Mine too! I like to keep up on what's closed and what's changed too. I remember driving past the El Rancho when it was closed. It was eerie. There are so many behemoths now on The Strip. In 1984, (age 12) I took a ride in a small elevator to the top of the Gateway Arch in St Louis. The tour guide gave a heavy emphasis to the fact that no workers died in its construction. She said the higher the monument or building, the higher the fatality rate.
Anything built in that time was screwed over. The Venetian still has a crane that hasn't moved in 10+ years due to halted construction of a planned condo tower from 2007. The resort draped a huge building drape over it to cover the unsightliness.

@Safwaan I worked in the marketing department. I had no complaints about the company I worked for but this job was definitely a headache for us. I worked on some of the pool deck renderings that are not shown in this video. The ones in the video are fairly outdated.
I'm hearing this: company founded - executives hired and paid huge salaries, bonuses, perks, benefits- begin projects they never plan to complete - file for bankruptcy - - sell project divide loot - honest taxpayers foot the bill for this - begin again .... This is what's wrong with our economy.
"honest taxpayers foot the bill for this" how? If corporations and banks are doing this it's not taxpayers money. It's when the gov't pisses away money on things such as Solyndra and all the gov't give away programs pols think up that it is the honest taxpayer's money. That's why capitalism is so much better than socialism, it's not your money in capitalism.

Whenever I go to Vegas, I stay at the Plaza in the Fremont district. It was really dumpy back in the day, and then suddenly all the rooms had BRAND new fixtures and bedding and it was GORGEOUS. I found out later, they were able to buy all that stuff for pennies on the dollar at auction because a strip hotel had gone bankrupt during construction and they had to sell off all the assets. That hotel? The FontainBleu. I LOVE the decor at the Plaza. And the price is right for me.

Excellent history Jake, thank you. That is exactly how all of the larger casino/resorts on The Strip operate. If they don’t have something on property, it’s probably at a sister property.
My thought is that Vegas should have preserved and marketed some of the older resorts as heritage venues rather than blowing them away to try for the next big (literally) thing.
Yeah… idk about there being a magical time before corporations in vegas. The entire history of the city, from its founding, is based on gaudy excess and making quick bucks. Preserving historical vegas locations would have been nice, but the culture doesn’t really allow that. The old casinos had some incredible historical value, don’t get me wrong, but the reality is that the managers and land developers had the same ‘disposable money sponge’ perspective back then as they do today.
A London resort….. for authenticity they would near to smear all the public walkways in dog-shit, ensure all the servers are obese angry fat pigs that look orange with the amount of fake tan they have on and pump the smell of vomit through the air-con system.
Finally after all of these years of shenanigans, the construction is moving forward. The logo and Fontainebleau name went up a few weeks ago. 10/2022 Let's see how this goes.
I used to live in Las Vegas in the 90s, and vacationed there for years before that. When I lived there, I ran a record store on the north end of the strip (I actually caught a glimpse of the building in one of the aerial shots in this video). Even back then, 25 years ago, the north end was a mess. I guess nothing's changed. Las Vegas used to be a great town, but since the corporations took everything over...not so much anymore. Looking VERY forward to Closed For Storm, Jake!
Consider yourself lucky to be gone. The city is a shadow of its former self! Bad enough there are mundane mega resorts with no character to speak of, but they're charging for parking, resort fees, and the bums are allowed to sleep in the doorways of resorts like Harrah's and Ceasar's! No joke, they are turning The Strip into SF! Most buffets are still closed too! They reopened the buffets only for Circus Circus, Excalibur and Baccanal (and you have to make a reservation for that one!).

10:05 "[Icahn] had sold off all of the fittings intended to go inside Fontainbleau" Anyone who thinks Carl Icahn buys a property to "keep it intact" is deluded. His intentions should have been perfectly clear once he jumped into the bidding. Carl Icahn is a liquidation specialist investor _only._ That's what Carl Icahn does. I'd have been surprised if he _didn't_ intend to strip the entire property bare of all valuable assets to sell them. That he sold the interior fittings quickly was likely only the first salvo (and low hanging fruit). His intent was almost certainly to strip bare everything worth any value and sell it, leaving only the concrete shell of a building left over. Then, he'd collapse that and sell the rebar and concrete scrap and whatever else he could salvage from the demolition. In the end, the land would look like it did before anything was ever built onto it. Then, Icahn would sell the bare land to another investor only to start the building process all over. Stripping bare and selling is exactly how Carl Icahn makes his money. However, he would likely weigh the value of stripping it bare versus holding onto it and letting almost the completed structure increase in value. He likely thought he could make more money by holding and selling rather than potentially losing money by hiring people to strip it bare.

In 1984, (age 12) I took a ride in a small elevator to the top of the Gateway Arch in St Louis. The tour guide gave a heavy emphasis to the fact that no workers died in its construction. She said the higher the monument or building, the higher the fatality rate.

Whenever I go to Vegas, I stay at the Plaza in the Fremont district. It was really dumpy back in the day, and then suddenly all the rooms had BRAND new fixtures and bedding and it was GORGEOUS. I love your videos. When I was in high school some friends and I would explore abandoned homes. So much fun. And by the way. . . I'll be sure to see: Closed for The Storm. :)
As someone who lives in Vegas, this was the result of all the money getting pushed into the “city center” hotels, (cosmo, aria, Vdara) and now these are considered the top hotels in the city the fountain blue will likely be collapsed or finished and become a non gaming Marriott!
Now y’all ain’t gots no water!
Hey Jake, you should do the abandoned series on Great Basin Adventure: Reno’s abandoned theme park… good content btw
10:05 "[Icahn] had sold off all of the fittings intended to go inside Fontainbleau"
Anyone who thinks Carl Icahn buys a property to "keep it intact" is deluded.
