- We bought 15x CHEAP 2.5GbE switches and found the best including ones that had 10GbE (10Gbase-T / SFP+), hidden PoE features, and even two managed switches. This was a huge effort so you can have a Buyer's Guide.

I want cheap and energy efficient 10GbE Switches! Come on, it's about time. I expected to have them a decade ago.
This is as cheap as we can find them.
Energy efficiency in 10gbe would be nice 😊
10 gig is been out for over a decade even if it is optic it should be cheaper than it currently is
Guss staying with used Enterprise is still my go to
@@ACitizen25 I wonder about that sometimes. Some of the older enterprise 10 gig gear is very power hungry. And hot enough youre wasting more energy on cooling. Not so much to justify upgrading last time I ran the numbers, but it was getting there.
@@christopherjackson2157 true depending on generation of it's switch chip it can be more in electrical
But there has been over 5-8 switch chip generation since it was released Enterprise
If you stay in the last 3 or so power per gb of port is quite cheaper then these 2.5 per port cost (ie port electric cost divided 4 for 2.5 g or 10 for 1gb port power comparison)
Sfp or baseT both have there values but sfp if no poe need but T for 10gb poe are wonders on high end wifi backbone
LOVING the new editing and thumbnail designs! Kudos to the editor!!
Thank you for taking all of the time to find and review these STH team!
Wow! Thank you!!!
Man this video is right on time. I have been looking at a smaller switch for my computer area in the basement and wanted a 10 gig uplink with 2.5 gig copper ports. Thanks!
Time to make use of my 10Gbit cable in the house. Been waiting for prices to come down and this review gave pretty good oversight about what's on the market, maybe not now in Europe but the time has come. Great Video as usual ! 👍👍
Glad we could help!
Thank you for finding me the perfect switch for my current setup, it will fit in nicely between my preexisting 10 & 2.5Gbps networks. I am of course talking about the Hasivo S1100P-8GT PoE+ and it is on its way to me already, cheers!
Thanks for the review Patrick, just picked up the Monker 8port 2.5gbe managed switch for a Proxmox cluster I am building (3 nodes, dual nic NUCs). Appreciate the very detailed review!
Sounds like a lot of fun.
Awesome video, really helpful to see all these side by side
Hi Patrick! Thanks for the continued great work in the space. Have you considered doing a video on a home router replacement setup? Something like the "Crazy Small" router unit, one of these 2.5gig switches, and an AP? The switch and internet plugged into the router, and the AP could be plugged into the switch so that all the local traffic is switched, and all the router has to do is get things to and from the internet.
Good idea.
It would be nice to have the same kind of summary for small switches with 10G capabilities: with at least 2 10G ports, ideally with dual mode 10G baseT and SFP+ ports.
Great and timely review! Really good content from you folks in the past 12 months... kudoes!
Thank you so much Ben. We are going to have mroe on the behind-the-scenes tomorrow in my quarterly letter form the editor on the STH main site.
@@ServeTheHomeVideo Say no more 😊
Your content is both impressive and appreciated!
Yea thanks! Finally a video about important hardware. I was searching for a good and not too expensive 2.5 Gb/s ethernet switch for the past months. Thanks for the video! EDIT: With enough 2.5 ports as well.. AND Silent, so no fan!
Thanks for this!!! Been wishing you would do exactly this
It took a LONG time to put this together. I think we have 1-2 more switches that we have gotten between buying/ testing these, recording, and editing the video.
I have the Qnap, and love it, SFP+ from my wall from my rack to this switch and its ROCK solid stable !! Good Video Patrick !!
Thanks for sharing this
I like the QNAP with the 2 SFP+ ports. I'm in the process of upgrading my home network to 10gb (trunks) - so this is a great feature.
That was a fun romp! Good job condensing and presenting some choices.
Glad you liked it!
Based on this video, I decided to purchase the Hasivo S1100-8GT and it has been working flawlessly for my needs. One thing that I *have* been having problems with is finding a good 2.5 Gb PCIe network card that 'just works'. I purchased several TP_-Link TX201 cards that said they 'work with Linux' but going to their website shows that they only support the Kernel "up to 5.17". It will be used in a backup NFS server running TrusNAS Scale.
I ended up getting a Zyxel XGS1210-12, 2xSFP+, 2x2.5Gbe, 8x1Gbe for $170 sometime last year. Managed with typical (sorta crappy) Zyxel management software, but it does support VLANs and such. Not sure if OpenWrt works on it yet, but I think probably? I used one of the SFP+ ports to connect the NAS using a $15 DAC, so cheap and low power (at least compared to an 10G ethernet transceiver).
We need the Ultimate CHEAP 10GbE Switch Guide! Heelllppp :)
I spoke too soon. It looks like we got some of that too! GIMME MORE! :)
A bit of that in here as well :-)
broooo I was just looking for these, perfect timing thank you!!!
me2
This one took a LONG time to do. We bought all of these switches ~8 weeks ago.
Thanks. was in the market for one of these switches to do testing at home with XGS-PON
thanks for the awesome video! ive been looking for a cheap managed 2.5 gigabit POE+ switch for AGES and i didnt even know about the hasivo lol
I had no idea either until the team found them awhile ago.
I purchased a SODOLA 5 Port 2.5G Ethernet Switch on Amazon for $87.99 this last December. I've been very happy with it.
Excellent video thanks Pat!
Glad you enjoyed it
10+ GbE or GTFO (to industry not STH; and yeah, I see the uplink ports). I just wanted to say that I appreciate you how are blindly handed a switch at the edge of the frame and you talk about it without skipping a beat! :-)
Bryan and I did a practice hand-off with the QNAP that you saw, then I was like "ok now we just do that 15 times, time to record"
The TEG-S350 has gone up in price. I bought it back in 2021 and only paid $125 for it. So far it's been a good switch, I mainly got it because my PC has a 2.5 port and my Asustor NAS has a 2.5 port so I wanted to be able to transfer stuff between them at the native speeds. I also got a USB-C 2.5Gbe adapter for my Macbook.
I got the QNAP QSW-M408-4C. It's a neat little switch with 8 1 gig switches and 4 10g combo ports (either ethernet or optics). It also has a management port. I've really enjoyed it and have used it to test model training over the network.
Great switch
@@floodo1 yeah! I just checked and I got it for 250. It's currently 450!
What cabling do you recommend to see these high speeds?
@@landwolf00 Over the last few years things have gotten nuts, I just purchased a used QSW-M2108-2C from eBay for $285 + tax and ended up being just over $300, new they want $449 for this one, very similar to the M408-4C but this one has 8x 2.5gbe and 2x Combo ports, the M408-4C they want $459, IMO I'd save the money and take native 2.5gbe and loose the extra 2x Combo that the other one gives you but to each his own.
Very interesting, thank you!
Several months ago I got the Zyxel MG-108 an 8 port all 2.5G switch on sale for $130.00 and I bought 2 of them.
I like the one with 2 10GbE ports, but I might be upgrading one of my home network runs to fibre (it's not 10Gb capable, and Cat8 isn't really available right now) so the ones with 2 SFP+ ports may be EXACTLY what I need, just need something bigger to go in my rack to serve it
I simply love everything that show up in this video, pleasant experience to watch a tech video which is very rare...😅
Thank you!
Thanks for the review. What about the Layer 3 managed Hassivo switch I commented about? What did you think of that? It looks like the one you just reviewed with the 10G SFP ports but with a serial console port. In fact you can see where the socket usually goes on the right when you showed the bare board.
Great comparison, thank you for your suggestions!
Glad you found it useful!
Just mindblowing! Thanks a lot for this top list/
Great video! Curious about the Hasivo & Moberlink and LACP.
Do they support VLAG or stacking, so two can be combined and a device plugged in to each will still have aggregation?
Great summary! Thanks!
Very welcome!
Thank you. I've been searching for a cheap 2.5/10Gb managed switch for the homelab. I wanted unifi but it wasn't in the budget as I need 2. Hasivo it is 👍
I did the same. Looking for a 10gbase-t transceiver to breakout to my tl-sx1008 switch
great video, thank you for covering this!
We are trying to push for less expensive quality options out there. Hopefully this kind of project helps
@ServeTheHome it is really nice to see stuff that is way more accessible to most. don't get me wrong, i still love seeing the shiny things too ✨️
Thank you for your service Sir. I felt alone before stumbling on this video.
Hello patrick this is such a great video as i'm currently looking to make huge upgrades to my home network across the board. Would it be possible somewhere in the near future to continue this ultimate guide series to other categories of networking products you review. Such as those PFSense boxes or firewalls/switches, etc.
We might do something like that. This is an experiment to see if people find this useful. Then we are going to tweak the format. We also need someone or folks to be able to spot new units and refresh these over time. Still learning, so I just want to see what people think about this one. If folks like it and share it, then that would be a good signal we are on to something.
Hi Patrick! How is the latency between 10Gbit ports and 2.5GBit ports on these switches? I would suppose switch has to buffer the whole packet before re-transmitting it on different medium.
Thank for making this amazing video, I cant wait to start buying some 2.5GBE switches., Is there anyway to get a matrix with all the prices, etc quick details and your affiliate links?
The main site article will have all of these plus 1-2 more listed with prices/ power and such.
Hi, the Hasivo S600WP-5GT-2S+_SE looks very interesting, but there is a comment on the product page saying it's loosing at least part of its configuration when it's rebooted. Did you encounter that issue? It's a bit of a deal breaker when looking for a managed switch
I'm looking at that also. If it can't hold an IP change, it's really not helpful, though I might just deal with it as I really need vlans, though I want 2 of these, so them having the same ip isn't going to work well 😂. I wish the guy replied with an update to his comment if they got back to him or not.
The Zyxel XGS1010-12 is also worth considering. Here in the UK it's only £10 more than the MG-105. It only has 2x 2.5GbE ports but it adds 2x 10GbE so could be very versatile in the home, for example if you have a server you want to connect at 10GbE but don't want the expense of a full 10Gb switch.
We tried to limit to 2.5GbE as a minimum port speed. There are a bunch of switches with 1-2 2.5GbE ports, but with WiFi 6E and soon WiFi 7, folks are going to need at least 2.5GbE to keep up with WiFi.
@@ServeTheHomeVideo That's true, I just think for £10 more you're getting 25Gbps of throughput on fast ports vs 12.5Gbps on the MG-105. And that's not counting the extra 8Gbps you get from the other 8 ports it has. Sacrificing 1x 2.5Gb port to gain 2x 10Gb and 8x 1Gb could be worthwhile for a lot of use cases.
here the ZyXEL XGS1250-12 Managed @ (€ 143,99) is almost the same price as the ZyXEL XGS1010-12 @ (€ € 143,84 )
The ZyXEL XGS1250-12 Managed @ (€ 214,19) is also interesting. It has 8x 1GB + 3x 2.5/5/10G + 1 SFP+
your modem/router, TV/smarttv boxes, POE switch & printer can all go on 1GB ports this leaves 3x 10G ports + 1 sfp+ port free for pc/nas/server...
Careful with Zyxel !! No real 802.3ad LACP support 😬 other than that, they're ok 👍🏻
I actually have the switch mentioned above as it’s a great 10g, 2.5g and 1g options. This videos helpful to me as next time I move I’ll need more 2.5g ports so I’ll add one of these!
Do you have any articles or videos about the benefits/downsides of managed switches vs off-loading those functions onto your firewall/router device? I often find myself struggling to imagine why I'd need a managed switch when my pfsense box seems able to do all that kinda stuff centrally anyway
Good idea. I will send this to Rohit on our team.
Amazon seem to sell the QNAP switches discounted every now and again. At least here in Europe. I bought the QNAP QSW-2104-2T (unmanaged 4x2.5Gbps RJ45 + 2x10Gbps RJ45) for around $135 at the start of 2023. That is basically the same as the tested TRENDnet TEG-S762 or the QNAP QSW-2104-2S-A (but with RJ45 instead of SFP+). Even though I don't have any 10GbE equipment at the moment it felt like a good investment for the future, and the 10Gbps ports are multiports so I can run them at 2.5Gbps as well. So right now I'm using it as a 6 port 2.5Gbps switch. :)
Have we determined which 10gbase-T transeivers would be compatible with the hasivo X600WP ?
As someone knowledgeable about network switches, could you recommend a PoE++ router and switch combination suitable for operating 4 cameras streaming 4K video over NDI? It seems challenging to find clear information on this topic online.
I bought the TP-Link TL-SG108-M2 8-Port 2.5 Gigabit in December 2021 for $182 and thought this was a great price. Normal price $200 at the time , now the price is $169 @ B&H
Everyday price. I do see it higher other places. Prices have come down some on 2.5Gbe but with all of the make and models you have shown maybe we will see prices come down with the competition.
It's odd they left out the 8 port (and 5 port version TP-Link TL-SG105) and instead went for the ultra low build quality aliexpress junk model which isn't even certified as safe to use by western authorities. The TL-SG105 has been great on my network, no issues at all.
I have 5Gb from ATT, can you do a video on that? Id love some insight. I struggled to get the right equipment to utilize it. settled on some small mikrotik sfp+ switch, a specific mikrotik rj45 transceiver, and otherwise went 10Gb locally
I am jealous! 5Gbps is hard these days. Sounds like a decent setup. What are you using for the router/ firewall?
Hi, nice video, thanks. This hasivo unit, I can see some complains in Aliexpress saying that you can't change the management IP? Can you confirm that?
Would be interested in seeing a video about the qnap QSW-M2106PR-2S2T which has 6x 2.5gbe/2x 10gbe with poe++ and 2 sfp+ ports. Looks like provantage carries it for around $600, making it what seems to be the cheapest 2.5g poe++ switch with a 10g port. Still out of my price range so hoping to see more competitors with this feature set.
Will add that to the list.
Thank you!!
Me I would like a 16 port switch of which a couple are 10Gbps at least eight are 2.5Gbps and there is some PoE, a bit of smart management (VLAN's plus turn the power on/off on the PoE ports) and is fanless for the home.
Was the consumption measured AC from the wall or DC in the machine, could the differences come from wall wart ineffiency?
I'm wondering if there is a way to make text in the description selectable on mobile? Or a way to make your affiliate links country agnostic? Your affiliate links currently force me to the yankville version of amazon, which on mobile forces the app to try to change it's default behaviour.
Saw today the Vimin VM-250402 for 70$ with 4x2.5Gb and 2 SFP+ 10g, 60 Gbps switching capacity declared. Maybe it deserves a place in this "Switch Guide"
Does any one of them allow link aggregation?
And if allowed, how many ports can be used for link agregation?
Is there a place to download new firmware and manual for Hasivo S1100P-8GT PoE+? I cannot find it searching Google.
2024 edition when? :D saw your ienRon review, is it worth getting or should I wait for the updated list?
Targeting March. We keep getting new units. We should also have a little video on two 6-port models next week as well.
If I could get one of those Hasivo switches with rack ears, that would be perfect!!!
I have one of the TrendNet 5-port ones, and it seems like it just outright drops VLAN-tagged packets. I don't expect to be able to assign VLANs, but at least pass the packets through unaltered, come on!
Patrick, I am super jealous of all the toys you get to play with!
Right now it feels like a burden. So much to review. So little time. That is why we are expanding the team.
Are these like 1gig switches where there is a difference between the backplane speeds? I mean are these all 2.5gbe per port, or 2.5gbe combined over all the ports?
Thanks so much for putting this video out. Have been trying to figure out how to upgrade to 2.5 and all the options out there. I really really wish there was as 12 port POE 2.5G for 200ish. I have an 8 port poe 1g switch now and want the upgrade plus extra ports but have no use for a really big switch and can't afford one. Is it not possible to make a fanless 12 port model like these? Is that why we don't see them much?
PoE adds quite a bit to the cost.
@@ServeTheHomeVideo So its either 8 ports or 24?
Broad question: Say I'm upgrading google fiber to 8GB and I want to get the most out of that on two workstations. If I were to buy a switch that had two 10G ports and four 2.5G ports, the cable from my google router would have to use one of those 10G ports as input right? Therefor I'd only have one more 10G for a single workstation? Would running my google router cable into the 2.5G ports bottle neck the rest of the hardwires that are connected to the 10G as outputs?
Patrick, any chance you guys have any of the new Alder Lake fanless firewall boxes from TopTon/KingNovy on order? Looks like a newer chassis with more m.2 slots plus the 1215u/1235u/1265u along with the 6x i226-V could be a good pairing
We have one. It was having issues with Proxmox VE 7.3. We need to retry with 7.4 but ran out of time last week
@@ServeTheHomeVideo Thanks for the response! I definitely hope 7.4 sorts things out. By any chance have you guys looked at whether the DDR4 ran at XMP profile speed? Pairing 12th gen with something like 3200MHz CL-16 sounds groovy, but if it's only going to run at CL-22 there's not much point in opting for the faster memory kits
I just ordered my mokerlink 9 port switch , will let you know how it goes:)
I've got a question about the TRENDnet TEG-S762, and also broadly about 10G ports. So I'm looking at upgrading Google Fiber to either 5GB or 8GB but for that particular switch he mentioned that it does not support 5GbaseT so does that mean if I were to have Google Fiber at 5GB and even if it were input and output through both of the 10G ports, it would be bottlenecked to 2.5G? and if 5GB internet is bottlenecked what about 8GB? Do 10G ports generally support slower networks than the port like 5GB or if the internet isn't 10G would it go down to 2.5G or the net best supported rate?
What cabling do you recommend to see these high speeds?
Your thumbnail photos always look like you're laughing with disdain at me 😂
Ha! We have someone new making thumbnails too starting earlier this month.
My only takeaway from this is 2.5gbps switches are still a bloody ripoff. I can't justify their cost unless they come down to somewhere in the ballpark of $40.
Very fair assessment. That is part of why we are doing this series. Prices need to come down.
@@ServeTheHomeVideo Price should be around $50 for a 5 Port , I think still enough profit TPlink 5 Port around $14.95 Microcenter
Can you do a round up of slightly more higher end units? Im looking for a 24 port 2.5g switch with poe, possibly some 1 g / 2.5 g / 10 g back hall links
Yes
Netgear XS508M 8 Port Switch ,, bought this for $445 B&H now $481 it has 1,2.5,5,10Gbe , this was great for home lab combo 8 Port has Ethernet, or Use Fiber connection.
I bought this for small business , put in 10Gbe for Workstations or 2.5Gbe for some Laptops, Unmanged only downside. Patrick can you review and tell us if you like it.
Abandoned at the Rewind, and it looked like an interesting video.
do i have to use the 10gb sfp+ as uplinks or can i also use one of them to pass the 10gbit through to my main pc?
You can totally use them as PC links
How do you test throughput? I'd like to test out my Vimin VM-250402
Just have had a look through your video list and I can't find any video where you showcase 2.5GbE ethernet cards.
Can you compare QNAP qsw-2104-2s and Mikrotik CRS310-8G+2S+IN ? Thank you so much.
What about the Trendnet TEG-3102WS? (8) 2.5Gbe and (2) 10Gbe SFP+ with web management.
I have a few of those dumb 5-port 2.5g QNAP switches and there's a common problem with them where they just stop passing traffic until manually rebooted. No idea why. Mine were from when they first released, so maybe there's been a firmware fix on them since.
Do any of these support 801.1Q Priority Flow Control?
The use of mGig is still iffy for now for things shipping with them, as others are saying, I'm really more interested in 10/25gbe tech at home for a desk or tucked in my media shelves. I still use a little juniper ex2200-12 on my desk for my laptop and desktop that is really more of a vm server now, and a dell n1108 for my media, rest is now all 10g to my servers/storage. I can't really find anything like even the 8 port 10g mikrotik only with copper, but leaning that way with some copper base-t sfp+'s. I am watching ebay for a netgear m4300 for the 8-16 port models patiently to be resold at a reasonable price!
how about a cheap 2.5Gb 8x port managed switch?
I would really like to add vlans to my network and this area is not covered anywhere
Please review the zyxel 1250-12. Its pretty amazong and works good on my home lab enviroment. Somewhat expensive. But not that much
Sorry, im a network nube, but are no name managed switches safe? We hear a lot of concerns of routers coming non-friendly countries. Are managed switched another attack vector.
Can any of these be powered by POE inn?
Did you test any performance and standards compliance? Or just power and specs?
We have iperf3 results in here for every switch and noted the ones that are not sold in the US/ EU primarily due to lacking compliance certifications. Also, we had to test every port with the Fluke tester for PoE type and that is how we found the strange configuration of the Hasivo.
Now I want to know any cheap option for 2.5Gbe+ switch which provided 3.0+ gen USB
What's the point of an unmanaged 2.5gbps Poe++ switch? I'd think most people running a separate wifi6e AP are likely in need of vlans on it too. 4k IP cameras?
Anybody figure out which Optical transceivers coding works for the Hasivo switched?
Any chance you’re going to review the TP Link TL-ST5008F 8 port 10G managed SFP+ from Ali? Costs around 200€. GUI is in Chinese but read somewhere you can change it in English in the browser settings. CLI is English.
Working on a bunch of these 2.5GbE switches for the main site and a 64x 400GbE switch in April (likely a video for that one.) We did an unmanaged version of that TP-Link I believe ua-cam.com/video/aYkicPEDoLE/v-deo.html
Duuude. Thank you!
You bet!
Which brand SFP to use in these cheaper switches.
Right now in Amazon Spain, there is a Tenda TEM2010F for only 93€
-All ports are 2.5GbE, 8 Ethernet and 2 SFP
-support for VLAN and static agregation to get up to two 5Gbps conections
-50gpbs capacitiy and without fans
We have been doing updates to the main site guide. Just wrapping filming another roundup with ~9 new sub $100 fanless options
@ServeTheHome,
You didn't mention the TP-Link TL-SE1005M from Aliexpres in your video. But when looking at the specs on you site it looks like an unbeatable bargain: Extremely low power consumption at only halve the price!
Are there any major disadvantages to this switch?
We did a September update, and in that cost bracket there are now options with 10GbE ua-cam.com/video/IdLWAwxU0ds/v-deo.html
Nice display of hardware in the background, i can easily recognize an insane Microtik 100G switch :)
Heh. That is actually one of the least exotic/ expensive pieces in the background.
@@ServeTheHomeVideo Hahahaha i see lol Have a great weekend ahead 🙏🏽💪🏽
Why didn't you review the QNAP QSW-2104-2? It's got RJ45 10Gbe rather than SFP.
Can you trust the Hasivo to not have any spyware?
Can you do a round up of PoE switches with internal power supplies (no power brick). I’m looking for something with 16 ports with PoE+ or PoE++.
That is a good idea. I want to see how this one does. The challenge with the larger PoE+/PoE++ switches is that it is harder to find 2.5GbE options, and when you do, they tend to cost a lot more
@@ServeTheHomeVideo I was thinking just 1GB is fine, because you are right, if you go to anything above 1GB with PoE++ then yeah, costs are prohibitive.
