Rob..you are without a doubt one of the best YT channels for striping away the complex theory behind the music. You present concepts it in a clear and concise manner, with great visuals. Very much enjoy learning from you.
I have been studying your videos for just a week and have learned so much already. They have also reinforced what I know about music theory. Thank you!
Steely Dan has some chords known as Mu Major and Mu Minor chords, special voicings of add9 chords. Another way to get "Instant Steely Dan" is in the bassline. Every time you have a chord, play the root at the beginning, and the root again one eighth note before the end. (Using QJamTracks's example, the bass player would play E ... E C ... C A ... A B ... B E over and over, where "..." means hold that note.)
Okay, so this video was very very useful in getting some ideas rolling around in my head, but one section was a little frustrating. The “Jazzyfy the progression” section was awesome but I unfortunately had some difficulty hearing all the extensions with the lead track over it. Beyond that, awesome video!
Okay yeah, this shit's fantastic. Not only is the teaching and content superb, but the production value is on point too. Nice work! Seriously underrated channel.
🤤 what a simple yet so powerful explanetion. You just blew up that chaos in my head and gave me so many new ideas and options to create and utilize in my playing / composing
this is a perfected way to see the difference in genres based on the same starting chords. Now I can see how jazz is advanced and complicated and simply to hard for me to remember and or play. I love jazz fusion live specialy the drums are cool. thanks for the great lesson. It showed me that I need to start from the beginning lol.
Your videos are the so visually clear and the way you move through the topic is so easy to follow. Thank you for the incredible content! A few videos in and this is already one of the best practical theory channels on UA-cam I've seen thus far!!
Just noticed a 'Midnight Gospel' poster you've got there, that's even more cool of you, sir, as i even thought) Thanks for sharing a crystal clear explanation and some really nice ideas!
Great channel and lessons, help us with harmony and guitar fretboard, understanding easily and explore new concepts and help guitarists. Thank you for you time and the videos and patience for learning. Salute from Spain
Superb lesson ❤ loved it Could you please also give lessons on Modal Interchange for making Progressive rock music and how to use and apply them 🙏🏻 love from India 🇮🇳
The power chord plus 9th is the voicing used in the Police's "Every Breath You Take." For a while after it became a hit, if you used that voicing, it sounded like you were ripping off from that song.
Love these lessons, thanks so much. But is the chord chart for Em9 correct? Wouldn't an Em9 consist of the notes E g b d and f#? The chart shows E g# and b#, which is an E augmented chord.
Great graphics! - and great approach - though, not sure of the logic of dropping the 3s ---- also, let's not forget the role the percussion played in shaping these feels
Aha moment! 9:00-9:10...this instantly leapt out to me as "Allan Holdsworth harmony"--he had his own idiosyncratic/self-invented "system", but quartal harmony was clearly a big part of it!
Very ingtersting, thanks a lot. In the quartal example, you are playing the 4 first chords (Eqrt, Cqrt, Aqrt, Bqrt) and before to be back to Eqrt you play a fifth one, like a bridge (by the way, you don't play it the second time). Could please tell us what is this "bridge" chord ? Thank you.
Hi Fred. Good question. It's a Bb quartal chord with an augmented 4th on the top. This chords creates 2 leading tones towards the Eqrt: Ab-G, Eb-E and and a common note D.
@@QJamTracks There doesn't seem to be any standardized notation for quartal chords. My notation for that bridge chord would be Bb(PPA), which says there's a Bb, a perfect 4th above that (Eb), a perfect 4th above THAT (Ab), and an augmented 4th above the Ab (D). Of course, it doesn't take inversions into account ...

Yes!!! Knowledge!! Power!! QJam!!
Great lesson … some of the Jazz and Fusion chords would be easier to hear if you didn’t start soloing over them so soon.
Fantastic channel, very inspirational, thank you!
