  • Our last episode introduced you to the "Scratch 80". It's an Illinois farm severely lacking in habitat beneficial to wildlife. Casey and Louie assessed the biggest needs on the farm and cover was one of the biggest. With that in mind, the first step in improving the habitat was to get native warm season grasses planted. Preparation is key when it comes to planting switchgrass and this episode takes you through the steps they took from abandoned grassland to planted switchgrass that will provide beneficial wildlife cover for years to come.

Any concerns that the low rate of atrazine you applied was effective at controlling weed seed or had any negative impact on your switchgrass growth?

Very good ideas. Are you doing any natural regeneration on the open areas? I'm doing a similar plan on my new property that is 75% open. I'm very happy with the regen along with switch.

Yes there will be some natural areas. We generally call them old field style habitats. Hopefully full of broadleaves and forbs!

How did it work doing only 2-3 pounds ? I thought it was supposed to be 6-8 pounds per acre ??

6-8 for a solid monoculture. We went lighter to encourage some natives and yes there will be plenty of non desirables come up, but we can control them. It looked good for it just being it's first year. We'll really get to start seeing how things are coming together this summer.
