So I tried playing DRAGON BALL Z: KAKAROT In 2023...

- Following the next-gen update and new Bardock expansion, I felt it was time to return to one of the most authentic Dragon Ball games made. For its lack of depth, Kakarot made up for it in presentation and fan service. Can lightning strike twice three years later? I dig in and find out.

First of all, Dragon Ball and Z had incredible animation for it’s time. DB is an 80s anime. One Piece didn’t come until MUCH later, and it still didn’t have that great of animation. Bleach has the best animation out of the “big three” Shonen anime from the 2000’s. I don’t wanna be that guy but you’re way off the mark in terms of animation so we gotta put some repec on the name and the artists.. DBZ had episodes being churned out every week consistently for years, in the 80s, classic hand-drawn cell animation, it’s among the best for it’s time and still holds up today.
my g knows
Season 1 of DBZ came out in 89 and ended in 90. so while DB was an 80's anime almost all of DBZ was a 90's anime. I still agree that it was great for the time since one piece aired in 99 and bleach in 2006. but don't mistake DB "Z" for being a decade older than it is. but even then I'd say neon genesis evangelion was better in most cases than a lot of DB or DBZ. i love dbz bro but man it is flawed beyond anything.
This man said piccolo vs 17 had the best animation like Goku Vs cell doesn't exist or Gohan going SSJ2 for the first time.
Tune in next week for Second of all!
@@itsjustpj7270 Was going to say just this. DBZ was '89 - '96 in Japan (only 31 episodes aired in the 80s technically out of 291 episodes).
When DBZ was good (storyboard/character designs/animation), it was really good - I still love it. But won't lie that there were some reaaally derpy frames occasionally (Cell saga?)
I just redownloaded this game after hearing about the passing of toriyama and plan to finish this game with the dlc. rest in peace to one of the most amazing storytellers ever.
I feel like you need to go back and watch dbz again. The Saiyan saga may have looked meh but afterwards the animation was amazing. I have no idea where you got the idea that “you have to use your imagination for a lot of the fights.” That is just false. Especially in the buu saga with yuya takahashi’s animation. Chef’s kiss. Much better than even dbs broly imo
That last sentence is crazy to me. Buu Saga DBZ was a beauty for it's time but DBS Broly to me is far and above the best DB has ever looked. But to each their own ofc
This is slowly becoming one of my favorite channels. Love the content
In my opinion the best DBZ game is Tenkaichi 3 PS2 but Kakarot is the 2nd best. It’s so much fun to explore all of the original locations of the Dragon Ball world. Plus the Bardock & Trunks DLC is 100% amazing. Also the best thing in the game is the cooking. I never get tired of seeing Goku and other characters just destroy the dinner table lol 😂
Just finished the Bardock dlc. Def the best one besides the Trunks dlc. Cant wait for the og dragonball dlc. 🔥
Glad to see a fellow BT3 fan
My favorite game is Dragon Ball fighterZ. Though I have been wanting to play The Tenkaichi games for a while. I am thinking of buying this game after I get the Budokai collection.
@@VongolaXZax are you kidding me? I was the king of that game. Seriously man I went crazy with Goku(mid), Bardock and future Gohan. I played it so many times with my cousins and my friends from high school.
@@Steel-101 yeah lol, Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Budokai 3 was my go-to games as a kid with my older brother, mini games were fun as heck in DBZBT2.
just recently came across your videos and i gotta say im super happy i did, and i love the content!!!
Always love to see Dragon Ball content on Retro Rebound!
For my entire life I have not been an anime fan (not saying that I am now) buuuut after playing this game and FighterZ, I started getting into the DB franchise and I love it. Also played Xenoverse 2 and got the dlcs. I’m addicted. It’s weird how a game like this is made for the fans but it’s what made me a fan
Naruto Shippuden is really good too
@@theredqueen2283 not something I can get into. Especially with all the filler it has
Grew up on DBz. Its the only anime i enjoy still.
@@Eldergodconsultant i recommend normal Naruto then if it's not too late. less than 1/2 the episodes(220ish), like a 75-25 filler rate, and the fillers are even as good as the canon story, and if you enjoy that, then I'd very much recommend the games, a ps2 emulator if possible for the OG ultimate ninja ones, or pickin up the Ultimate Ninja Storm series if it's on sale, same thing with DBZ, if you like the show you'll like the game & vice versa, hope this ain't an annoyance mate!
@@wolvez2724 I have the ultimate storm ninja games and Shinobi strikers. I haven’t started the storm games but I’ve played Shinobi strikers and I enjoyed the combat. However I don’t think it’s gonna pull me in for the story.
Loved kakarot. Truly one the best dbz games out there. The impact of your blows, the power ups and the method of training is phenomenal
Is this game worth downloading im doubting to download
In my opinion, I think it’s worth it if you’re a huge dragon ball fan, or just want to get into the anime. I definitely think the combat is solid, cutscenes are top tier (that aren’t the text boxed ones), and the side quests are a bit interesting if you have prior knowledge on dragon ball. The base game does get rid of some key points, but adds some as well. Like In the video, you can explore around multiple places in the game, even going off world like the Kai’s planet or namek. You can do baseball if you’re bored, or make a car if you want (they got the driving episode as a main mission.). But, I will say depending on your budget. I might buy one of the upgraded versions that include the DLCs. I forgot what they’re called, but the highest edition for it is like $40 more expensive, but comes with both season passes. Which are 6 dlc’s in total which will give you about an extra 12 hours of play time for story alone. It just depends if you wanna buy it. Since if you wanna experience dragon ball, explore the world, and play as goku and co. I’d buy it. If you want to experience the dragon ball world as your own character buy xv2. I will say though, the base game only covers up to RoF. But has a decent spin on it, and the base game is only $20. But you might wanna buy a couple of the dlc’s if you want cool moves and all that aren’t in the base game. Or more stories, like Universe 6 vs 7 tournamnet, black saga, a bit of ToP, a bit of broly, and some super hero stuff.
Rip Akira
I love that they keep giving this game support.
Dragon Ball is an 80's anime and ended 3 years before the One Piece anime started... so I'd say it's pretty good for its time lol.
this review is so on point, you explain the faults of this game rly well, but you also praise the great aspects - really hope DBZ game makers find your review here to learn from this, great stuff
I wish they had done an actual open world where you could fly to each area.
That would've been the most significant improvement I would've made.
Dbz Kakarot is the best modern dbz game imo. Ive been playing alot of Xenoverse2 recently but I always find my way back to kakarot.
That’s what I’m saying broo this game is 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
Thanks man, I was staying away from this one, but this video convinced me to give it a chance!
You can definitely do more with the combat when you’re pressing circle or B you can also press X square or triangle after and you can get a different combo animation. It’s not much but it does help give the small depth of a combo system you should try it.
there is the mod like a dragon makes the combat system muuuch better
10:18 DBZ ended in 1996, and One Piece started in 1999 it makes absolutely no sense to compare the animation of the two. Other than that great video!
I love this game I just wish there were better sidequests and that the combat system was deeper. Its basically just a slightly diff version of Xenoverse's combat system which i didnt really care for either. Almost the perfect dbz game imo.
Yea if the combat wasnt gonna be deep they shouldve went all out with the RPG elements.
@@Ty-cx5zj Exactly my thoughts!
How is it even close to almost perfect when it doesn't even accurately follow the story?
@@realmajorx3698 very curious to know what you think isnt accurate about the story
I mean no flash cannon.. they skipped a lot of fights leading up to frieza saga and the cell saga .. some fights didn’t happen like they should’ve.. no hate my guy just my thoughts so far during my play time 💯 loving it tho still pretty fun game overall
I just want to say you, Resonant Arc and Happy Console Gamer are my 3 favorites to watch these days. Each of you brings a different format and feel of what I love in videogames.
I would to see as the next DLC young Goku against Red Ribbon army and when he enters the World Tournament
Bet no-one knew this.
Open Kakarot on PS4 or PS4 Pro.
On the main menu, Open Dragon Card Warriors.
Exit Card Warriors to the main Kakarot Menu.
Start or load a game, You now have enabled TAA Anti Aliasing on the Main game.
No more flickering on buildings/fishing docks and assets, character models.
Kakarot actually got me back into dbz heavy
Imagine an OG Dragon Ball game. Since the series was more grounded back then you could make it kinda like an Arkham style game with the combat, exploration, and different missions
Rumor has it the next dlc will be the db tournament fighting Piccolo Jr before dbz
@@aaronwalakay That would be sick
Its my favorite Dragon Ball game. I loved every moment i played it non stop for my first time in 2022.
I got it recently due to the gamestop sale and have been enjoying it so much didn't know it came out that long ago and wondering if there will be a review for Breakers in 3 years
You said in 3 years wth
Have you played Dot Hack Gu on ps2 or the past recode ver on ps4, pc, switch or Xbox. Cause you mention cyberconnect2 doesn't do well in character depth cause I clearly remember how deep they went with characters in GU
You have to remember DBZ first aired in Japan in like 1988-1989 and OG DB is like 4-5 years older than that come 2030 those shows will be nearly half a century old
Didn't know you had another channel other than your main one. I'm here to support here too if I can't via patron or donations.
Keep up the good work but most of all look after your physical and mental health - take care
It's a cool game. There's not a lot of interesting material in the open world, but flying around is cool. They have orbs everywhere and collecting them is addicting.
I played it during the first lockdown, only missed out like 1 or 2 trophies which looking back now annoys me. For me it fell down with the post launch content, I never got round to playing the trunks stuff because the ‘new power’ missions were too much about the grind, reaching ridiculous levels to become SSJ blue for no real reason other than to see it
openly laughed at the kicking the fish in the head bit. hilarious. Thank you!
Dbz kakarot is literally such an amazing game, the combat is a little bland, but that's OK. I hope they keep these graphics for future games.
Did they give back our save files yet for xbox series s/x?? Made me mad i went to log in and cant even ise the same account
For me, Budokai 3/Infinite World and Dragon Ball FighterZ are the best DBZ games of them all, but purely from a gameplay standpoint. I enjoy the Tenkaichi/Raging Blast style, but the faster paced and actual feel of a DB fight is best captured in a 1V1 fighter IMO.
That being said, Kakarot delivers on the story perspective… except with Return of Frieza and Battle Of The Gods. They dropped the ball with those DLC’s. However Trunks and Bardock make up for it in a BIG way. It’s clearly a love letter to fans, and it basically feels like a 3D Legacy Of Goku. As a fan, I can’t help but be grateful.
The art style of DBZ in this game is what we need all future games!
Budokai 1 was my first exposure to dragonball or dbz. Budokai 3 is one of the best games for sure. So much nostalgia with these games
I love this channel
I wish more spots for multiple ultimate attacks super attacks options too would have been nice just like dragon ball z budokai 2
Dragonball z super warriors was a lit turn based pokemon style game. Good memories of that as a kid !
def the best and high in content dbz if u want to recap all the past events without rewatching. Its almost perfectly faithful to source material
The combat is shallow, yes, but they each have significantly different properties, so it's almost like an easy to pick up fighting game, and in the hands of a master, looks beautiful.
I wish they had legacy of goku equippables so it "feels" more rpgish, saiyan armor for defense, 20,000 tonne boots for training, more exp but moving slower as a penalty, etc.
More vicious animals. There's a T-rex but you can't "kill" it.
You do kill the T-Rex’s though. You get meat from it. Sure, in the actual show, Gohan eats a bit one’s tail but it survives, but in the game, they collapse afterwards, so who’s to say they don’t die?
@@sphjinx1448 i stood in front of them, they wriggle. its like we chunk out the tail and preserve the rest lol
Love this game. Put a lot of time into it. Great video.
Gonna play Super DragonBall Heroes anytime soon?
This game was pretty fun I’ve played it and it’s dlc besides the bardock dlc and I enjoyed my time it was pretty simple but sometimes that’s nice
This was the last game I bought on Xbox before converting to the Ps5. Grabbed this game in December of last yr and I'm definitely enjoying the Upgrade. 🤙🏽🤙🏽
dang, should have waited for the final release of the 2nd season pass, would be nice to see a video about the full experience
this is my number 1 db game, its just too good, and I don't remember a game having this amount of thought and love, I would glady pay any amount of money to keep playing the newer arcs of the anime in this game if it were as fledged as the original story or the future trunks dlc, imagine baby vegeta, ssj4 goku, the fight against omega shenron .... its just too good man
I dropped it after losing to DR Gero after 500,000 Gagillion billion trillion quintillion grazillion times.
This game made me break my pc….. punched a hole in my monitor, picked up my pc and threw it at my wall, then stomped on it repeatedly, the I broke the table that my monitor sat on. A table made of wood ( good quality, not that cheap plywood shit) so … don’t know how I managed that. Then I also broke an arm off my gaming chair.
I’m glad you enjoyed it though.
The only good take away I have from this game is that while playing it and dying repeatedly, I probably came as close as I ever will in real life at going super saiyan.
The cons for me. Broken pc, broken table, broken chair, a lot of holes in walls.
Pretty comedic looking back at it though, after I went on my rampage I just said fuck it slept the rest of the day. Didn’t even bother picking up all the broken shit after my carnage that night.
(Maybe this is what being broly would feel like.)
😂😂😂😂 (EDIT) KAAAAAAKARRRROOOOOOTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I swear bro no other game has been this fun especially on the ps5 hands down the best dragon ball game since OG budokai
@@ringadingbaby4332just keep making food and permanent stat boosts with legendary meals you will be unstoppable.
Plays well and is a clean game to look at but I can’t believe it didn’t have the Final Flash cutscene.
Literallt just finished replaying this for a second time today lol😂
Could you do a series on the xenosaga trilogy for the ps2 because the second one was one of my favorite turn based games from the ps2 era.
I didn’t even know that they had updated it for next gen. I have a disc copy on ps4 how do I upgrade it for my ps5? Is it just on the PlayStation store?
I believe the upgrade is only free for those who've owned the digital editions of Kakarot prior to the optimized versions release. You'll either have to buy the PS5 disc and digital version.
It was a great game that really made you feel like you were Goku playing through the timeline. DLC was pretty good, too.
I started replaying it cus of the next gen update have the game on ps4 and so i upgraded it to the ps5 version it a fun game
Would love to see a review of your retro cards
I remember playing Kakarot back when it first came out, and I was a bit disappointed. Pretty much all the things you mentioned here were my problems with the game, it just wasn’t the Dragon Ball action rpg I wanted, maybe I was expecting too much from it ? And I got bored with it after about 30 hours. I might pick it back up and give it another try though.
Game feels great like flying around and combat feels so fluid and best dbz game I’ve played yet
So long too killed Frieza at 8 hours
Do you need the dvd for the game?
The meals don't just give you buffs. They give permanent stat upgrades too. I ate so much food my power level was out of this world. It just keeps going to where you have so much health, nothing can hurt you lol it's broken af
Good video!
I'm sorry but isn't this game very recent? A bit confused because I took some of your statements to imply that this game is much older (like you mentioning how they would have done better with new technology, which is always true but I think such statements usually indicate a greater gap in technology than is the case here).
Cheers!
I think he was talking about the anime (the anime would do better If he was made today)
Legendary Super Warriors is turn based also. It's one of the best dbz games but the music suffers since it's on gbc. You should check it out it's a massive and very underrated game.
That was one hell of a game ngl. Haven't played it in forever.
You make it sound ancient with the title of this video
Overall, I was very pleased with how kakarot turned out. I was somewhat skeptical but also cautiously excited before it released because when you think DragonBall you typically don't think openzone (nice Matty 😆) it has plenty of fighting games but few rpgs and a few of those are infamous (looking at you sagas) my only real experience with "open world" dbz was on buu's fury and legacy2 (I mercifully missed out on the first) and I guess budokai3 and infinite world? It's been ages, so feel free to correct me, but I swear those games had a pseudo open world. So they aren't that common when compared to the full on fighting games.
The series X upgrade is not out yet which is really annoying! Been wanting to play the dlc and have to wait for 60 frames
And dbz animation is still amazing to this day. Especially with the funimation soundtrack. Nothing beats that dub. I bought the blu Ray steelbooks that are in 4:3 and it's amazing.
This is timely because I missed it when it came out, and I’m in the middle of the saiyan saga on the ps5 version lol
Man I hope and wish raging blast 2 comes to modern system playing that on series x or switch would be so 🔥
I decided to delve back into this on, now on my PS5 instead of my Xbox One. Decided to get all the DLC, I’m enjoying it all over again. Definitely not my favorite and it feels super slow paced in a lot of areas when I feel as though there are ways around it.
Maybe I'm just getting old...
But I just tried this out. After the first hour... it's like I should've taken notes in a notebook, entire dissertations on how each of the 283837392 systems in the game works. Like, I need to restart it again to even know what it is I'm doing. Why does it have to be so damn busy?
Kakarot in terms of character and art style to me mimics the anime the best it’s probably the most visually pleasing dbz game next to FIGHTERZ out and my favorite way to experience the story out of any dbz game no other game looks this good
I've had this game since release and never played it😅 besides the card game portion lol I liked that
This vid has now made me download the ps5 version lol
I hope that the next DBZ game is a totally original story. Like an else world movie. Xenoverse was cool but you were still playing the main story with a twist, like you said. I just want them to go the Arkham Route. Brand new story, some of the same characters that we love, and new villains and allies.
Like Dragonball Fusions? (My favorite db game)
You stuck on Arkham and Kevin Conroys dead ass. Lol He's no longer in the video game anymore. He was Batman. Now he's just a memory in a game. 😂😮😂😂😂😂😅
I don't get why people keep asking Bandai to deviate from canon for the games... it's literally been proven every time that when they do that the games turn out trash or at the very least a meh game. What we all really want is to experience a DB game as close to the actual story as possible where in cutscenes from the anime you actually play through them, that's the dream.
@@UWG3 i wanna add something to that Grant,...why can't we change Goku's clothing anytime we want, and also, why can't we see the face of our Characters. I said this on a Twitch video about Batman Arkham Knight i said he's not in the batmobile, the fat chubby white guy and alll of them said yeah, i said what about when u can only see the back of the batmobile is he still in there, some said yes, others didn't respond, thought i was crazy. I want my f**king games to be realistic, i started writing letters to Rocksteady, thought about working there, i wanted them to create a Bruce Wayne by Day, and a Batman by Night, no loading bullcrap, no need to slow down cutscenes withshort loads..when i beat that stupid game, i saw the number of men and women who worked on Batman...i was like, pissed off bro,100 fricking people couldn't put time for Bruce to have a batcave, different suits, and can walk outside as Bruce Wayne or Batman wtf?? They stole our money. I know this will sound crazy, id kill them, man or woman, take all the money and hav the people take whatever they want, including me. F**k Bandai, and Arkham Knight. I have a slow download speed on my Shit Box,...i can't play Dragonball Z??? Wtf is going on??? Darn it. 😒🤷🤦
Hasn't it been proven that whenever DB games dont follow the main story, they sell less copies? Just look at Super Dragon Ball Heroes and Dragon Ball Breakers
Regarding the combat gameplay, it's an action RPG, so a combo-system like in a HacknSlash or a fighting game really wouldn't make sense, that's not what you expect when you buy a game labeled as action rpg, and a whole lot of people really hate frenetic combos, which is why warriors games fe are not really that popular, so I think CC2 made the right decision.
Kakarot was the first game I got for the Xbox Series X. I played it to the end and the dlcs. The world feels so hollow, I hate it. There is little late game content. Only those unvoiced quests(I don't consider grunts voicing) and combat challenges.
Yeah I was pleasantly surprised with this game. I'm a bit picky with DBZ games. I LOVE Tenkaichi (BT3 is my all time favorite fighting game), but wasn't the biggest fan of Budokai (though I played the Budokai HD Collection early last year and enjoyed it well enough, just not on the level of BT3). I enjoy Xenoverse, but I'm not really into the more eSports friendly FighterZ. So this going the RPG route could have gone both ways and I thought they did a great job...not perfect, but it worked. But I played and finished it long before the DLC came out...by the time it did I hadn't touched the game in so long that I just decided not to get the Season Pass. But I was also expecting them to move on to Kakarot 2, but instead they seem to be going the Xenoverse 2 route of just feeding it DLC rather than giving us the sequel we want.
After I beat it I couldn't bring myself to play it anymore now about a year n some change later I'm going to start the Trunks dlc after I get all of the post game stuff done
Anyone know where i could get a digital code or disc for cheap 😢🙃i wanna play sooo badd
For xbox one ☝️
Dragon Ball Z launched on North American TV in 1996, quickly growing a dedicated fan base. However, its run of new episodes ended in 2003 -- before any of the Big Three hit screens. The first Big Three anime to launch in North America was One Piece in 2004, with Naruto following in 2005 and Bleach in 2006.Apr
Not that long bruv
Kakarot was ok i wish when being able to replay the arks they didn't make that replayability fights way too easy for us
The game is now $15 on sale on Steam for any PC users
Im a heavy “Kakorot” player i stoped playing xenoverse 2 sense it came out and ill say i agree with most of what you said accept the whole gohan playing most as….between, the players u play as mainly not counting obvious goten, kid trunks, or fusions…..you play with goku, vegeta, and almost future trunks far more than gohan the only person u play with less than gohan is piccolo almost….yea in his point of the story he gets the mid half of the game…but you do play with Goku mostly….and i feel thats more cause he’s missing from the story so much you have to play with him whenever you get the chance to lvl him up😂
One Piece launched in 1997 and Naruto in 1999, but Bleach didn't start until 2001. However, there was often a delay between a series' launch and its arrival in the American version of Shonen Jump. In North America, One Piece launched in 2002, Naruto began in 2003 and Bleach in 2007, meaning all of those titles were in the public consciousness at the same time.Dragon Ball, however, debuted and grew popular much earlier. The original manga launched in Japan in 1984 and finished in 1995, years before the other titles came along.
Love this game!!!
I just beat Frieza, and I'm on hard mode. Surprisingly the game has been too easy, sadly too much for my liking. Does it get harder? The only real fight I had was with Raditz, until I gained a level and bought a lot of healing items. It's odd how he was stronger than the entirety of the Frieza saga/Namek section.
Love this game bro. Trunks dlc is not hard if you do your community board right
literally was going to pick this game up just to feel dbz
After you catch up you have to do a video on one piece pirate warriors 4
I basically want kakarot but where it starts from the OG dragonball with goku and grandpa Gohan and it goes all the way through to the end of super and the manga including all of the movies, GT, and even filler BS. Full open world, not individual areas
Damn g you asking for a lot but I agree 💯, that would be awesome 😎

"I knocked out a fish. Whatcha gon do about it?" xD
Gohan was supposed to be the main character for Z the direction of the anime and manga it shows heavy, this games no exception but fans kept wanting to see goku even tho his story was told in “dragon ball” fans still want goku 50 year old ass in story’s like gohan is in his 20s glad he’s getting support 😂
This might be an unpopular opinion but I think it’s a good game to get newcomers into the Dragon Ball series.
Not unpopular at all. Probably the best game for DB newcomers since Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
Is it me or should dlcs already be in the game
My issue with the DLC choices are they brought us to Super with all the cool new transformations, then back to regular SSJ1, I bought and still have not played the trunks arc, The bardock one i feel will be the same.
Battle of Gods and Resurrection F are technically Z movies even though they got adapted into super
Kakarot is definitely in my top 5 dbz games!
I platnuimed this game first week of it being out lol
Oh damn, I just started it last night
this is my personal favorite dbz games thusfar
I enjoyed the Budokai, Tenkaichi series as well as Burst Limit. I didn't play Raging Blast or the Xenoverse games as I feared it would end up being like Budokai and Tenkaichi, where you had to spin the sticks and that caused them to drift after a while, especially playing against friends. FighterZ restored my interest and I watched bits and pieces of Kakarot and I gotta say that I'm very interested in this game. Will definitely have to pick this up.
Xenoverse is nothing like
The other game give the second game a chance very good stuff and it’s always on sale
For less than 10 bucks
@@LimitedEye I heard Xenoverse 2 made a lot of improvements, but that's good to know it's not like the other 2 games. I'll add it to my list.
Raging blast 2 you missed out it took so much from bt and made it more skilled based…jenemba counter skill…and gokus instant transmission was beast aswell as it made skills customizable so you didn’t need 20 gokus of different eras…you just got a whole list if skills that you could set to goku or whoever your playing as and fit it for whatever era…each game sense RB has taken that approach to eliminate multiple of the same characters…even here on “Kakorot” you can be ssj blue and still have kaioken in your move set
Lmfao you don't do any stick spinning in xenoverse and xenoverse 2 at all
You slipped into evil toby mugiuer voice when you kicked the fish and said "what are you gonna do about it" lmfaooo
this is one of the few games ive actually platinumed
