Great video! The only thing I would add would be that garlic heads should never be left to dry in the sun. In fact, harvest is best done on a cloudy day or when there is shade available. But the heads and stalks should be laid out or hung up in the shade with good ventiation.
Garlic Noob here--planted in October here in farther N. Commifornia, low inland, 9a. They were 6" tall a couple weeks later going to 10" or so before real winter temps, we only get light infrequent frost so they stayed green if dormant until recent months, by now, late April, full height.
Oh man I am SO Excited to hear this! If there's anything I can do to help just let me know. Remember - gardening is a journey and there will be plenty of successes and flops along the way. Don't worry about the yield and outcome, just focus on enjoying your time in the garden and running little experiments to figure out what helps the plants grow best. If you focus on those two things, then I guarantee your harvests will end up greater than anything you could have imagined!
Thanks Jordan. First time planting garlic here in Iowa Zone 5. I had forgotten about the Spring time fertilization, so will pull back the leaf mulch and lay on some fertilizer. I planted in late November, because word had it that here in Iowa, an October planting will give unwanted green growth in November. The ground usually freezes solid, so over the 4" planting I laid on 6" leaf mulch. This was a bit too much for some of the garlic, but most of it eventually popped through in mid February and is now growing like a champion. I'm for leaving the mulch in place because it reduces weed competition and holds moisture, making it unnecessary to water the garlic. So far so good. The plants look great, but we'll see what the harvest is like. BTW, I got my garlic from BJ Gourmet Garlic Farm in Ohio. They're somewhat clerically challenged (i.e., answering the telephone, tracking orders) but the garlic came in time for our November planting, and it looks like we're at about 98% germination rate. Probably would have been 100% but for the heavy mulch (my fault). Give them a look if you're into specialty garlic. In our case, it was Korean garlic. They sent us nice looking cloves.
Jordan I followed your tips last year and had an amazing crop of garlic this summer! I will be following each of the steps again and planting my next years crop on October 20th! Thank you!
This helped so much! My brother in law has been coming to get my horse manure for the past few years for his garlic and he gave me a head to grow this year. They are looking awesome (apparently my horses produce great compost 😂) and I wouldn’t have remembered I should cut the scapes if I hadn’t looked you up. Thanks for an easy step by step tutorial on this. I’ll be looking up your other videos. PLUS, you’re from my favorite place in the world! Hi Jordan, I've been growing my own garlic for many years in our home garden in Gibsons but still picked up some good tips from your videos! One thing that you might mention is the importance of rotating your garlic crop, if possible, to avoid diseases like garlic rust. Thanks for all your good work!
Hey Evelyn! I actually don't do any crop rotation - which is 100% personal preference. The reason for this is because I am able to amend that bed every year to ensure the soil is ready for garlic to grow, and I have not experienced any diseases such as garlic rust. In the event that I were to get something like garlic rust, at that point I'd then do a rotation - but because of using so much compost I haven't run into such an issue yet!
My garlic sprouts almost straight away after planting say 2 -3 weeks. I love growing garlic and I live in South Australia so our growing season is long and winter here are relatively warm min 4°c if it ever gets late low. So knowing I get growth from my garlic as soon as I plant it I came up with an idea to start my garlic in water beds for 2 weeks before planting and this has been a great starter for the bulb I have been growing my garlic with this method for many years and have never had so much fun and the kids love to see the garlic from before we plant them
Very concise and simple tutorial!!! I love it. I grew garlic this year and skipped a few of these steps. Next year I will incorporate all of your steps. Thank you.
Very nice video. Garlic is awesome to grow. Biggest cloves from the biggest bulbs grows the biggest bulbs for sure. I find the more you water the bigger too. Pepperman Out!!😊

Great question Michelle! You absolutely can - this causes additional stress which forces more of the energy back to the bulb developing. Feel free to stop watering about 7 days after cutting off the garlic scapes! :D
@mindandsoil, great garlic growing video. I have a question, I'm new to gardening in Calgary and have a Sproutbox. Do I have to insolate the Sproutbox to ensure my garlic doesn't freeze over the harsh winters here in Calgary?
Great video! I have been wanting to grow garlic for years but never got around to it. The site says the kits are sold out, is there any estimate at when they'll be restocked?
Jordan, great video. The only thing you didn't discuss was the watering of the garlic. Do they need to be watered during the Fall and Winter while dormant? And how much do you water them once the shoots appear? Thanks, Jeff
Thank for the well done video and guidance. I have a question regarding the planting phase, I am in Zone 7 (foothills of the Ozarks). Instead of basing on the month, can you elaborate more on the ideal temperatures to plant the garlic? I tried last year and planted late October, however by December I had garlic with 6-8” leaves already and they died back when it really got cold however didn’t come back. Also as I am thinking , I may not have planted deep enough? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Jordan, I'm thinking about companion planting with garlic. A couple of questions. Do you plant Nastertium (to distract pests) or other seeds in the Fall or wait to plant in the garlic bed in the Spring? Also, can I plant bulbs (eg. Gladiolas) in the back of my garlic raised bed without negatively impacting the garlic? The bulbs will be North of the garlic on the South side of my house. Thinking of maximizing sun for the garlic but still having some flowers streetside.
Great questions Adrian! I would wait until Spring time to plant the Nasturtium - they need the Spring warmth to go into growth mode! I would do the same for any other crops that will come to mind. I haven't planted Gladiolas so I can't speak from lived experience - however, I would be comfortable doing what you've outlined there. Give them a good 6" at least from where the Gladiolas are planted to ensure their root system can grow as is needed :D
This is my fifth time coming back to the video! I attended the happy hour and really appreciate this excellent video :) I am growing on a balcony and have been watering, at what point should I stop? If anyone knows about covered balcony container garlic growing, let me know what you're doing (south coast BC location) thanks!
Oh that's fantastic!! So feel free to stop watering when 2-3 of the leaves have died off, or beginning of July for a date reference. It can be a little bit scary but it's a very valuable form of stress to be adding into the mix!

I think it will be great! The plant doesn't put on any growth above the surface in the winter. So, the clove is planted in the Fall and nothing will emerge until February/March - and I suspect by then the days will be starting to get longer on your end so I could see it working really well!! Make sure you get a nice hardy variety so that it can handle that cold winter - and then plant it 4" deep so it is well insulated by the soil. Thank you @mindandsoil. Provided the shop has hard variety, Do I just buy builds from the grocery store? Or should I be looking for ‘starter’ bulbs at a specific plant shop (which is far away and less convenient to get too)?
@@serenalee-cultura4085 Great question! If the shop has hard neck varieties (just confirm the variety and that it is a hard neck variety), then you can absolutely use that!
This is such a great question, Val! I might have to do a follow up video just on watering. Garlic definitely enjoys a good drink, but also doesn't want to be sitting in water. As such, you'll want to be taking direction from the soil itself on when to water. Oh interesting! So with those larger critters generally the best approach is a physical barrier. Given that they are diggers, you might need to dig down 6" or so and put a piece of plywood in so that they can't get beneath it, and then something like row cover over top as well so that they can't get in from above. If you have already planted your garlic I would likely leave it in the ground (unless it was just in the last 1-2 days). You can then sprinkle a 1/2 handful of worm castings above each of the holes and then massage it into the top 1"of soil - that will be super helpful!
