HHBW! Thanks for sharing Gary. Great info. Cheers!

That was pretty much my same view, Gary. Keep the ole Barley Crusher at .039ish and you are good to go for a lot less money. I just can't see paying that much money for a perdy mill that they jacked the price up for a hopper made of smoked plastic. Cheers!

+Chris Meek Yeah the crush was similar, however it made short work of the grains though, fortunately they had a $50 special offer for orders over 250, I do think its slightly better on the crush but maybe not for the price

Like You said the True Test will be when You brew and how the Mill effects Your efficiency. It's time to brew. Cheers Gary!

+Pooka NC well that is tricky thing efficiency can be deceiving, grain husk particles can artificially inflate your numbers if your crush is too fine, leaving you with some astringency specially on light beers I.E. pilsners and Kolsch for example. unless my efficiency does not drop I consider it a success because i see less busted up husks. Cheers

I'd brew 2 Light beers (that perfect Pilsner You're after.) and that will let you know if any off flavors are in there, as well as how the numbers turn out. It's a Nice Looking Mill regardless and I really like the Preset Marks on the side.

Yeah, I don't know why I want to concur this style, I guess a clean crisp Pilsner with repeatably is what I personally measure as a brewer who has his/her process firmly under control. Personally the style is not my favorite style, but i use it as a personal measure of understanding

+MaineBrewGuy Gary the way I understand it, gravity readings will only measure dissolved substances, so non-dissolved particles from grain husks/hops don't affect gravity readings.

you are correct sir! however when you make flour you dissolve more, you make it readily available to hydrolyze, which increases efficiency now the grain husk themselves aren't absorbed rather more or less impart, but the two are conversely proportional

nice review gary....i have this mill and freaking LOVE it.....SJ and Tyler have it and absolutely HATE it, they've had issues with a stuck roller.....i really like the size of this hopper [ i think it holds 12 lbs ] and the ability to wet mill.....all in all, it was a decent purchase for me but i agree that there are cheaper options out there that do the same........cheers!

+FItLetsBrewIt ! I only had it get stuck once but that was because the drill/mill was running and I poured the grain in while it was turning and it got stuck. all I did was stop the drill and start it back up and it took off.. I wonder if it was set up properly

I'm curious if you had any problems running the grain through? I bought one of these and its a piece of junk, I tried many different settings and it constantly jammed up. Not to mention it came with the side lexan pieces broken. I'm with you, don't waste your money on this junk.

Nice review Gary. Hmmm that's interesting. Here I am with a 0.039" gap setting on my Monster Mill 2.0. I wonder if that's set too fine now. I've never had it wider, but I have tried 0.035" and there was a lot of flour.

if you change it now be prepared for a bit of an efficiency adjustment to your system, its ok though people worry or boast about efficiency, if the beer comes out a little better and your efficiency is not high who cares, right?

Exactly. I care about efficiency to a point. I'm not fanatical about it though.

+Strat Beer yeah it's pretty nice not sure its worth the $$, If you have a two roller knurled mill it no need to upgrade in my early opinion

Very nice looking mill for sure! Was there a difference in mash efficiency?

+Dan ABA I don't know yet I have not brewed with it yet, too damn cold

Nice review! Was the gap the same on both mills?

    • @chubbymermaidbrewing
      @chubbymermaidbrewing  8 років тому

+George Schroeder basically the same the standard grain crush mill was set to .050. the bottom roller on the Captain Crush was set to .045 thousandths of an inch, but the deeper groves on the Captain Crush probably makes the gap the same, cheers
