  • Watch as these Grandparents from Tennessee watch “Dinner for One” - originally written by Lauri Wylie in the 1920s. The sketch was first performed live in the 1940s and was later adapted for television. We are watching the most famous version of the sketch, performed by Freddie Frinton and May Warden in 1963. The sketch has become a New Year’s Eve tradition in Germany and other parts of Europe. It is also known as “Der 90. Geburtstag” (The 90th Birthday).
Grandpa Ricky and Grandma Wanda are enjoying trying out new music and being introduced to new artists and movies, and exploring musical artists from all around the world.

Happy New Year from Germany! :)
I watched "Dinner for One" a million times! Okay, not a million times, but it's tradition to watch it in Germany. We even had this play at school (english class), learned about the background story and so on. I do know every line of this funny play! Btw.: "Dinner for One" runs multiple times on german television on eight different channels, so you can't miss it, when the tv is on. It runs over 30 times from 3 pm until 5 past midnight. In the evening like in a loop ... 5'35 on WDR, 5'40 on NDR, 5'55 on SWR and so on.

The play was performed in a small theater in London at the end of the 1950s. At some point, the head of Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) ended up in the play. He was so enthusiastic that he hired the play and the troupe for the station. But that was not so easy. Freddie Frinton didn't want to go to Germany. He hated it. It was shortly after the Second World War and the mood was not so good. But it worked out (money?). The play was then recorded at the NDR broadcasting center. As it had to be done very quickly, the station's employees were sent away as spectators. What luck, they had a lot of fun, as you can hear. Then the recording was shown for the first time on New Year's Eve on NDR television. And again the next few years. At some point, the other broadcasters realized that "Dinner for One" was a hit and showed it on New Year's Eve too. Over the years, more and more foreign broadcasters joined in. But the cradle of the show is NDR and it has been a cult show in northern Germany ever since. No New Year's Eve without "Dinner", no matter where I am in the world. ♥😎☯☮

I was introduced to this film a few years ago (I'm English and live in England) by some Danish friends. What is strange - and they hardly believed me - is that this film is virtually unknown in the UK and has never been part of our New Year's Eve tradition. Perhaps we've never watched it because we see in it too much of what us Brits are really like!!

    • @grandparentsreact

Dinner for one was produced by the entertainer and comedian Peter Frankenfeld for German television NDR. And now you can't think of New Year's Eve without it! It's part of it, like tinsel at Christmas. To the history. Miss Sophie always enjoyed celebrating her birthday with her 4 friends. But little by little they all died so that they all survived! Now, the butler took over the role.

Edit: The following statement was aimed at a different reaction. I am sorry for any disturbances that I might have created. The video the Grandparents reacted to is the NDR version.
This is the version of Swiss Television. It is more frugal than the German version recorded in 1961 by the German station NDR. E.g., there is no table cloth, the butler James doesn't ring the gong to get Miss Sophie into the dining hall, James' acting is reduced with the character of Admiral von Schneider.
The German version itself is also more funny -- if you have seen this show several times. They had a lady in the audience, NDR employees and their spouses, who laughed rather loudly, annoying the sound engineer. Nowadays just her laughter contributes so much to the show. If you have seen it several times, you know when she is going to laugh.
On the Internet archive there is a version of it available. I can't give you the link, UA-cam keeps deleting my comments.

Oh boy, I have never watched "Dinner For One" this early on New Years Eve! glad you enjoyed it, and given how many copyright edits you had to do, I guess that´s why the original play is so hard to find. If I remember correctly, I once found it here n UA-cam, but it was geoblocked. No problem to find the other, less good/popular version of it, for whatever reason...
Funny enough, this play is pretty much unknown outside of Germany, even in Great Britain, where Freddie Frinton was a popular actor, so I am always happy if it gets some attention from people outside of Germany!

Thank you for the suggestion, Ossborn. We truly enjoyed it. Unfortunately, it took many hours of constant edits to get past multiple video and music copyright restrictions. Even the little tune in the background at the beginning and end was going to cause it to be blocked in many regions. Of course, the full reaction is available on Patreon.

    Correction...
The sketch premiered on SVT in 1969. It was supposed to be shown that year, but was stopped because the board of SVT (Swedish state public service) thought the program contained too much alcohol. On March 3, 1969, however, they dared to show it. Since 1976, the sketch has aired every year on New Year's Eve, with the exception of 2004 when the program was canceled due to the Indian Ocean earthquake on December 26 of that year

I used to watch this every year after moving to Germany, it was simply tradition here. I haven’t seen it for a while now, so watching it again was really funny. My dad was from Manchester and hearing James’ Northern accent is always a reminder of him, he also always said “by gum”.
I got the impression, though, that grandad here maybe didn’t find it quite so funny, he hardly laughed. Even grandma didn’t laugh as much as I did, although I already knew it all off by heart.

Well, I've grown up hearing that Norway watches it around Christmas or Easter time, the UK wasn't aware for a minute that it became a German classic, but seemingly the information was a bit completely wrong and a lot of Western European countries have joined this as "31st / Sylvester tradition going on..!" for so long we only remember when we missed it bc we were sick or literally babies 😂 😂 In Germany there have been many re-interpretations of this and that including local dialects/old languages, but to be fair to them all "Nothing beats the original" and that's a tradition that will be going on as long as a screen is there to watch it on.

It can't be more german 🤣! If Freddy Frinton knew. Beeing a soldier during WW2, he - well- didn't liked Germany or the Germans. Then a famous german Entertainer - Peter Frankenfeld - saw their Sketch in Brighton. In the original on stage May Wardon's daughter was the partner of Frinton, but she became ill. The rest is history. Except for the recording of the Show infront of life audience. The broadcasting station NDR couldn't manage so fast to get a "regular" audience, so they incorporated employees. In the background you can hear a shrill female laughing, one of them. NDR found it anoying and nearly stopped the recording. She really was told to be more quiet! Today her laughing is a part of Dinner for One that no one wants to miss. So, HAPPY NEW YEAR from Germany 🍾🥂🍀 alex
