This was the real AMA. Professional factory teams, riders and bikes. Matt and Miguel were running similar lap time's to the non factory moto america riders now on 750s at some tracks and the 1000cc bikes don't arrive until 2004 I think
Ha, Scott Russell...Harley rider gets into a bar fight....typical night for an HD, lol. I wouldn't be surprised if the factory folks got him hammered and whole thing turned into a bar fight....what a riot...but dam, he got beat so bad he couldn't get his helmet on, fook......I'd like to see those next day photos....ouch.
Does anyone know why #17 Duhamel's Honda RC54 has a conventional Double-Sided swingarm? instead of the Factory OEM Single-sided Elf designed swingarm that was designed for fast wheel changes for Endurance Racing like Suzuka 24hr race? Seems the Single-sided swingarm would be an advantage for fast pit stops 🤔
Lighter and more rigid then the single sided swingarm. The other thing they found was that when a single arm flexes it actually turns the rear wheel alittle and steers the back of the bike. I have the cycle Canada article about this race from 1999 and Honda had made a few other changes to the bike and Miguel said when he started the race he knew he had a rocket. He was not able to walk and after the race he almost collapsed from fatigue. His leg had been shattered 10 months earlier and is an inch shorter then the other.
Took the wife to see this race on our honeymoon…

@@davevandervelde4799 Short leg... big bawlz. No problem.
I think they used the double to streamline and simplify the rear tire change during pit stops.
I don’t understand why these teams didn’t practice the pit stops to get ready for this race.
@@davidmann2988 - They practiced for sure BUT it was and still is such a one-off thingy that they don't put a crazy amount of effort
