The former mayor of San Jose, Tom McEnery, was a boy growing up here in California. The old Gardner his father hired as a landscaper was named Michael. After a few years Tom discovered Michael from Ireland was actually Mick McDonnell who'd fled Ireland after the death of Michael Collins. There's a memorial every year at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery for Mick McDonnell who passed in 1950.
Thanks very much for all the Irish history, Davy! So great to have discovered your channel and all these brilliant chapters of the history we.share. Thanks for all your efforts! A chara.

Every time watching these podcasts, amazed i am by the planning and strategy employed by these brave and intelligent men .. they knew exactly whom they were after .. and they carried out their orders to the letter .. That last incident you described .. where the officials said their exact names to these men .. what courage they had to carry out these missions ., knowing the cost to themselves and their fellows .. prison.. death .. or both .. As a mother of three fine sons.. Daniel, Joseph and Michael .. my heart goes out to the families and loved ones of these heroes .. and sometimes I think about how proud and how heartbroken those mother's and sweethearts felt when their loved one fell for his country .. can really identify with them .,. You bring these stories to life, Davy .. Go raibh maith agat .. go mbeannai Dia thu ⚘☘ Jen999💙
Davey, Another amazing podcast. You put in so much time and work into each one and it shows. You've enriched our knowledge of Irish history better and brought it to life better than any teacher ever could. Thank You!
Hi Davy. I follow all your vids and love Irish history. Joe Leonard was a great uncle of mine (Granny’s brother). I believe he changed his surname after going into hiding for a while. He would have been a Gerahty. Sean Doyle was also a great uncle of mine too, he would have been a brother of my grandfather. An uncle of mine recalls meeting an uncle of his in Dublin some years back, he was an old fella with a hole in his cheek. The hole was caused by a bullet, he was a young lad acting as lookout whilst others were raiding a police station, in the skirmish, he looked over a wall and copped for the bullet. There’s a fair bit of rebel history in my family.
Joe Leonard was named as being involved in the killing of my late father's first cousin- a military lawyer and lecturer in law - in the latter's Dublin lodgings.during the original "Bloody (Red) Sunday!".. My father, a survivor of WW1 as well as the "Troubles", passed from TB when I was an infant and I was never abe to hear his own experiences. .
Very good podcast. Is it possible you can do one on the smashing of the van incident in Glasgow. When the ira tried to free a sligo volunteer. He was being moved to prison in Glasgow and another sligo volunteer tried to free him with help from Glasgow helpers. It started a riot in the Irish neighbourhoods. One of the men killed the other in the civil war back in sligo.
I dont know which two but two of them acted as escorts to Ernesto Guevara on his second visit to Ireland where he visited Micks grave then he left for Bolivia
would love to know the history of each and every man. Love the information you give us would love to have there names and pictures of each of these men.
I was in galiopi turkey i look up a lot of names on the brirish memorial if i am correct they had irish names on british regiments but i thought i saw irish regiments as well cant be certain 👍
Several thousand Irish from both north and south served in the British Army a little known fact if known at all was it was an Irish regiment serving on the Khyber Pass that mutiny'd when they heard other British troops had been sentanced to death for rebelling in Achangel Russia what most dont know nowadays is they were chosen because they had been POW's and the government decided they had not earnt their wages during captivity but because of the Irish Regiment they only shot two sergeants instead.
Hey big bad Davy could you do segments on Michael Brennan of east Clare Tom mcellistrim of Kerry Michael Kilroy of Mayo and dinny Lacey of Tipperary all underrated leaders in Ireland fascinating Ireland David and Goliath type struggle
The Cairo Gang never existed as such. The much heralded photo has been mis-labeled"The Cairo Gang" by later pundits. It, is in fact labeled by the IRA at the time as "The Special Gang". The IRA also have the names of the men on the photo and it is clear that the group comprises men from F Coy of ADRIC who were used for "special" photo shoots, like the Battle of Vico Road . They were not intelligence agents. The Cairo Gang was supposed to be a group of British Intelligence agents in Dublin during the Irish War of Independence with a brief to conduct intelligence operations against members of the Irish Republican Army. The term "Cairo Gang" has not actually been used anywhere prior to 1958, and the first mention in an Irish newspaper is 1962. So unless anyone can find a contemporary reference to it in the War of Independence, the conclusion is that it was never actually used in 1920.
Vinny byrne diedin 1992, fire brigade ambulance from kilbarrack in dublin took him to beaumount hospital, i think the driver was vinny keane, he lived in i think bothar lenn , harmestown near killester., dublin .
The fought to bring about 32 county home rule. They were the redmonite wing of the Irish volunteers. There were no irish divisions at the end of ww1 except the ulster 36th. Wilson chief of Imperial generalstaff had them disbanded and spread out among other British divisions. The 36th were there in the form of the A specials in 1920 to stage a coup de main against nationalists in the six counties supported by the tories.
