I used to brush hog everything on one of my parcels, now when I cut, I leave a few strips just in high weeds going up the field to my different stands. It's night & day, never realized the importance of the cover walking in until the past few seasons. -Thank you Jeff!

My combination of screen and switchgrass from last year resulted in a perfect stand of switch this year. My area was an open field, but last years screen was perfect and now the switch is, so mixing them works just fine.

Hi Greg...you have to get extremely lucky...and if the switch lives it is extremely rare that the screening is worth anything by November.
As a professional whitetail consultant I could never in good conscience recommend mixing...as I have too much experience to do so. Just a word of caution for anyone considering mixing the two together.

Thanks for continuing to share your knowledge on switchgrass, you are the best source available to hunters. My switchgrass field is starting its 3rd year and as in the 2nd year I completed the Simazine application as well as the Glyphosate and 2-4D application, however there was much more dead 2nd year switchgrass covering the soil so I don't think the applications were as effective. We are experiencing more weed growth than we had in the past, particularly thistle, so now with the switch coming up we are spot spraying the thistle. Anything we should do differently with the prior year switch before the herbicide applications? Located in NE lower Michigan. Thanks!

I frost seeded and sprayed this spring but nothing is coming up yet but a few weeds.
Now I know to be patient for germination and keep mowing the weeds.
Thanks for passing on the knowledge Jeff!!

Hi Jeff, can you mix switch and clover. I had an established stand of switch that was kinda thin last spring so I seeded some clover in and mowed last summer, this spring the clover took off and the switch isn’t as thick as I thought It should be, should I mow or will that just encourage more clover growth. Once the switch gets above the clover it should be fine right? What would you do?

hundreds of other forbs and grasses you could be seeding with your big native warm season grasses. If you want to control weeds only seed said wsgs at a few pounds per acre and hit up a local conservation nursery. Invasive grasses and noxious weeds in the soil seed bank will still be a problem for a while but biodiversity and periodic disturbance, i recommend fire, is always the solution for productive grasslands. Besides biodiversity being a good in itself deer will love it and you will be full of gamebirds too.
That's just the way I would like to see it done, you don't have to listen to me I'm not trying to be rude. It takes alot more knowledge but it sure is a great way to learn and spend your time before fall.
    Don't treat it like corn.

Competition is a good thing actually, you just aren't growing enough species.

Unfortunately unless there are stands of pure switchgrass, then there is not enough cover during the Winter months for pheasants and rabbits. That's why there are pollinator strips nearby. That's one of the major flaws with CRP plantings and pheasant cover mixes.
Solid strips of switchgrass alongside solid pollinator blends or early successional growth is the only way to go, Unfortunately. I have seen so many failures and turned dozens of parcels around with this strategy.
We have over 1000 acres of "mixes" just a couple of miles down the road. 1000s of pheasants planted and no pheasants alive due to the lack of Winter cover. They have been told they are doing a good job, but in reality an epic failure. Sad, but I will do more with 8-9 acres of switchgrass edging covering over 2 miles and combined with a few acres of pollinator blends, then they will do with over 1000 acres and 10s of thousands of dollars spent as instructed by schooled "professionals". Sad but true.

I've dug up and transplanted some switch grass roots a couple times to surround a favorite ground setup spot and it grew way better than I expected...done it in June, and it still got 6-7ft by late September. It even grew back were I dug it up from the same as if I hadn't touched it.

Jeff- When planting switch grass next to pollinator blend, do you ever see the switch migrate aggressively into the pollinator areas? Or are you able to maintain a clear edge between the two in the long term (5-10 years)?

Real bummer! It can come up a lot later than some think. I know in SE MN/SW WI for me I've seen it only an inch or two high the end of June. It really depends on moisture levels. It eventually grows...if weeds are mowed later in the Summer.

    • @Doctor_Subtilis

They always recommend way more than you need, remember the primary goal of herbicide companies isn't killing weeds, it's selling more herbicide. Sounds like it is working as intended.

I've done tests on numerous species and so have restoration ecologists who are pretty much experts at this. Often times as much 30 times lower concentrations will kill the target species dead just fine.

Jeff what do you suggest for a simazine replacement? Alot of northeast states you need a herb aside licence to buy it.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  3 роки тому +1

Hi BS! I would just skip that step...it is the least important. Making sure the area has had great weed control going into the Fall is very important, and then that shot of Glyphosate after Spring Green-up will be a very good start!! And then of course mowing mid Summer...late July/early August as needed.

Sounds good. Thanks for the advice.
Through all of my research on the internet I'm having a very tough time specifically finding newly emerged pictures of young switchgrass and how to id it.
Since you are an advocate of planting switchgrass and have much more experience with it and have planted hundreds of acres. A suggestion i could make for a video in the future is to maybe do some more in depth of the growth stages with more pictures and more video clips of switchgrass stands throughout its development years at different lengths as it develops. Especially from germination and on. Since you know much more about it and what to look for Maybe incorporate how to id it vs other grasses ect... I know ive heard you touch on it in many other videos im thinking myself and many other viewers would enjoy seeing more content at the emergence and first few inches of growth. Thanks again and I look forward to watching more videos of yours.

Jeff, I was wondering why in a number of your videos about switchgrass you say no need to burn it and seem to be against it.... In this video even saying it just looks cool on social media. So I have two very good friends who are contractors who plant switchgrass or switchgrass varieties and another friend who works between two different universities and specializes in native warm season grasses.... And all three of them say burning is one of the most important tools there is with switchgrass. I've done it both ways.... Burning and mowing. I too I'm a big believer in using chemicals and always have. Just wondering where your "no burning" opinion comes from. ? Thanks
