  • If you are wondering how to install a transfer switch into your home to be used by a power station or generator this should help. I install this transfer switch in my shop so that I can use the Project Solar Power Bank 2000 off the grid when the main power goes down. Installing a transfer switch is not as difficult as you might think. Move over the black load wires from the house panel by connecting them to the black wires of the transfer switch. Next connect the Red wires from the transfer switch to the breakers that used to have the black wires. Connect the Ground and Neutral wires from the transfer switch back to the main panel.
    Be sure to turn off the power before sticking your hands into the Main House Panel.

    Well done. Had a hard time finding a video that showed the connections being done. Thanks!

    Have the same type set up, but with a 10 circuit transfer box and 50amps. Can power it with both my 240 generator and from my solar inverter with the 50amp plug. Can run everything in my home except the central ac and oven at the same time.
    Plan to use my exact same set up in puerto rico when we move back next year to retire. Will keep the grid power, but will run everything from solar full time, and simply use the grid if there was ever a problem with my solar. Basically an off grid system with mains as backup. And having this set up allows me to simply remove the solar 50amp plug, and plug in my gas generator instead, in the event of a storm that takes out both the mains and my solar.
    And to anyone who thinks this is too hard to understand, you should know that I knew nothing about how any of this worked until 6 months ago. Watched a few videos that were like this one, and installed the same thing with a couple days worth of knowledge. So trust me, if I can do it, you can as well.

    Great project to prep for an emergency. 300w of lights... looks like a good time to swap to LEDs.

      It's nice to have an off grid shop! The 300w of lights are LED. They are two massive gas station lights. Very bright.

    I see you shut off your breakers in the main panel to simulate a power failure. If you wanted to toggle to the generator side of the transfer switch with grid power still available do you have to shut off the grid breaker. Would be nice to bring solar into your power station and use the transfer switch to provide free electricity to certain circuits.

      Both the system in the video and the one in the link below will soon have solar power doing just that. A whole house battery with solar will connect to the transfer switch and power the building off grid.

    Apologies, your description of how the transfer switch 'sent power to the main panel breaker' at 4:00 confused me and I had to find the installation instructions. Your description at 19:20 was much better that it feeds each house circuit from either the panel breaker or the auxiliary power.

    Can that be used even when you’re not in a power outage situation? say you wanted to run batteries and a inverter to a circuit in your house to run a window AC. But still have grid power to the house control panel.
    could you use that for such a application?

    Can an EcoFlow DELTA 2 Max be wired the same way you have explained in this video without resulting in any damage to the EcoFlow??

    • @thomastrefz
      @thomastrefz 23 дні тому

      Yes. I use the exact same Pro Tran 2 transfer switch with my Delta MAX and I have it backing up 2 mini fridges 2 full size fridges and a Deep Freezer. It surges to 2100 watts then evens out at 5oo watts. Works great :)

    I've got an existing transfer switch for my gas generator with a 240v capacity. Can we also connect a solar system to this switch and just turn on the 120v breakers?

    Can you keep the Power Station charging with the Solar Panels and powering your outlets at the same time?

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  4 місяці тому

      Yes this power station can do that. The input is a little limited. Other power stations such as the Zendure have a much higher solar input.

    I just installed a single circuit transfer switch . Generator has floating neutral so bonding neutral at panel. The big issue is all these switches are illegal in Canada. I am waiting for inspector to come to my house and give me the low down in person. My worry is fire insurance policies if switch is put into service .

    Why did you not wire the transfer switch conduit from below the breaker box or from the side of the breaker box?
    The transfer switch is way too high!

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  Рік тому +1

      Because I have so many wires underneath that breaker box. I did not want to snake the new wires from the transfer switch around those. And drilling through the osb would have been dangerous. On top was the best option. Also I could add a shelf below the breaker for the power station to rest.

    • @DavidHalko
      @DavidHalko Рік тому

      @@LandtoHouse - i see your dilemma. I took a look at your cables coming in the various parts of the box it looks difficult to work with.
      I believe there is electrical code requirements regarding how high, low, and how much front clearance is on subpanels. Too bad you could not just get a longer piece of flexible steel conduit to run the wires through. You might need to revisit this again.

    Is your neutral white wired undersized by making the transfer switch 120V?

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 місяців тому

      Because the power station used only has 2000w output it will not get enough amps to cause an issue.

    I don't understand why there are 4 toggle switches. Is it one toggle for each breaker? It looks very confusing.
    So when you are running with the switch in the line mode, there are two breakers in the circuit?

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  Рік тому

      In a transfer switch the toggle switches determine if the breaker in the main panel or sub panel will be used. Grid power or off grid power.you can select what breakers will work at any time. The middle position of the toggle is off for both breakers.

    I have done something similar at my house. I was recently reading the protran manual and it says the transfer switch should be used with a generator/inverter that does not have the neutral and ground bonded at the inverter. Most inverters are bonded. Is this a big deal?

    • @joetripp123
      @joetripp123 10 місяців тому

      yes, because the transfer switch will be tied to your main panel - which most likely has the ground bonded to the neutral. You shouldn't have more than one neutral/ground bond in the circuit. Check online to see if you can remove the bond in the inverter.
      Your other option is to use a small "critical load" breaker box instead of a transfer switch. Then you would move the circuits to the small panel but they wouldn't circle back to your main panel. Then just have the neutral and ground unbonded in that small panel. You'd lose the ability to flip back to grid power but if your inverter has grid pass through then you could still essentially accomplish the same thing.

    Hi i have the same transfer switch connected to a Ecoflow, there is a way to charge it via ac wall outlet at the same time without damaging the power station?
