Reality is that Jay is getting old, and he is saying and doing some odd stuff, not counting the fact that he is not at all up to date with what was going on.
I doubt he has been to the AMG factory since he got his McLaren Merc.

I have a BA degree in Automotive Technology from 1992. I started my apprenticeship in 1986. Just the difference in technologies in those 6 years is astounding. The industry moves so fast that if you don't constantly study, you're lost in days, not in years. I can clearly remember learning about Can-Bus wiring controls and ceramic pistons in the 80's but didn't see it widely used until well into the turn of the century. My father has a masters degree in the same field from the early 80's. When I brought home an 86 Shelby Daytona, we both walked around it astonished at the technology crammed into it. When we figured out that it could troubleshoot itself, we both knew that (as mechanics), we had just been down graded to parts changers! Thanks Jay, this one is a good reminder of how fast technology is moving.

Mr. Leno and Mr. Kendall thank you for showing us this timeless road going race car.
This Mercedes more then any other they sell today , harkens back to a time when Mercedes was truly a craftsmanship driven company.
To see these race cars on track and they are fighting against much more aero clean cars and beating them always amazes me.
That front end is a true jewel of this car and the resulting blending all the way around the car is just perfect.
When I see just the regular road cars Mercedes makes like this I always smile.
Because this is a car done right.
    In every way.

As a lover of everything automotive Jay always has a valid point of view regardless of the era he and his guest discuss. I enjoy the fact that his recollections draw various parallels between old and new. I suppose that he and I are of the same age but I find that certain aspects of his love of cars and generally what he appreciates about the experience of driving are similar to how I myself experience living in the drivers seat. I too, have always shunned asking the car to do things that it was not ‘intended’ to do, witness launch control and ‘overtaxing’ drivetrains etc. Give me a rolling start putting the car through its paces and enjoying the feedback while rolling on the power. Jay provides me with all things automotive, I so much appreciate the details of restoration and maintenance in the various videos where we get to see the ‘bones’ of what makes cars so enjoyable. I am looking forward to his speedy and complete recovery to the point where he’s back doing what he loves best. A real GENUINE guy…!
