Hey! I know I’m super late to the party but I’ve just finished reading this book for book club. Read it in less than a day because I loved it so much! I do struggle with recalling/making sense of stories/books so I have to gloss over summaries afterwards - that’s when I came across this review! The way you summarised and spoke about this book was absolutely stunning! You really helped me appreciate the book to a much deeper level, for which I’m beyond grateful!!! Such an amazing review, and thanks a mil xx😊
I just finished reading this book, thanks to your recommendation here, and I cannot thank you enough!! An utterly glorious experience, so much to think about.
@@BobTheBookerer I just posted a very short discussion of how this book works so well when read alongside a new poetry book ("Unexhausted Time" by Emily Berry). Perhaps you might like this poetry book as well? I'm aware that this may look like a shameless plug for my channel, but honestly it isn't... I'm simply curious about what you might think, seeing as you mentioned poetry in your last video or two. Warm regards, Eleanor.
@@theonlyrealproperty2567 Oh nice- I’ll check that out, thank you! And I read Unexhausted Time recently, but hadn’t thought of the connections between the two, so that sounds fascinating! Thanks!
Can someone please explain the ending to me? I really wanted to love this book, but he became so confused by what happened at the end that it ended up annoying and frustrating me so much.
Aha, yes! I’ve been at a few books clubs where this book came up and the ending drove a lot of people wild! For me, the ending was a sort of fantastical explosion of reality to show how the world of the submarine was now forever in her, and had forever changed her, to the point that she couldn’t now exist in the ‘real’ world. I saw Armfield talk at an event recently, and she mentioned intentionally breaking the traditions of endings to play with the narrative. But yeah, it’s an ending that has angered a lot of people!
Ended up ordering it from BookD. Just could not abide getting it with the shit NA cover, way further on in the year lol. Can’t wait to get to it. Initially I thought the Sarah Waters quote at the bottom said Sesame Street and I was like maybe it’s not as dark as I thought it was???!
Haha, oh man- I’m curious now! Hahah, yes! Sesame Street should start doing blurbs for big releases. I would love to see Big Bird endorsing Ducks, Newburyport

@@BobTheBookerer thank you for this!! I figured it was implying something along those lines 😅
Wait… you got Jail merch? Do you have the ball and chain as well?
Yeah, just a few more days at my desk and then I’ll be free if I show good behaviour.
@@BobTheBookerer this character arc is sending me
stopped before the spoilers - but this sounds intriguing!
Yesss! Such a beautiful book! I feel like this might be one to break the nemesis spell 😂

I really love this book too. Was def a 5 star read. Mucho better than Devotion ;-)
Yes! Such a beautiful book! And I read it soon after Devotion, so had quite a bit of seafaring lesbians, which was rather lovely.
