  • **Not for broadcast without permission** This is my unedited video of the passage of Hurricane Michael moving through Marianna, Florida Wednesday afternoon, October 10, 2018.
By approximately 1 p.m., hurricane force wind gusts had begun in southeastern Marianna. I took video and some still photos as Hurricane Michael passed directly overhead between 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The eye passed directly over my location at the America's Best Value Inn, 2086 Florida Highway 71, between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. Based on my observation from the surface and looking at radar images that were later sent by friends, it appeared the center of the eye of Michael passed over around 3:15 p.m.
Because my phone battery was weak, power was out, and my phone signal was weak, I turned off cellular service and took as much video as I could of the storm. The most impressive things I noticed were the length of time the winds were sustained at hurricane strength and the manner in which they relentlessly ramped up. The best way I could describe it is that winds ramped up to a certain "plateau" speed. Then a higher gust would move in (you could usually hear and see the higher gusts and heavier rain sheets coming before they arrived). The winds would again plateau at this higher level until the next gust approached and an even higher plateau was reached. This process repeated itself from about 1:40 p.m. until the eye arrived at approximately 3 p.m.
The approach of the eye was clear to see. I was without radar data so I was relying on extrapolating what I saw previously on radar and what I was observing. In the minutes before the eye approached, precipitation intensity decreased, although the winds remained high. I observed a lighter sky appearing on the horizon behind the darker clouds. As the rain and wind decreased rapidly, it became obvious that we were in the eye. People started walking around. Birds started flying. Since my battery was down to about 15 percent on my phone, I quickly walked to my car and tried to charge the phone. I received a few texts with radar images sent by friends. Those images confirmed what I observed regarding the eye. By the time the eye reached Marianna, it had filled in with cloud cover, but the rain and wind stopped, temporarily.
While in my car, I thought about what would happen after the eye passed. Winds would resume rapidly and come from the opposite direction, the west. The northern eye wall had produced considerable damage. Numerous trees were snapped off and uprooted. Parts of the hotel were removed and scattered about, along with other debris. There was a metal portable carport that had been blown into a position just west of my car. I decided to move my car, which proved later to be a good move! The winds from the southern eye wall came out of the west and blew that metal carport exactly where my car had been parked.
At about 3:30, the southern eye wall arrived. As expected, high winds arrived quite suddenly. Despite the fact I was aware this would happen, during the short time it took me to get from my car back to the hotel, I was hit by a small piece of debris on my leg. The southern eye wall was intense, but not as intense as the northern eye wall. Despite the lower intensity it was probably more dangerous. All of the debris that had been broken loose from the northern eye wall was now being blown back to the east by the southern eye wall. All of the people at the hotel who were initially excited by the extreme winds evidently grew tired of watching it. During the northern eye wall there were dozens out of their rooms watching the storm from their doorways, the walkway or the breezeway. By the arrival of the second eye wall, I believe I was the only one still watching.
By about 5:00, winds were still very strong, but I found a brief time window when I could make a dash for my car. I was soaking wet. My phone had lost power, so I took a few minutes to start the phone charging, eat a snack, and prepare to (hopefully) leave. My goal was to get all the way back to Alabaster, Alabama, but I didn't know exactly what obstacles I would face.

I live about 45 miles south of Marianna in a small town called Wewahitchka. We went 11 days without power. Some went more than 20 days plus without power. Mexico Beach is about 22 miles southwest of us (eye went over). Storm surge in that area was anywhere from 21 feet to 26 feet. Mexico Beach, Tyndall AFB and Callaway looked like a war zone. Sooooo many trees went down. My daughter came in from Gainesville, FL. (not knowing if we were alive or not). Got to Blountstown which is between Wewahitchka and Marianna. It took 6.5 hours to go 24 miles because of all the trees down on HWY 71.

we volunteered at the state park there for two years in a row in October. Both years we were evacuated to a parking lot in our RV. This past year I said no, I will not ever go back to risk being in a parking lot in an RV if one hits so we did not go. God was looking out for us because had we been in a parking lot in an RV when this hit we would never have survived it. Breaks my heart to see how that town was destroyed but I dont think I ever want to be there in Hurricane season again.

We didn’t get the eye coming over but it was about 20 miles west from my house.. just a straight on full speed not so forgiving cat 5. That white wall of wind and rain. Once it was over it was like coming out of a storm shelter and seeing all the damage. Won’t ever forget that next morning waking up to the smell of pine and hearing those chainsaws that had been running tirelessly all night long.

For those of you watching who aren't local:
As of July 2021, many buildings in Marianna (and other areas in Jackson County) *still* show Hurricane damage.
A lot of the tree farms and fields never recovered, you can STILL see halved trees when you drive around the county. And many natural recreation areas (parks, hiking trails, etc) are still an absolute mess from this Hurricane.
Even Torreya Park is still showing damage.

@@fuzzybuddybay Hate to disagree, but as a PC resident for most of the past 56-years, I have to. In that time, Michael is the only major hurricane to make a landfall here. There have been Cat 2s like Earl (which nobody seems to remember) and Tropical Storms. But, the big ones like Eloise and Opal didn't make landfall here, both were off to the west. Opal actually made landfall at Pensacola Beach, Eloise was around Destin, IIRC.
Michael crossed the coast between TAFB and Mexico Beach. The east side of town actually experienced the eye of the storm. I was in Callaway, saw the eye for more than 20-minutes. That's a first in a lifetime, and the strongest storm to hit the Panhandle in more than 150 years.
I documented my experience and have videos on YT if you're interested. But, I have to say this guy had a better vantage point than I did.

It wasnt really that bad scary when you do what you can move your family from one room to the next bc of situations near for safety but knowing you can act silly to keep your child from panicking then being able to go out everyday after the storm even months after to help others. Cooking for everyone and my whole family involved in the community was worth it...it brings the community together...however there was some families that made money off the donations they had received was just heartbreaking

I'd wanted to be a storm chaser ever since I'd seen Warren Faidley's photography as a young boy. Looking back, I can say that it was probably the most fun I'd ever had. Now, that's not to say you should try this yourself. It's beyond dangerous and I'd taken multiple unnecessary risks that would have killed me had it not been for my strange fortune but I can say that I'll remember every moment forever.

People here still have tarps for roofs. Or live in campers or trailers. Trust me you do not want to experience this "Thrilling Storm". It is still a freaking nightmare for many here. Over a year later. I only lost a shade tree. My home was fine my family fine but many friends n neighbors did not fare well and are still trying to recover.

@@LouisianaAstroRambler actually no. My daughter was not at the shelter just my brother and me. My daughter had to flee during the storm when winds ripped through house she was staying at. She then fled to a friends house. There a tree fell destroying the roof then she ran to a church across the road as what was later described as tornadoes destroyed the friends home. Again my family and home survived, but I stick by my No you did not want to be in the storm. You talk about exhilarating. How can you be so callous? People died in the both storms horribly. There is nothing about a CAT4 or 5 that anyone with God given sense would want repeated. The shelter we heard and saw the tornados. That's not exhilarating at all if your in the path with no where to run. Last week we had tornado that disapaited 400 yards from my home. I don't have a car and I live in a trailer. There is no storm shelter except the plastic bath tub and no way for a disabled woman and elderly man to go. Maybe you should think about the true costs of those storms instead of a fleeting high. Maybe if people used more common sense than looking for exhilaration they would realize how dangerous it is to screw with these storms.

3:33. NOW you’re in the core of the storm. With static winds near 130mph gusting to 160mph and a forward speed in the eastern core of 10-12mph. You are experiencing a Cat 5 storm for a cpl hours. Devastating! I’m surprised not to hear wind screaming at those speeds. Those trees may be adding fluid friction vs. being in a parking garage where it sounds like hordes of banshees screaming your name for 6-8 hours non-stop. Love chasing! Love FLA.

    • @Vector_Ze
      @Vector_Ze 2 роки тому

Michael was barely a Cat 5 at landfall, and quickly fell to Cat 4.
The center of the storm passed just east of this location. At the time, the maximum sustained winds were 130-135 MPH on the EAST side, likely a little less in the western eyewall, where this video was recorded, more than 50-miles inland from landfall. I assume by 'static winds' you meant maximum sustained winds, since static winds makes no sense (dead calm).
Since they were in the western eyewall, the storm's forward motion wouldn't add to the wind velocity, it would subtract from it. And, because Michael was moving at a good clip, dangerous conditions only lasted a couple hours at any given location.
I've watched this video several times since it was published. Good capture, for sure.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!👍, I don’t think I have ever seen anything in nature as awesome or frightening as this, I expect it was much more frightening in reality with the debris and noise of the roof trying to blow away. Whoever designed the sign pole should be congratulated, it took a hell of a beating, and stood up to the worst Mother Nature could throw at it, if that’s not the best engineering design ever I would eat my hat. We’re at 28:00 minutes and it’s still standing, will it or won’t it last the duration? My guess is maybe, it’s done really well but. Very very good decision to move the car, saves a lot of paperwork to get the insurance company to cough up for repairs or replacement. Well I guess the sign pole didn’t quite make it, but it put up a valiant fight. You had a few close calls yourself, but I thank you for taking the time and risk for us, especially those of us who are unlikely to ever see that kind of raw power caused by Mother Nature, not quite as raw o video I don’t think, but that doesn’t change the impact it has. thanks again for sharing your excellent quality and awesome visual experience with us all. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
P.S, This is probably a really really dumb question, but why does the wind direction reverse once the eye-wall has passed, sat thinking and if the hurricane rotates anti-clockwise (for arguments sake) the surly the second part after the eye has passed is still anti-clockwise, or am I just being totally dumb?
