Interestingly, it’s really a duo with the late Walter Becker, an instrumentalist who collaborated on the songs with Donald. Although, Walt has passed on, Donald has started touring again as Steely Dan. The band is always a combo of top tier quality studio & jazz musicians who have always brought the band leaders’ ideas into fruition in the studio, & totally nail it in live stage performances.

As for the rest, they hand-picked specific studio players for individual songs. Depending on the mix there might be 6 to 10 players per song. Some would play on just one song, others maybe several per album. So they could easily have 20 to 30 musicians spread over maybe 8 - 12 tracks. Perfectionists without getting out of control. They do jazz/fusion but they can also do some gritty high energy rock. Try the studio version of, "My Old School"!))
