Learned 1-6 from my parents. Remember having roommates that got heavily into debt for purchasing clothes to go clubbing in. Me? I was saving for my goals: college education, car, savings and future house. Fast forward 10-20 years, they were still just getting by and still in debt and I was in a nicer debt-free lifeboat.

Here's the problem. They maybe taught but if you don't show real life practical everyday life usage of the taught lesson it goes in one ear and out the other.

You know everyone is quick to flame the public schools for not teaching this stuff. A few non solicited thoughts- 1) Honestly this should be being taught at home by parents through life modeling. 2) I'm a part of a 4 teacher rotation (all have our own expertise) teaching a "Life After HS Class", Where every senior is required to take the class. Me being mostly a shop teacher-- I include numerous concepts- literally showing how to check/change oil, brakes, car buying, change a tire, fix drywall, basic electricity/plumbing, knot tying/ load securing, and much more. Now being shutdown due to the pandemic, I'm reaching for things that are practical to put on my Google Classroom Online- Hence reviewing this video. Hoping I'm not completely repeating a portion of the Business Ed. Instructors rotation. (But even if so, finance is such a huge issue, they need to hear it again anyway.) 3) I think more schools than most might think are covering elements of practical skills for post HS.

In High School, I did learn how to write checks and balance a checkbook, because I was taking a business math course. So that was good... but nothing about investing, because this was way back in 1972 when I graduated high school! I did, however, learn from my Grandparents that you could put your money in a CD and get more interest than in just a basic savings account!! I find your videos very inspiring and also blunt, but in a good way!! So please keep them coming!! I am learning much from you and your experiences!! Bravo!!

Jeff if high school learned us all 7 skills you mentioned, the world would have been completely different and we would probably have avoided the crisis!!!

I could have used this skill when I migrated to this country. Wasted couple of years trying to look rich but at least it wasn't too late for me, having a decent salary and a stable job being in the medical field have helped me alot to change my course. I now live simply and better financially, for others it might not be appealing but this is how I see my American dream.

I grocery shop every week, I do the envelope system and I would go over my budget by $50-60 wk every week! I decided to fix that by shopping with my grocery store online and picking it up (free service). I don’t overspend and I no longer buy things that I don’t need. Big help!

It is hard to get financial support for college that is why I started my own business helping people fill out financial aid papers and also tutoring for their college courses. If you have the knowledge to help people get financial support to change their lives so they can go to college to help someone in their future as well then it is a blessing by the grace of God to share what you learn. Go to FAFSA to sign up for financial aid and Lord willing this can help you pay for school. Also, make sure you check work-study so they can get you a job while going to school on your campus if available.

Hey Jeff, I love your videos and your enthusiasm and financial knowledge. I’m beginning my financial advisor career as we speak. I just passed my series 7 exam and am about 4 months away from being a fully liscenced FA.
So I wanted to request a few topics for future videos. The first one is what is the best way to save up for a a near future deposit on a house, what is a good realistic percentage on a deposit, and how to structure monthly payments to avoid paying years of interest.
Second, I would love to hear about your start as an FA. I’m sure a lot of your viewers have or dream of having a successful career in the financial services industry.

No I didn't really apply my personal finance class from high school to my life. The reason for that being I already had a job, was already budgeting, did taxes, so I took the class for a fun elective. I enjoy personal finance and have for 12yrs.

I remember the stock market being taught but I had no clue if this applied to me.or if you needed to have certain financial requirements. The terminology was also very complex for me. I had no clue what it was about. But I do know I am educating myself now and all three of my kids. I forwarded this to my oldest son. He is into investments and is only 15. He started a business when he was 13 years old! Jeff if you have ANY other videos that my son could watch, or that you recommend(other than this one) please let me know so I can forward it to him.

The Financial Industry is smart in calling our Crédit Scores, Credit Scores ... when really it's got nothing to do with the customers' ability to be in credit; but their ability to be in debt. ... thus the better our credit scores, the more money they make off us ... the more loans we ask for, the more they love us !!

I agree that teaching it in high school is important but just like your business teacher called you out, there needs to be a shock/wow factor in the lessons to grab their attention. Otherwise they become like you trying to play catch up as a Junior in college even though they had some basics. I will show your video to my middle school students and hope it grabs some attention. Thank you for your energetic video to help create that wow factor.

Because my dad didn't use credit cards I wouldn't use one until I was in my almost late twenty's.I did learn about establishing credit and was doing good . It was my cosigning for someone and got ready to buy a car that I learned that the individual didn't pay, never cosign. Budgeting is a must .I was good at balancing my check account , what was messed up that I learned banks do is that they hold checks, doing this made my checks bounce. I wished that I learned how to invest because I had a little business until I went to college and the military. I never learned about a roth. I wish I'd opened up a bank account while in the military and what I could have done while in. Please help what should people in the military do , my daughter is serving. I did have a 401k to bad I don't have anything to show for a divorced mother of two struggled. I got laid off so instead of rolling over had to use it to survive and my next accumulation had to use to survive while I looked for a better job , my last one was causing health problems

How in the heck did you graduate high school with $20,000 in credit card debt? You can't even get a credit card until you are 18 years old. I just turned 18 about 1 month before I graduated. Well, I guess if your parents are on your account you can get one. You must of grown up in alot more affluent family then I did, because neither of my parents had good credit to do such things. Still not sure what the heck I would of spend $20,000 on before I graduated unless perhaps it was a car. Although I worked and earned my money and my Business teacher in HS prob taught us stuff, but the only thing I remember is how to fill out a check and balance the checkbook. Most importantly I learned that if I put a $2000 in an IRA each year I would be worth over $1 million dollars when I retire.

Honestly, I butted heads with the teacher we had in class to try and seem cool. Spoiler alert, I looked like a jerk.
Today, I do remember some strategies, and for me, some actually work in the opposite for me such as having a $20 bill is harder to spend than 20 $1 bills. For me the 20 $1 bills fattens my wallet and I'm less likely to spend it as a result. 1 $20 bill is barely noticeable so spending it is easier because I don't feel the impact.
However, I do wish I had better listened instead of butting heads because I would likely have learned these lessons soon and not waited until 3/4 through my 27th year of life. I'm hoping by the time I turn 28 in January I'll be on track to getting my finances back in line.

@@wealthhacker I have a plan for the short term, about 6 months into the future. Once my job offers overtime (will be soon due to the busy season starting) I'm going to snag all that I can. I'm also getting a promotion in 2 weeks and I'm working night shift which gets me more for my time. I'm planning on earning as much as I can during the busy season to put a massive dent in my credit card debt (luckily it's under 6k when I finally got ahold of it, had to increase it 4 months ago slightly to get my car fixed, saved money by doing the head gaskets myself. The long term, I'm working on identify what I'm spending, how I'm spending it, and once the data is in I'm going to develop a budget. In the meantime I'm spending only the money I absolutely have to spend. So far, I have $50 to a savings and it will be growing.
Your videos have definitely helped me understand the mindset I need to accomplish my goal of becoming debt free and using credit cards wisely.

I maybe didn't look like Screech in high school, but I felt like him and carried all his anxiety. I studied hard, I based my self worth on my grades and what my friends thought of me, and I got a great Job, got an expensive house in an expensive neighborhood and in the process of building my retirement, while one good friend, jock, popular at night clubs and with women, still live paycheck to paycheck, deep in debt, drive a Hummer on lifts with huge tires, and dating a thirty year old with big boobs.... Yes, that's how he he described her when I asked during small talk.
In my twenties to early thirties I envied his social life, but I'm glad to took the path I took. I wish I found your channel in my twenties... You, Dave Ramsey, Jazz Wealth, etc...
Don't know how to say this "non gay" and don't want to invest the time to figure out how, so... you're a great looking guy with a good head on your shoulders and seemingly a great life with a beautiful wife and children.
