    I'm a professional weather spotter with NOAA and your video is among the best I've seen, I would estimate peak wind gusts were up around 120 mph which is equivalent to a Cat 3 hurricane but over land! I'm hoping no one was injured & your house didn't sustain severe damage. That was an unusual storm to say the least actually one of the worst I've seen in my 50 years following weather!

      Facepalm... this video was no where near 120 man... I lived through the eye wall of Hurricane Ivan which actually was a Cat 3 of 115 mph and it was twice as fast as this. I’ve also been through several other Hurricanes in Pensacola, Florida. I’ve also extensively studied meteorology for 27 years now.
      This was a horrible horrible storm but in this particular video in his location I would say 75 mph would be more accurate. If you’re a professional weather spotter then you should know the damage in his neighborhood is consistent with Cat 1 damage.
      Cat 3 hurricanes don’t leave many trees standing at all... heavy heavy structural damage to homes and businesses occur. There were a bunch of limbs down and some structure damage in the background but all of those homes in his neighborhood did just fine... didn’t even see any shingles flying off.
      Now around town and other areas probably saw Cat 2 winds as there was some serious reports of damage but this video confirms that most guys are bad judges of two things... size and wind speed 😂. You hear it in every bad weather video on UA-cam... “that’s a hundred!” And I’m here like nah, 45 or 55 man... 😂

    There is a guy that was in his workshop which was made out of metal and the only other solid structure in the entire workshop was the bathroom. So he ran into the bathroom and took shelter there. Well a few seconds later a massive gash is ripped into the roof and 2 seconds later everything starts to fall apart. He quickly shuts the door and he hunkers down waiting for the storm to finish. When the storm had finished the only thing left standing was the bathroom and the back wall. Everything else was demolished. He had cars in the workshop (including what looked a super expensive car) and of course they were ok. He also had the workshop's mascot in the bathroom as well, a frog, so he wasn't alone. But it was amazing to watch what happened

    Thanks for editing and rotating the video. Those winds are hurricane like and if you've never been in one before you don't open exterior doors to allow the wind to get underneath your roof. If the wind had shifted and blown into your garage it could've lifted your roof off the house. Derecho's make a case for changing building codes to match hurricane standards such as roof and wall ties along with garage door bracing to prevent blow ins.

      Jennifer lawrence, you get more notice when a hurricane will hit landfall so there is a bit more prep time. Here in Iowa we get tornadoes and sometimes severe storms. THIS was beyond severe! Every and I do mean EVERY street/home had some damage. I’m surprised that most houses stood strong. In areas of hurricanes they have different building standards to go by simply because they DO experience hurricanes EVERY year. This isn’t the first derecho in east central Iowa but this was definitely the worse at 140mph winds.

      @givemepizzaorgivemedeath3983 3 роки тому +11

      Hello Ukraine!...... My understanding of the actual weather phenomenon seen in this video is the result of extremely powerful updrafts ahead of the storm which literally dislodge winds associated with the jet stream, and redirects those winds to the surface of the earth. Essentially, you're seeing trees being blown over by winds that are normally 25,000+ feet (7600+ meters) above the ground.

    • @evgfe
      @evgfe 3 роки тому +10

      @@givemepizzaorgivemedeath3983 You probably mean downdrafts? In addition, if you carefully watch the video, you will notice that at moments of strong gusts the downpour also intensifies, that is, there is something like rain bombs along the entire storm line.

Since the 10th of August, I have watched about 10 or 20 other people's videos....and I don't know Iowa...but YOUR video, in YOUR location, Hands Down is the BEST (I've seen). I live 30 miles north of Madison, WI; we did not get the detector. Just some subsidiary wind from your terrible storm. I feel so bad for all the unfortunate farmers who lost their crops, along with their homesteads. Many, many thousands of not only Iowans, but also people in other states as well had terrible damage to their personal property, damage to wherever they may work, damage to those "big green things" that many people nurture and care-for from the day they, perhaps, plant them in the ground! I hope I never have to experience an event like the one you caught on video!! Watching the roof disintegrate and seeing all the papers and insulation fly out of that structure in the early part of your video was unreal, too! Thankfully--derechos are not a commonly occurring storm. Yes-Thankfully!

    Great video and you all kept calm throughout the storm. I experienced hurricanes Andrew (Cat. 5) and Wilma (Cat. 3) in greater Miami, FL. There was a small airport with weather station two miles from mi home. In both hurricanes we experienced sustained winds of up to 120 mph and gusts close to 150 mph. Unfortunately these peak conditions lasted close to three hours in both storms. Impressive how powerful and intense the weather can be.

If there was ever wind gusts above 100 mph, most roofs and trees would be gone. Although there have been microbursts and tornadoes, strongest tornado ever within 20 miles of my location was an ef2, and strongest microburst had an estimated wind speed of 120 mph, although I don't count the microburst, because the winds were not recorded, even though every tree in the path of it was snaped, not one survived.

      Maybe they're using the garage for storage- we don't know because they don't show the inside of the garage. UA-cam comments.... What're you gonna do?

    as a fellow 2-tone silver/gray Vibe owner, all I can think is "bring the Vibe in".... "Bring the Vibe in".... "BRING THE VIBE IN!"... glad you all are OK. We had one go through southern IL a number of years ago. I live about half an hour south of where the worst of it was, but it still tore up a lot in our community. Watched it from the front door of the music instrument store I owned on our main street, which was pretty unnerving, considering the front of the store was floor-to-ceiling glass. Had to lock the front door, it kept blowing it open. There are videos here on youtube of it hitting Carbondale and Marion, IL, which are just north of me, and where the worst of it hit. I had never heard of a Derecho before that day. I don't think I'll soon forget what it is, though.
