    We have the 8.3 Cummins in buses over here in the UK. I love them as a driver as they seem to be free revving and give good power. Belting engines

    Those ISC 8.3s were popular in Busses and RVs also. Great engines.

    I work on lots of 8.3s but the natural gas version, heads are quite a bit different that's forsure!

    Oh snap this should be informative and clever at the same time. What are these worth? We bought an old Penske truck with a bad a bad transmission for storage and it has a Cummins 8.3 that sounds great.

    You know I've been using that trick for years with a mig. On races or gosh just about anything steel and that's stubborn. Just run a bead around the whole thing and let it cool. Love to see the tig torch busted out for this. Because I have a tig at home but do not have a mig. Can't believe I never seen or thought of it before. Skills man !👍

    I also use the Tig welder for odd jobs like that, removing broken or stuck bolts etc

    Great video. I have this same engine in my school bus conversion. 215k miles and still seems to be in good shape. Hope I don't have to do a rebuild any time soon. Or ever, optimally.

    I think it's interesting that this head is from Brazil and Ford made their inline 6 diesel engine there. Is there any connection with the old Ford plant and Cummins?

    You guys should consider using a plunger style valve keeper installer/remover tool - may be faster than using your pneumatic unit - especially on a head where all the valve faces are 'level' with the head surface.

    Very good!!! I noticed the freeze plugs were left in... I'm thinking they are stainless steel? I always replace standard carbon steel freeze plugs when work like this is being done, with brass plugs, on the head and the block... Excellent video fellas!!!!

    Hey Jim, why do you pull the valves out so far when checking the guides as the valve doesn't open up that much? And shouldn't you remove the valve stem seals to have a quick go to feel for the guides? I know you measure all the valves with bore gauge but why check it when stripping if you just going to use bore gauge?

    for lower fuel use a 7.5L Mercedes or Scania engine would have the same HP and torque

      I can't speak for the scania but the Mercedes isn't lasting nearly as long as the Cummins. At least that's my experience.

      Not on diesel. Can’t hit the top side of protrusion spec if you don’t know how much is coming off of the surface.

    Guides A bit worn past specs, i guess you could call it substantial wear as those live pilots heavily rely on a new guide to properly cut

    I love machining and Metal work. But I'm still always astounded that fossile fuels even made it after electric motors where invented. The work, wear and inefficiency on these engines is so high, they could only work out with a suptential amount of corruption and lobbying. Great Video though, you guys really know your stuff. 👍
