NOTE: I am not sure why OBS is like a slideshow at some points in the video. I am working on making it as smooth as it is in the game. I can't even get outside shots of the plane because it becomes a slide show. If anyone wants to throw me a tip on improving this, I will try everything! I am currently in the process of trying to get it fixed.
Pro-Tip: You should drop the gear when you're one dot below the GS (The GS diamond will be one dot above center), not established on the localizer. The goal is to be fully established (full gear and flaps) and Vref+10 at GS intercept.
Thank you so much for uploading this & for the clear explanation. I was so confused after watching other UA-cam videos on how to do this, but after watching your video it was easy to understand. Roll forward a few weeks later & it’s like second nature to me now.
As an armchair💺 FS enthusiast, this sounds like Chinese to me, with a lot of repetition needed to learn it. ...... After viewing it several times, I am getting it! ....EXCELLENT clear INSTRUCTION!
I used to hand fly the CJ4 when I first started, simply because I couldn't program the FMC. Now, a few months down the track and a lot of practice on Boeing airliners, I'm back on the Cessna. This was a great refresher course on the ILS approach and now I'm ready to give it another wirlie. One thing which is a real bummer and that is "No Auto Throttle" but it's just another thingy to get used to.
Some updated info (2024) based on my experience: If you manually switch from FMS1 to LOC1, depending on your transition vector, there's a high chance of your airplane going into ROLL mode and when that happens it will just fly in circles. Instead, you just hit the APPR button once you're past the vector and literally just wait, the FMS1 will automatically change to the LOC1, this usually happens when you're alligned with the runway.
@@captainhorn23 Latest patch 9/17 disabled the reverse thrusters since they do not exist on this aircraft. The patch did, however break the altitude select. As soon as you change the alt knob the plane descends/ascends on its own in response. Incorrect behavior.

Thanks so much for these kind words! I love interacting with everyone that comments. I try to rely to everyone which is possible at this point. I wish you become a big UA-camr soon, but I see what you mean. It would be difficult to reply to every single comment, but I would try my best. Join the Discord and I can interact with people a lot easier especially if I do get bigger. I don’t see a lot of you tubers reply to their comments and I think it’s very important that they do so, which is why I do lol.
Please help me. I have a problem whereby when I switch the FMS to LOC1 the plane continues to follow the FMS route when in NAV mode, rather than the runway frequency. It only follows it when I click APPR mode. Is this correct or am I doing something wrong? In FSX the plane would follow in NAV mode, you didn’t have to set it to APPR mode unless you wanted the glidescope.
I would like to start off by saying great video, what I am about to say is not a critique on you but rather the sim itself. I am not familiar with the simulator logic in this aircraft on fs2020, I know some things are weird and not properly modeled. But in real life you would not actually switch over to LOC using the nav button. If you arm the approach while still in FMS mode, the navigation source will automatically switch over to LOC. You do not want to switch beforehand because that will do nothing but confuse the autopilot as it will no longer be flying towards whatever IAF you were cleared to, and the nav source will just be the localizer and capturing it wherever it can. The exception to this of course is if you are on vectors (which to be fair you usually will be in the real world) then you can switch the nav source to the localizer, but in that case you should be on heading mode on the autopilot with the approach armed instead of nav mode. Granted I’m not too sure if the sim allows you to arm other modes like it does in real life. All my experience has been in a full motion class D hawker 900xp sim and I just recently finished that course and started flying this in FS2020 after my course ended to satisfy my craving for turbine operations. I have to say I am slightly disappointed in some of the functionality of the aircraft (normally when flying a SID I would select heading mode but have the NAV mode armed on standby as a lot of SIDS call for a climb on a specific heading before following the nav sources and this decreases pilots workload by automatically switching from heading to nav at the proper time, however this does not appear to be modeled in fs2020 or I am doing something wrong) the fmc is missing a lot of features and does not seem to function properly, for example after loading an approach while in the air, that approach did not appear in my legs page and I could not select direct to certain fixes. This is similar to my disappointment with the G1000 as it does not seem to function properly adding in tons of user waypoints and curved lines that should not exist and make flying approaches a nightmare imo. Overall I enjoyed the video and found it a very good tutorial for how to utilize this simplified version of an FMC and to teach someone who has no experience with FMC’s how to use it for approaches. My only complaint is with FS2020 itself and the somewhat baffling (in my opinion) omissions of functionality as someone who has operated with fully functioning fmc’s and autopilots in much older aircraft.
Thanks man!! I’m trying my best haha. No it’s not critical if you are just practicing, but in the real world, (and vatsim) yes it is critical to enter a departure runway, SID, and transition.
Nice recap of Proline 21 just for fun! Thanks! I will say a lot of company standards, mine included call for AP disengage at 200 AGL. Also I’m not sure the CJ4 has TRs. Great video though!
Thanks @CaptainHorn23 this looks like a really inciteful video however my CJ4 FNC (?) looks different to yours as if it's pre-programmed and some of the buttons that you use are showing NA. Is this due to some easy mode setting or something and if so do you know how I can disable it?
Awesome video. Thank you for being do detail in this as well as you other DJ4 video. Have you done an RNAV flight yet? I'm using an Xbox series x and I really want to "like" the DJ4 but am struggling with the FLC/manage speed. Also, it doesn't seem to do VNAV/RNAV. I have seen some other videos but they do not explain the "how's and why's" when they are doing something. Things "just happen" and I'm wondering "how in the world did they do that"? I will say I do love the A320 RNAV approaches and can handle the best of them. The 737 max on an Xbox doesn't cooperate so I'm thinking maybe the RNAV on the CJ4 might not work on the Xbox. Any thoughts? Thanks again .
I flew one of these last night for the first time but struggled with setting up the approach, your video clears things up, thank-you! Is there a way that you can manually tune the radio frequencies for nav's on this model?
I had the same problem. It seems it doesnt like departing and arriving at the same airport. If you take off from a different airport it works. So best to try a flight plan between two close by airports. Maybe something like london city to london heathrow.
Are you using a mod? ARR/DEP Index doesn't work like you say in my latest patch as of Feb 20, 2021. I enter KFCM for both DEP and ARR, and I don't get the option to Set my approach until AFTER I select a SID AND Departure runway... hit activate ... then I can go back to ARR/DEP index button and I can now see the ARR and select my ILS runway. Maybe this is a patch and they changed the FMC functions since you published your video. You do it in one step, but now it's 2 steps. Activate the Dep, and then activate the arrival.
This is a really helpful video. I'm having an issue with this plane where I'm being lined up about 10 feet or so to the right of the runway on my approach. I'm doing everything in the video. Hitting the NAV button so it follows the GPS, on approach switching to the Nav1 frequency, hitting the APPR button when centered with the glideslope. But it seems like every airport I fly into I'm not lined up in the center of the runway so if I don't take the AP off at the end and hand fly it in while turning it slightly to the left, I would land on the grass next to the runway. Does anyone have any tips or know why this is happening? FWIW I play on the Xbox. Thanks
You want to make sure it’s following the localizer not the gps when you’re on the approach. Make sure that the active nav mode on the PFD says LOC not FMS.
Really useful video for beginners.. when I have selected the departure and arrival airports and selected an IlS approach, when I click on Activate, the flight plan line on the map stays Yellow instead of purple. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
The navigation line didn't turn purple when I was setting up the ils during a free flight with out a destination. It only worked if is set it up with a destination from the main menu. Is there a way to set up another flight manually in the game after landing or do you have to restart the flight?

I landed at EGGW ILS 25 and it wasn't able to stay on the glide slope. GS anunciator was green, tried to keep my speed between 120 and 140 kt. Had the same problem on the TBM 930 yesterday in EDDN. Had to do it manually in the end both times 😒
That's what I thought, too. I was under the impression I had already been established on the GS and it wasn't trying too hard to stay there. Will try it a few more times and then hop on your Discord if the problem persists. Could be a while, though, have very little time atm. Thanks for the offer!
Thanks but For me, when I activate the route with the fmc, it is not purple in my gps, and the autopilot is not following the line... I have no Idea on how to fix that
Followed to setup procedure step by step. Did not get the purple line , instead got a yellow one that did not look like the same route. Not sure where i went wrong. Any help would be appreciated
A year later, maybe they changed something. I try to duplicate your instructions exactly. All well until I get to the point after which you selected ILS 36L. I select this and get the WELET transition just as in your video. But then you see ROUTE> on your MFC. I do not see ROUTE>. In that position I have CANCEL MOD>. And below that, highlighted is the work EXEC at very bottom of display. I thought this meant I should click EXEC button, so did that, but not the MFD shows different ILS approach beginning with CUNUK waypoint. I don't know where to go to get the route you created for the FMS.
Why is my auto pilot talking me on a whole different route then my ifs? Any help? It’s just doing like straight lines to the airport and the ap won’t pick up the purple lines
I was wondering what happened to that LOC button ...lol Ive been just hitting APP button while in FMC constantly and getting decent ILS landings. I guess this sim is more forgiving than the real thing.
This worked great until, well, the very first step. My FMC screens look completely different, and I can't figure any of it out. It says "NO FLIGHT PLAN" and I can't figure out a way to get to the screens you see. Oh well. I guess I need an even more basic tutorial.
What is your encoder set to on the recording settings?
It should be the Nvidia one. The newest one
Also the clouds don't help if there are a lot of particles on the air it will hit the FPS.
Not sure if you fixed your problem but I would try to record without gsync/freesync if you have it on!
I have one question, I've done everything you've done, my flight route is yellow instead of purple. Is there something I missed?
The most informative for a beginner that i've found so far. Thanks for this.

Probably a bug in the sim currently. An update comes out today that will hopefully fix some of the A/P bugs!
Can I set up the ILS in the world map
ok good, but how to have vor 2 arrow on PFD?
Followed to setup procedure step by step. Did not get the purple line , instead got a yellow one that did not look like the same route. Not sure where i went wrong. Any help would be appreciated
Same thing happened to me.
Very nice video! A small question: What is the speed at touchdown?
Thank you! I would say around 120 knots.
Why does your CJ4 look nothing like mine
I was just going to ask for a ifr Tutorial on the jet
Haha I don’t read minds I promise! 😂 I will be doing an ILS on the Cessna Logitude here soon as well!
why my citation cj4 MFS not same as yours? hehe
this aircraft does have any Auto throttle ?
I have no activate Navigraph cannot set anything saddy.
I meant FMC not MFC or FMS. Still learning all this. By the way, your video is excellent, very understandable.
A very good video! Have subscribed! How can i reverse the engines? I found nothing on the CJ4?
Thank you! The CJ4 actually has no reversers!
@@captainhorn23 Ah so i can search forever lol
hi, im sure that im doing something wrong but i did the exact same route as yours but it doesnt follow the circut any suggestions would be appreciated
I'm still trying to install MFS 2020
Why is my auto pilot talking me on a whole different route then my ifs? Any help? It’s just doing like straight lines to the airport and the ap won’t pick up the purple lines
Hey, did u resolve this issue? I am facing the same issue. 🥲 thanks
Why don’t I get the purple lines when I activate the route? I just have a yellow one

I was wondering what happened to that LOC button ...lol
Ive been just hitting APP button while in FMC constantly and getting decent ILS landings.
Thanks man
My nav color is not purple and it’s not following the route when I engage navigation….what am I doing wrong?
