  • In this video, I begin the sealing process on my concrete countertops. I'm using TUNG OIL, a natural, *food-safe* (see below) product that will seal and condition the countertops after several applications. Let's get started.
    *PLEASE NOTE: Natural Tung Oil is considered non-toxic on surfaces when fully cured (30 days). It is NEVER intended to be directly consumed in any form. Please do your own research before using.*

    We tung oil sealed (and then used a butcher block wax) our diy concrete counters 3 years ago and they are holding up beautifully. They definitely get marked and stained by liquids etc, but I just sand them down and re-wax them and they look brand new. Yours look great!

      Hey, Thanks. The tung oil was the best treatment we found and it holds up well. I also like that it is non-toxic and easily re-applied without much fuss. These countertops were the first attempt I made at pouring concrete tops and it is a task that you get only one chance to do right. There are some things I'd do differently but overall we are very pleased with them.

      Concrete is becoming popular as countertop material (some even make their sinks from it). This is my first-ever attempt at it and I like what it looks like so far. The Tung Oil is food safe when dry and can be added as needed over the years to bring back the finish.
      Big FLOODS in parts of BC last week! They've declared a state of emergency and brought the Army in to help. Yesterday they rationed gasoline to 7 gallons per visit to the station (tanker traffic has been unable to get through on many washed out highways to re-fill the stations). The floods are a few hundred miles from us. It reminded me of the big flood you guys experienced in Tennessee a few months back.

    Great Job! I appreciate the "character" finish you have -- I've just finished my own with a heavily exposed aggregate finish and loads of concrete "character" as well!!! Never considered Tung oil, but may use it once my Cheng sealant expires.

      Thanks for your comment. I like the character finish of our countertops and I think it adds a hand-made look that is fitting for this rustic style. I learned about tung oil from another UA-cam video where the fellow found it better than many higher-priced finishes. So far, it has worked flawlessly on our contertops. All the best...Take Care

    That's looking good! Your work is going to have people thinking you won the Lottery and had some high grade contractor come in and do the job. I like the finish and the texture. It's turning out great!

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  2 роки тому +1

      I think it's going to be alright. I am liking the look of the finish, warts and all. I'm finding that the lighter spots are beginning to soak up the oil too. I feel good that I'm not putting a harsh chemical onto the counters. This project reminds me of what an old timer told me one time about rebuilding an automatic transmission. He said, "You have one chance to get it right". However, in this case, the end product will be good no matter what: tool marks, minor imperfections, etc. all enhance the look.

    If you mix only cement in water and pour it over the concrete then finish it with a trovel. It will not absorb anything after that.

    I just put tung oil on my counters and I am wondering if it protects against grease or butter? I have a wax I bought to put on as well

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  Рік тому +2

      I bought wax too but have not appled it. So far, I am relying on the several coats of Tung Oil that I initially applied. Grease and butter seem to wipe off and do not penetrate or stain through the tung oil. Wax is advised but so far the oil has been sufficient. Thanks for your question.

    They look great ,How’s it holding up is it still repelling water?

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  2 роки тому +4

      Yes, the concrete is still repelling water after almost a year. When I made the countertops, I bought a concrete wax but I never got around to applying it because the tung oil has held up so well.

    Can you tell me if it is possible to put anything in the tung oil to color it? I sanded a previous brown color from our existing concrete counter top and it is hard to get it to look consistent. I want it too look more natural again. Before I give up hope, I wonder if you have any advice about adding a few drips of a stain I might be able to add to the Tung oil to create a little more uniformity?

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  2 роки тому

      I am unaware of any stain that you might use. I did notice that the more coats I applied, the darker and richer the color was. But mine turned out a dark, oily-gray, not brownish. I've read that Carnauba Wax should be applied to create protection for the concrete but I haven't done this yet. Perhaps there is colored Carnauba wax you can get?? Best of luck and thanks for watching!!
