I once showed the family the Mr. Creosote skit after Thanksgiving Dinner. My Father told me to go home, and they didn't talk to me for a month.
Excellent! Did you offer them some 'waffer thin' After Eight mints at the end?
@@speleokeir Their lips were pressed so tight you couldn't have pushed a piece of paper in
Sometimes you've got to read the room 😆
That’s the one scene in the movie I just can’t stand to watch. It just goes on and on! Once was enough for me.
comedy is all in the timing.
Since you like this sort of thing, here’s an interesting anecdote that was related to me by a friend of mine who met Eric Idle. My friend got to be a roadie for a show Eric Idle was doing and at one point, Idle decided to have lunch with all the roadies and he asked them who their favorite Python was and then he’d tell them a story about whoever they chose. Someone said that Terry Jones was their favorite Python and Idle told a story about a time he and Jones went to an orchestra performance together. Apparently, the conductor suddenly fell ill and couldn’t conduct the show, so the staff at the music hall asked if by any chance there was a qualified conductor in the audience. Terry Jones happened to be a qualified conductor and agreed to conduct the show. Funny thing is, by the end of the show, he was completely naked. He did his job conducting the show, but all the while, he was gradually removing his clothes. It was the best orchestra performance Idle had ever attended.
Well if he didn't have a conductors baton with him I suppose he had to improvise and wave something else about instead!
I believe Terry Jones enjoys performing sans clothes. 😱😳
OMG - thank you! Terry Jones was amazing - and incredibly missed!
Those of us that have been able to sing every song word for word since 1983 appreciate your reaction!

If you enjoy John Cleese then you must see "A Fish called Wanda". It is brilliant. Also won lots of awards. It is not actually a Monty Python movie but there are two of them in it. It also stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Kline. Cheers.
Seconded. Just filling in that the other Python in that movie is Michael Palin.
A Fish Called Wanda is absolutely hysterical! And while there are too many slow bits for many, I personally have a big soft spot for Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits.
For which Kevin Kline won an academy award, which should not go unmentioned.
Fawlty Towers is also a must for Cleese fans
A fish called Wanda has been watched and will hopefully be uploaded soon! 😁
Aaaah Mr Creosote. My favourite part of this movie!!!! I saw this film when it came out in a small theatre with about ten people in it. I laughed so hard at this skit I almost fell out of my chair. No one else laughed. At all. Made me feel special. :D
One reviewer described the "Mr. Creosote" sketch as "resembling a medieval morality play on the evils of gluttony."
Also: An old friend of mine had a fishtank containing a lionfish. Lionfish only eat live food, so every few days he would put a guppy in. Upon seeing it, the lionfish would freeze motionless - then suddenly, it would be six inches further ahead and the guppy would have vanished. We named the lionfish "Mr. Creosote."
Omg really? This sounds like my parents lol. I think they were dying of laughter while most were disgusted.
Michael Palin ad-libbed the line “I didn’t eat the mousse”
the meaning of life will grow on you every time you watch it over and over and over because despite its slating there's so much more to this flick every time you re watch it...
The "Every Sperm is Sacred" scene was choreographed by Arlene Phillips one of the original judges on Strictly Come Dancing
Terry Gilliam said some time ago that they blew most of the film budget on that one scene and had to raise more funds. Money management was never their strong suit
@@stephenbesley3177 that’s hilarious 😂
There are 2 kinds of people in the world, those who hate Mr Creosote and those who love him
I guess that means that there are 6999999999 persons that hate Mr Creosote and one that love him.
But its wafer thin....
Fun fact about the "lesson" - the joke here was that as soon as something was presented as a school lecture, it immediately became boring, no matter the subject.
Yes - seems as though even "sex" was presented as not only boring, but embarrassing -- lol
I recommend "Time Bandits" and "A Fish Called Wanda". Also aloe vera will fix the sunburn or a soak using cold tea.
If I could Like this comment multiple times, I would.
Time Bandits is the best movie involving the Pythons - even stars R2-D2 Kenny Baker and Sean Connery.
I fiercely love Time Bandits! What a brilliant film!
Time bandits and Erik the Viking!
@@jndaley yes, EtV is great.

@@jndaley How about Jabberwocky?
Just in case anyone was wondering, In the opening short “The Crimson Permanent Assurance “ , the younger executive , who jumped out the window , was played by none other than Matt Frever better known to many Americans as Max Hedrom.
The Crimson Permanent Assurance was the contribution of Terry Gilliam, the American member of the group and animator. It went HUGELY over budget, but was a wonderful look at the future of Gilliam's later filmmaking style.
The protracted prologue at the beginning, with separate credits, and the "Our Feature Presentation" card hearken back to a time when a showing of a feature film would be accompanied not just by previews of coming movies, but perhaps an animated cartoon, a newsreel, or other short subject.
Add The Rutles to your list. A spoof of the Beatles history. The cameos with Harrison and Jagger are very good.
Sincere thanx for showing MP's MOL brilliant,
The hospital scene always cracked me up….until I started working in healthcare then I really appreciated the truth in the scene, especially the administrator walking into an OR without proper PPE on. Typical. They’re all clueless.
Don’t forget to watch one of Monty Pythons lesser known gems called “Time Bandits” as well as their concert film “Live at the Hollywood Bowl”.
Remember, “the meaning of life is what each person thinks it is and what I think doesn’t amount to a hill of beans.” - George Burns as God in the movie “Oh God”.
Aloe vera. Not processed shite, just get a raw aloe cactus, tear off a leaf and smear the juices on the sunburn. Nothing better has ever been invented.
Definitely be careful with the thorns. Thorns on sunburn is not fun.
So true. I burned my thumb on the toaster once and tried cold water and then ice. I remembered that I had an aloe leaf in the fridge. I cut a slice and taped around my thumb and instantly it felt better.
I’ll keep that in mind. Thank you!
When the movie came out, it had the tag line on the poster "Something to offend everyone". Damn straight. (also, one of the nude angels in the nightclub is Jane Leeves from Fraser and Hot in Cleveland.)
She was also one of Benny Hill's "Hills Angels"
Look closely and you'll see that none of the angels is topless - they are all wearing fake boobs!
I love the French waiter scene - the way his story has such a strong and deep personal meaning to him but our (implied) indifference sends him into a rage. Brilliantly acted too.
Oh, have you seen "This is Spinal Tap" yet? It's probably the funniest movie I've ever seen!
Love "Spinal Tap" - a friend of mine recommended it to me without noting that it was satire.. and being out of work, I watched it alone.. and it took me about 15-20 minutes to "get it" -- sad to admit, I was mocked by my husband over that for years -- should never have admitted it! :)
@@GinMae To be fair, it's not immediately obvious that it's satire. Sure, the director says a few "off" things during his intro but they could be mistaken for the comments of a deeply "creative" person or be attributed to cultural differences. However, as you stated, after 15 - 20 minutes, it becomes quite obvious.
As for your husband mocking you, just make him smell the glove - that'll sort him right out!
@@bhurzumii4315 Well, thank you for giving me a break on that! I'm not an unusually dense person, really!... :)
@@GinMae when the members of Judas Priest first saw it they thought it was a documentary
@@reineh3477 - so I'm not the only one, then! :)
I really think you need to watch A Fish Called Wanda. John Cleese Michael Palin Kevin Cline Jamie Lee Curtis. So funny!
Fun fact: one of the corporate yuppies in the opening "The Crimson Permanent Assurance" sketch was played, in his film debut, by Matt Frewer - who is better known as having gone on to play Max Headroom :)
There's also the film "Jabberwocky" which is worth seeing, written and directed by Terry Gilliam (the American at the 'death' dinner party) who also did the insurance pirates bit, and starring Michael Palin, set in medieval times.
All of Gilliams Films are worth watching. Most notably "Brazil","Twelve Monkeys" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" He gets outstanding perfomances from his casts. They disappear into their roles. DeNiro in Brazil is unrecognizable.
This is one I didn't really get when I was a kid enjoying Holy Grail and Life of Brian but I watched again as an adult and found it a lot of fun. :) And you seemed to enjoy it too so a good time was had by all. :D
Ah thank you so much for watching!
The only reason people have a problem with this movie is that they feel it is too different from all the other Python stuff. But then, that means there's a problem with people's _expectations,_ not with the film itself. If you go into a movie with preconceived notions, that's on you, not the movie.
Another victim of this was The Muppets, not to be confused with Jim Henson's original The Muppet Show. In The Muppets, they decided to do a "The Office" type show, but with muppets. The idea was actually about six years too late,_ not early,
It wasn't perfect, & mixing live humans in relationships with them didn't always work. (Why would anyone _think_ any human would be attracted to Fozzy Bear)? But where it worked, it _really_ worked, & having the muppets deal in real life relationships was handled brilliantly in most cases.
Too many people said "these aren't _MY_ Muppets." True that. But that's just it. They went in there with blinders on & chose _NOT_ to see what was, for what reason?
Preconceived notions are useless.
I saw Holy Grail when I was 12, but I didn’t see The Meaning of Life until I was 18. I think I saw them both at the perfect time. I still haven’t seen Life of Brian, and I don’t know why.
@@crescentfreshbret Kind of like not having the salmon mousse ...
I love all things Python. Funniest shows on the planet bar none. Thank you for showing these clips
Monty Python also had a movie called "And Now For Something Completely Different".
(1971). It's very funny.
All the fish would like to thank you for watching this movie. This is my favorite Monty Python movie. They took all the stops out, so as to offend everyone at one time or another. It did drag on a bit in places, such as the "Every Sperm is Sacred" song. Yeah, how were all those little kids singing that? Did you not see the skit towards the end with the naked women running in the sports helmets? I can't believe there's a censored version floating around the internet with that scene taken out. The Mr. Creosote throwing up in the restaurant and then blowing up was the gross part you were being warned about, but I found that funny ("It's just a wafer thin mint."). There is a lot of philosophy in it about the meaning of life (other than people need to wear more hats), so you'll need to watch it again, and maybe again. I must have watching it 40 or 50 times back in the 90s. I haven't been the same since.
I like this one more .
This stuck in my head more then the others two ,scene like :
The fat guy vomiting , The sperm song , arguing with death, The galaxy song is fantastic and many more .
I like dark comedy , breaking the taboo barrier , irony ,sarcasm...
There are still 2 other off brand movies done by some of the Monty Python group, such as "Jabberwoky", starring Michael Palin about a creature he must slay and "The Rutles", which is a parody of the Beatles.
There won't be any mixed reviews of Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl! (well except for maybe Eric singing the Lumberjack Song.) PLEASE watch that one!!!
She's gotta watch that just for the "Michelangelo" sketch.
Luv ya reaction vids. Gday from Perth Western Australia.
One of the Python crew, Terry Gilliam directed the movie Brazil - which is a pretty surreal movie, worth checking out.
"I think any movie that you laugh at and you find funny is obviously worth watching."
Excellent philosophy. Glad you enjoyed more than you disliked.
There is ANOTHER Monty Python Film you need to see and that is MONTY PYTHON LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL, where they are doing sketches, some you have seen, live on stage at the, you guessed it Hollywood Bowl.
:D
That's not really a cinematic though, it's like stand up DVDs are now. Still see it - Hollywood Bowl is great

unusual movie collection of skits, The first one of the old Accountants turning to Piracy to combat Corporate HQ is awesome !!
I thought it was brilliant!
For a long time this one was my favorite because it's so extreme, then Life Of Brian was my favorite because it's such a beautiful piece of satire, and these days Holy Grail is my favorite because of all of the way obliterates conventional story narrative and movie making. Still, they're all great!
Partly filmed in my city *Bradford,* just like a lot of *Monty Python's Flying Circus.*
*Every Sperm Is Sacred* is partly filmed at *East Riddlesden Hall* in *Keighley, Bradford* in the bit with the nuns, and is partly filmed at *Cartwright Hall, Lister Park* in *Manningham, Bradford* in the bit with the nurses and priests.
I used to walk through *Lister Park* and past *Cartwright Hall* every day when I was in 6th form at school.
*Cartwright Hall* has also been used in productions like *Look Up and Laugh* (1935), *Room at the Top* (1958), *Spanish Flu: The Forgotten Fallen* (2009), *DCI Banks* (2010-2016), *Utopia* (2013-2014), *Residue* (2015), *Lies We Tell* (2017), *Gold* (2018) and *The Duke* (2020).
*East Riddlesden Hall* has also been used a few times too, in productions like *Wuthering Heights* (1992), *Sharpe's Justice* (1997), *Lost in Austen* (2008), *Wuthering Heights* (2009), *Gunpowder* (2017), and *Anne Boleyn* (2021-present).
Graham Chapman (putting on the surgical gloves} was training to be a doctor when he joined Monty Python.
I laugh harder watching Meaning of Life than any of the other Monty Python films, helps to be Catholic and have a sense of humor.
You Should watch Monty Phyton at the Hollywood bowl. Its great!
One of the executives is Matt frewer before max headroom was his signature character
Matt Frewer was also an occasional character on Eureka, playing a slightly mad Aussie animal expert. His accent was terrible but fabulous.
I agree with those that say the next logical step would be A fish named Wanda.
But if you would like to see Michael Palin and Maggie Smith acting together you should try A Private Function.
LOVE your reactions... more!
How to Irritate People is very funny too. It’s something that was done before the Monty Python tv show and you can see a lot of where the humour would come from.
Also Ripping Yarns is very good - written and staring Michael Palin and Terry Jones

Please look up John Cleese giving the eulogy at Graham Chapman's funeral. It's brilliant.
You should give the documentary on Netflix a shot, "Monty Python's Almost the Truth: The Lawyer's Cut". It shows a lot of behind the scenes and stories about how things were made and such. For example, they didn't all really get along that well. They wrote in small groups and this helped them stay together longer.
I love the gentleman in the restaurant part of this film
IMHO, their best movie of all. The opening should have gotten an award by itself.
Mr. Creosote was gross but hilarious! The whole huge dance number about sacred sperm etc. was amazing as was the bit about how small we are.....so give them your liver! Or the machine that goes "Ping!"
Pure Dead Brilliant! 🤣
The restaurant scene is one of the funniet in movie history!
The Mr Creosote sketch is like Marmite.
You either love it or you hate it .. there is no middle ground here.
"I am death". I love that scene
By the way have you watched Fawlty Towers? I don't know if you've mentioned it or not but it's 12 episodes filled with so much pure classic Cleese. :P

A film that may not be your radar is "Brazil". Written and directed by Terry Gilliam
The every sperm is sacred song has been constantly in my head for 38 years.
John Cleese does a wonderful performance in Rat Race.
Clockwise is another when he does a great manic performance.
Ooh, I haven't heard of it
@@tzuyd It's a typical Cleese farce. Imagine Basil Fawlty as a headmaster who's obsessed with punctuality and order and how he reacts when things spin out of his control.
I've learned the hard way too; if you're going to be outdoors for a long time, wear a hat & sunscreen even if it's cloudy. UV passes through clouds and haze much more easily than visible light ;) cheers!
When Monty Python did their theatre reunion a few years ago, they did the Galaxy song with Stephen Hawking. You can find the video on their official channel here on UA-cam.
Now watch A Fish Called Wanda. It's got John Cleese and Michael Palin, it's like a semi-Python film.
It's kind of a fusion of British and American humor, that works really well. The 4 stars of A Fish Called Wanda, also did a 2nd film together called Fierce Creatures. It wasn't as good as Wanda, but it has some good moments.
Well done on watching this right through. This one was very much more hardcore than the others. It was made around the time they were forced to make a record due to a contractual obligation. They titled it, "The Contractual obligation Album", oddly enough? I'd love to see your reaction to all the Zuckerberg films. Airplane is their most well known (one of the best comedy films in history), but I think you'd howl at "Top Secret", which was Val Kilmers first ever movie acting role and has some of the silliest but clever moments ever.
"There is Sauerkraut in my Lederhosen!"
Contractual Obligation album 1980. Meaning Of Life 1983. Not the same time.
"Look at it, it's basically the closest thing to the sun" you're so fun !!!
As regards the Cleeseian catalog,
FAWLTY TOWERS may be at the pinnacle, certainly for his sustaining an outrageously flawed character through a dozen serial shows.
The supporting cast, Dawn Marie, is superb. It was let go far too early. Cleese in full attack mode.
You're going to love it.
Fawlty Towers or Watery Fowls or Flowery Twats is still the benchmark for all britcoms.

Fish Called Wanda is indeed a great movie. Another movie that has Cleese and Palin that I absolutely love is Time Bandits. Great movie.
Their first movie "And Now For Something Completely Different" is really funny too. (I saw it in Southend-on-Sea when I was a kid in '71.) I've been a fan ever since. Loved your reaction 👍👍
Girl:
1. You don't have an overly large forehead, it's beautifully proportional to the rest of your head;
2. Medieval to renaissance women used to shave off some of their hair to increase the area of their foreheads, as it was one of the sexiest physical features.
3. A larger rather than too small forehead is viewed attractive and indicative of intelligence, we subconsciously view people with these areas too small as more primitive.
4. You have a very attractive face, whether your forehead is visible or not - it's your pretty eyes and naturally warm friendly smile that make it so, and that's where attention goes.
"The meaning..." is less parodic and absurd, less loud and slapstick, but it is a great comedy in performing the crucial task of satire caricature and grotesque: being a sour commentary on society and humanity's worst traits. Happy you saw it.
makes me want to see it again
The Python's first movie was "And Now For Something Completely Different." It is a collection of the funniest sketches from the first series of Monty Python's Flying Circus, and was made for the US market to interest Americans in the TV series. As a result many PBS stations began carrying the show. It is an excellent introduction to the Python's particular style of absurdist sketches.
LOL Monty Python required a complete sense of humour for the insane and over the top. lol I KNEW you wouldn't get the Exploding Man skit. lolololol Hilarious!
Great reactions, your laughter is infectious haha!
You should give Monty Python's One down, five to go live a go. Their last collaboration together!
Who said don't bother with this?! Heathens! ...also so glad you were right on to the machine that goes "PING!" 🤣 My sister and I still reference that now!
Cleese has stated that he would have preferred they had a central character on a journey like Brian or Arthur in the previous movies, than this sketch format like they did on TV, even though the movie’s core theme is life itself…
Now you have completed the Monty Python movies, the next one you need to check out is A Fish Called Wanda. This comedy movie stars your favourites John Cleese and Michael Palin. As well as Hollywood actors Kevin Kline and Jamie Lee Curtis and some fine British character actors.
after they had filmed the mr cresote scene they had to clean up all the mess as quick as possible because there was a wedding next day in the same hall
Now you need to see the other two remaining Monty Python films: And Now For Something Completely Different (1971) and Monty Python - Live at the Hollywood Bowl (1982).
There is a 4th film, And Now For Something Completely Different. It is sketches from their tv series, Monty Python's Flying Circus. It has some really funny sketches in it!!

Anybody who tells you to skip ANY Python production has lost their bloody mind. It's not all gold, but it's full of treasures.
Had you not watched you would have missed so much.
This movie is a lot like their TV show. Loose thread through the whole thing. Just silly skits. Love it.
"The Crimson Permanent Assurance" is Terry Gilliam taking a small idea and going overboard to make his own movie. Almost. They just gave it it's own space and left him alone. Which is his preferred method of working. That's why it's separated with a credits sequence.
How about "Yellowbeard" next? It's very crude and many don't like it but I adore it.
The six Python's have done so many projects together and apart and every one is worth a watch. At least once.
Still hoping to see you do the whole TV series. I'm sure you would love it.

John Cleese did perhaps his best work in the television series Fawlty Towers. Try watching the pilot episode. You’ll be hooked.
Well DM, all you left of the Pythons is Live at the Hollywood Bowl. There are some hilarious scenes, it is quite different seeing them perform on stage rather than on TV or the movies. If you do watch it pretend that you are in the audience, it gives you a different perspective. 😄
You got to the coolest clip - Mr Creosote.
You should also watch Time Bandits! It's not a Monty Python movie per se, but a Terry Gilliam movie, but all the Monty Python team star in it and it is great fun! Stars John Cleese, Sean Connery and Shelley Duvall, etc.
My dad took my brother and I to this. We were quite young. My step mom walked out about a third of the way through. We didn't know why but as we age we understand why. But it doesn't mean it's not funny. Quite the opposite. Thanks for reacting. And your forehead looks fantastic.

Sure, _The Meaning Of Life_ gets all kinds of stick about being allegedly lesser quality than the other Python films, but honestly, I get the impression that the Pythons would have happily written every single sketch in the entirety of _Flying Circus_ in the same style, if only they'd possessed a similar movie-level budget and lack of TV-censorship.
I agree with you, this film is a little bit more uneven than their other films. If you like the Python humor style, you should check out "This is Spinal Tap," "A Fish Called Wanda" and "Time Bandits."
