This is why Russia is failing. The entire country is built on lies.
