Final Cut Pro Not Importing Audio With Video? Here's A Fix!

- Are you importing video clips into Final Cut Pro and finding that there's no audio?
Here's a fix that may work for you - Renaming .MP4 files to .mov
I think this problem might be with DJI app that works with their OSMO Mobile 3, or FilmicPro, but I'm not certain at this point.

Mike, you can change the extension of all the files at once in the Finder. Select all of the files you want to change, then Right-Click>Rename X items>Replace Text>Find: .mp4>Replace with: .mov>Rename. You'll get a warning about changing file extensions, but check "Apply to All" and click "Use .mov"
Also, I find that just changing the file extension to .mov doesn't always work. In those cases I select the files, the Right-Click>Encode Selected Files>Setting: Apple ProRes>Continue. This process takes a little longer, but it has never failed me with FCPX or iMovie. I found the most problematic files are webcam and screen recording sent to me by co-workers.
Excellent comment. Another trick I saw from another UA-camr was to use the same re-encode dialog you mentioned but re-encode as audio only. Then you can just drag the audio file into FCPX and connect it to the video on the timeline.
Good point about screen recordings! That's exactly the situation where I encountered this issue, too. Amazing how much better UA-cam ends up being than the Apple forums for finding a solution-people there were giving answers that had nothing to do with posters' legitimate questions, criticizing OPs audio setup instead of giving answers, or just flat out saying they didn't know.

Excellent - thanks for the help. It also works if you have someone sending you a video from a Microsoft Teams meeting and the audio drops out part way or does not show up at all.

I cannot believe how simple this solution is lol I've seen suggestions of encoding/extracting audio and then syncing in the timeline or 3rd party conversion software... but with 143 mp4 clips neither of those were viable options lmao I took the time to change to MOV and now I have audio. thank you for uploading this, saved my project
I know right! When I was looking for a solution I came across some of those options and was like… “Woah 😳, this way over my head “. I’m so glad this worked for you and saved your project! I was so scared when I thought I might have to reshoot all my footage
Also renaming 143 clips must’ve been pretty monotonous!

I import a an audio clip make in Quicktime.
It plays fine in Quicktime.
The waveform shows in FCPX but it will not play!!
If I apply any effect to it, eg set the mode to dialogue, it zero's the waveform!!
This only applies if the audio is recorded in Quicktime.
They .mov does not work on it.
Any ideas?

For me it's usually Windows webcam videos.
That will do it too!
Another thing that I tried that works: Import the video and if the audio doesn't work, click on the clip and push shift+3. This will import the audio only, then you can adjust it so that it fits the video. Basically like manually detaching the audio

I had the same problem when trying to edit an mp4 file produced and downloaded from Microsoft Streams. It had audio in QuickTime, but a flat line in Final Cut Pro. Your renaming tip worked!

Yup that's the way to do it. Thanks for the fix! I thought it was my headphones at first because FCP also sometimes won't work with bluetooth headphones (yes, I know there's a delay, it doesn't matter if you go frame by frame before cutting), but the .MOV change immediately fixed my audio issues.

Use "Automator" to change in bulk the file extension. That app comes with all Macs for free.

I have a question. I did as you said, but file 'mov' still doesn't have audio data also. And after 1st opening that file stop importing in FCpro at all.

Thanks for your video, you explain things very well. I have a couple questions. I recently opened a library that contains edits, sound etc on a new Mac, M1. The media clips, when clicked on, I see the "modify" option. Why is that and should I just go ahead and modify? Also, "voice isolation" box will not check so I am unable to use it. Any idea why? Finally, the project which opens in the timeline contains two clips with that dreaded red box warning. The sound is there but not the video. I tried relinking but FC is not able to find whatever is missing. I may try opening FC on the old computer and assuming I still have it there, will try to copy and move to the new Mac. I apologise for so many questions but this move to a much needed Mac has not gone quite as smoothly as hoped. Thanks for any help.

3:25 Just mark all files you wanna change the name of and click rename. After this a little window will appear you can search for the part which you wanna cut out at the left (".mp4") and the at the right you write the exchange for it (".mov"). It will change all file endings now.

or just select all the files you wanna rename and bench rename it or replace mp4 to mov... unfortunately for me the this didn't work

@@mikekrzesowiak7944 no worriers, solved it :) i did the things mentioned here a few times over again, and restarted my computer. couldn't tell you which one was the true solution. i guess resetting the ram after restarting could've helped? either way, it took a few hours of my day but turned out fine in the end. thanks for the video!

I've had the same issue. In that scenario what has been working for me is exporting the original file as 4K and saving it under a different name.
