I'm 73 years young. I was born in Bow, my wife was born In Ridley Rd., Dalston. I admit I did simplify the location of Hackney Road being in Bethnal Green, but when I was younger, the other end of Hackney Road terminated in Shoreditch which was a separate borough.I now live in upstate New York, USA.
Blimy yea, I forgot all about Laskys, I remember them, I have great affection for those day's, sadly it all seem's like another life now, for over 50yrs I walked Green St every day of my life, but since I moved I cant even go near there now, I get to sad, you can barely recognize the place now, even the football ground will be gone soon, it's all over, thank's for your great memories, Iv really enjoyed your tale's, and thank's for watching the video, I wish you all the best.
We are back in New York and for us, it is unseasonably mild. We have not yet had a frost which is really unusual. If you have a few minutes on your hands, check out the "East London Forum" and find the thread for the Duragon Arms, a pub located just off Homerton High Street. The pub was a great place on Friday and Saturday nights (back in the late 50s and early 60s). I made a couple of posts there four or five months ago.
Thank's for your comment, and you are right, a lot of big stars appeared at the Granada East Ham, my sister saw the Beatles there in the 60s, its a bingo club now, but at least its still there, unlike so many lovely cinema buildings that have been demolished.
Thank you for your kind word's, I am pleased you like the video, I know your website well, I have spent many an hour reading the article's and I know you have some great picture's on there to, I find it to be a excellent reference for anyone interested in the East End of the past, I always tell people about it, thank's again, all the best.
Lovely memories I saw Johnny Cash & June Carter, Stevie Wonder, Gene Pitney at the East Ham Granada 1966-1967 thirty bob a ticket I think we paid at the door, not a lot of people believe these people came to East Ham to perform. I saw Concert for Bangladesh with the immortal George Harrison at Odeon Mile End.@1970-71, many thanks
Well I'm not sure of her sir name I only ever knew her as "MAC" at that time she was middle aged, quiet short and a bit "tubby" with glasses, (that don't sound very flattering but she was nice) the foyer was lovely and I always used to love going up the sweeping stair's on each side to the circle, also I was fascinated by the little recessed lights high up on the foyer ceiling with their soft muted bulb's, lovely, the ABC is a car park now ! ! !
I did check out your website and think that it is great, but I do have one minor change to suggest. You posted "The Empress cinema was on Mare Street, Hackney, which is the continuation of Cambridge Heath Road once the junction of Well Street is passed. " It becomes Mare Street after the junction of Hackney Road (which is not in Hackney). I grew up in Bocking Street.
I just had a look at Google Earth and I may be off by about a quarter of a mile. It would appear that Cambridge Heath Road changes to Mare Street as he goes over the Regent's Canal, the dividing line between Bethnal Green and Hackney.
My wife's relatives still live in the same house in Ridley Road where my wife was born. I am going to Texas today. If I should fail to provide a prompt response to any post, its not negligence. In Ridley Road, about 2/3 rds down on the right, on an empty piece of ground, is a man selling suitcases etc. If his name is Allen, tell him Uncle Jim in the USA says "Hello"
Thank you for your comment, I to spent hundreds of hours trying to find a picture of the Odeon Canning Town, I remember the building as a derelict structure in the 1960s before it was finally demolished but as much as I tried I could not find any photo's of the building until this year when I discovered the excellent book "ODEON CINEMAS OSCAR DEUTSCH ENTERTAINS OUR NATION", it has a number of lovely photos of the Canning Town Odeon outside and even the interior but make sure you look for VOLUME 1 as volume 2 deals with post ww2, good luck
With regard to your other interest in the Imperial Canning Town there is a photo of it on the website "THE NEWHAM STORY" it only has one photo and I'm afraid it's not the best as traffic was going past as the photo was taken and blocking the view but you can still see most of the frontage, as an aside to that, I once had the misfortune to fall off the front of the stage of the IMPERIAL when I was in there with my late father looking around shortly before it was demolished ! ! ! ! happy days ? ?
That's interesting, when the ODEON closed the building went through a very uncertain time, in fact I thought it was going to be demolished, it lay empty for year's, then it was vandalized and extensively damaged by a very big fire, (started deliberately by vandals), by that time it was in a terrible state, then in the 90s it was bought by an Asian company and completely refurbished, I think it dose quiet well now, at least it has been saved, thank you for your comment and personal story.
I did indeed visit your website and I commend you for your excellent work, I must admit I was dismayed to see the up to date photo's of the Granada Tooting, I have to say the outside look's extremely "tacky" now compared to the way I remember it, I spent many an hour standing outside there waiting for a bus to Wimbledon speedway whenever West Ham or Hackney were racing there, One question, I only knew the Essoldo (Bethnal Green Rd) as the REX, when did the name change ? thank's for the info.
I think that the vetting is to keep out trolls. The Ridley Rd. guy is the partner of my niece. Ridley Rd was a place where Oswald Mosley went to practice rabble rousing/anti-jewish rallies.I went to London Fields School. We lived close to Broadway Market; my uncle had a greengrocer's stall there. My dad was a bumaree in Smithfield Meat Market.
I remember everything you say, I only lived round the corner in Green St, I lived there over 50yrs, only left 5yrs ago, just a thought, as you worked there in 1975 I dont suppose you remember "MAC" do you ? the Scotish lady who used to be in the cash box, I knew her well.
You might enjoy my new website (stories-of-london) where I wrote about the GRANADA THEATRE CIRCUIT and the glorious Odeon Isleworth (the site needs a .org after the name!). Let me know what you think.
Really great stuff - many thanks - perhaps you can do another one and include the EXCELSIOR in Bethnal Green and the EMPRESS in Hackney as well as the ABC on the corner of Well Street Hackney - all wonderful places. You can read about these great cinemas and see alot of photographs at my website at East End Memories. I am not putting the webaddress as YOU TUBE does not like it - just google the name. Cheers again for the great video.
Tower Hamlets???? If you use that name, you're obviously much younger than I am. I am not the least bit offended and I even corrected my own post to show that Mare Street starts on the North side of the canal.
just lovely good old days thank you very much .

Never been able to find photos of the Imperial Canning Town either

Lovely, but what happened to our local "flea pit" - the Essoldo, Manor Park? Cheers, Les.

Several were very 'Art-Deco' in design, particularly the Odeon, Mile-End and the Granada, East Ham
ah just Fab, my first date at the Odeon by green Street East ham, then the Beatles visit to East ham Granada happy long ago memories (sigh)
