It's great to see things measured in the new international units - statues of liberty, jumbo jets, football fields, feet - it makes everything so clear.:
What sort of football, American football, European football (Soccer), Australian Rules (AFL), NRL, and there's likely a lot more. As for statue of liberty, hell most Americans have not seen it in person, let alone the rest of the world.
it's hard for old guys like me to quantify/conceptualize anything not measured in big macs per gallon or curse-words per cigarette but the world moves on, i guess.
I witnessed a crane accident where the operator told the engineer that the crane couldn't make the pick they wanted. Fortunately when the lattice boom failed he was able to bail out of the crane and was uninjured. Scary!
@jims: and what must have been really annoying is the ladder steps look round instead of flat piece of metal.... I can't imagine climbing a ladder 1 hour to get to work. Do they have a bathroom up there?
what a shame the narrator uses things like weights of cars height of empire state , city block size football pitches etc No mention of feet meters tonnes or other real measurements so people can relate too
Every time they quoted a weight or a height I was just waiting for how many cars it would equal or how many story building would be the same height, lol. It's so ridiculous. Are people really that dumbed down that when told the crane is 200 feet or 60 meters, or can lift 10 tonnes or 22k pounds, they can't relate? Sad.
Of course, they chose the wrong helicopter for assembling that crane in the forest. It should have been a Sikorsky skycrane, which is designed specifically for handling these types of loads.
@@snakeinthegrass7443 The wrong pilot is always a possibility. My point is the Skycrane has rear facing seat where the operator can see the load AND control the helicopter. There are some others with a similar design. I just do not recall their names or manufacturers.

10:26 You obviously don't understand physics at all. Not college stuff. High school physics. Simple stuff. It's called leverage. The boom does NOT change in strength but the leverage against the crane and it's counter weight. The cables and boom can pick up the same weight but the crane will tip over.
In regards to the Port of Virginia: it's a real shame that China can build and ship those large container cranes half way around the world cheaper than America can build them right here. We're sirely losing out on alot of jobs by allowing China to outpace America. Hurts my heart.
What about a simple wooden table chair? Nothing fancy just a normal everyday chair for a dining table or breakfast table for an average middle class American family. How can they possibly make that chair in China or Vietnam and package it and ship it 10,000 miles or more , unload it at a west coast port and ship it across the country and sell it in the southeast for less than it could be made in America?
Average hourly factory wages in China last I checked was $1.00/hour with no benefits. They also have a large supply of slaves that are source through their prison system. Most were arrested for looking at videos of the Tinnamen Square protest and other violations of their speech laws. In addition to cost free labor they have no job safety or pollution control laws. This allows manufacturers to dump metal filings, paint and other chemicals in the nearest river or drainage.
@@danielebrparish4271 that may be true, but the point is that China can and does manufacture these cranes with quality good enough that America buys them.

A crane in middle of a small area in the vast Amazon so nerdy scientists can get their ego massage. Not worth the trouble, just climb a tree like a normal person lol
Haha definitely not the best paid job on a building site especially in the UK, bloody labours get paid more than me so do brickies, chippies, plumbers, sparkies and scaffolders lol

ABSOLUTELY
Excellent video documentary. They don’t get much better than this.
@19:30 What stunning design, architecture, and size! Absolutely beautiful! 😮
Fascinating machines!
Why all that blasted noise in the background when the narrator is speaking? So many video editors do it, and it's very annoying!
@john.... agreed.... at least have it low so we can still hear the narrator. (Unless it it is a AI voice... then don't bother with either 🤣)
An oldie but a goodie.
Yeah pretty sure I watched this documentary on UK TV over 20yrs ago lol

@alan: some of us find it more relatable, actually.
Oregon clip. “Untouched by man” except that ancient forest has been burnt flat many times.

I would like to have seen how they unloaded the giant cranes from the ship to the dock.
