@@TIGHTENmetal interesting, was it the frequency range and tightness? Or something else entirely? I sort of had the same experience when I A/B ed the VII and found it was closer to my HG than DRG
@@J96Jacob The character of the bottom end and the mid hump are pretty 60-like. As the power sections go up they tend to get more naturally scooped with the extra power pushing the ass. I tend to prefer the 60s to the triode Simuls though, so that's a good thing.
Thanks for this!!!!!! my take after hearing it with headphones: - RI sounds good, it has the character and tone. No doubt about it. Mid hump in the 750-ish is there, but it might be also due to the fact that the GEQ faders are not the same of the OG. Or might be due to modern OT. I have a SRGX and HRGX, pentode gives you a bit more of hump, but in the mid to low mid section , not like the RI here, IMHO. - ....however when you turned on the OG and IIB I could instantly recognize that character that I'm used to, and that I can find in all my OGs, (SGX, HRGX, DGX): more raw, more sparkle in the upper mids, more aggression, more alive so to speak. so the RI sounds good and no doubt is great, but compared to the OG, IIB and III+ RI sounds like it has a blanket on the speaker. Same as comparing a polished Friedman vs an old untamed Marshall. Did you try to give the RI more presence? did it help?
Have you tried a Runt 50? Other than his Plex50, I think that the Runt is the most raw and unpolished marshall Dave makes. I liked it better than the BE50 LOL. Like just gimme the runt and a drive pedal and I'm good.
In hindsight I should have ramped up the presence on the RI but I forgot. That may have helped. Despite the mid hump, which isn't that bad compared to a JP, the RI to me doesn't have the same "blanket" thing as most IIIs (not this one) do. It was still super pleasing & easy on the ears, clear with no fatigue.
Maybe the best comparison so far. To me the the RI doesn't sound as full - warm and ballsy as the rest of the amps, which sound amazing by the way... I know that the video might not do justice but again in my opinion it's easy to tell which one is the RI. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd go with the OG - IIB. The green stripe would probably make the perfect thrash amp in my book
Thanks From Japan. I always refer to your videos. I also bought the original in September this year, so I wanted to hear the difference between the reissue and the original. The reissue has a bit of a hard sound. I play the IIC + original with Marshall 1960B 4 x G12-65, so I prefer a softer sound with less treble.
That III+ just dominates here IMO. Just pissed and well balanced with bite. There’s a vintage flavor in the mids with the IIC+ RI which is neither good or bad - personal preference. I’d still take the III+ over the RI or the OG.
Great video, Jeremy! I've noticed that the III was darker than the IIC+ OG. Is it because of the III's nature that it has more low mids and low ends than the IIC+ such that they are more pronounced, or is it because of the cab's position towards the mics? Are the amps set to the same settings or to match the tone? ETA: correction for OG instead of RI.
That's just how they were dialed, not really in reality. The III is a little more dry than the II, but still within the World of Marks. The knobs were set the same at first then I made some tweaks for the room, but I was going more for "killer tone" than "make them as close as possible".
@@TIGHTENmetal I see. Thanks. Sorry, just for my understanding, which one was a little more dry than the other again? You mentioned the III for both cases.
I‘ve never had iic+ but on my thought, according to my ears, the RI should be tweaked with higher Gain and Presence than OG. Also maybe scooping 750 slider can make them sound more similar. Just my opinion. Nice amp though. I should buy one later.
And the iic+ on this video, is it HRG? Sounds awesome! By the way, what's the closest amp to iic+ you think? Mark iii red, JP2C, Mark iic+ reissue, Mesa preamps?
My favorite was the 2b coli and have to agree best rythm amp made by mesa , the reissue sounds good but i would take a iii or any og over it the transformers and cronstruction are just better...
Fantastic job with the comparison. For my perspective, there’s a distinct mid tone shift with reissue what seems to be very common among recent audio clips. I own a seven and a JP do you think it’s overly redundant to add the re issue ?
First blush as an OG II/III guy, I like the RI WAY more than the JP and the VII. I will give the JP a nod for live work, and I'll give the VII the nod for bedroom work, but I'd take the RI any day for what I'm looking for.
This sounds like the reissue had less volume hitting the power amp than the og im sure they would be closer with more adjusting the reissue. It just sounds quiet and has that weak feeling like when either my lead master or master 1 is down. Or the reissue has less 80hz at the same slider position and needs to be higher to match maybe. Also maybe needs more presence to match og.
I am assuming that each amp is going through the cab that it is sitting on. Given that the cabs are all oriented slightly differently, and placed at slightly different spots in the room, the camera mic will pick up different reflections and the source. The OG IIC+ still sounds mean and aggressive. I don´t think the RI can really compete in that regard. Not to mention the fact that they discourage high gain use because of the whole microphonics issue. How can OG pull off high gain with 40 year old technology, while reissue is struggling this bad, is beyond me.
Does the RI have any of the iic+ bounce? ….im so worried that the IiC RI will be stiff and synthetic…. ….my III, and IV feel great. My V is lifeless, except for the rhythm channel; which is full of the great feels and bounce while chugging. I doubt I will be able to play test the RI, so I’m running blind.
My blue stripe III has the mojo over my , IV, V and Triaxis. I would love to try the OG as I can’t imagine a better mark amp then the III blue stripe. Triaxis has some of its own magic but really compressed and not open like the 3.
IMO the IIIs are a little more dry & aggressive, while still being organic & 3D. I like them for their own reasons. I think the RI will still nail the IIC+ sound & feel where a III doesn't.
first! hate to say it ,but the OG is still the champ ,iii+ close second(i too dont care for the boxy mids even though yes they are better in a band setup im sure)
Honestly unless you were A/Bing I don't think you would notice the extra mids in the RI. It's there, but not as prominent as with the JP2C where they're really hard to get away from. (Which I also have a seperate vid covering this.)
Yeah, I have some opinions here. For my 7 string in std tuning, it kills with all of them except the IIB- and I LOVE my IIB. For my 6 string that's downtuned to D std. I'd say it works equally well with all of them, however the modern Marks I do think have the advantage as tunings go down. With the vintage marks I do think they sound BEST in E or Eb.
Why does the reissue sound so muffled compared to the OG ? Plus it has no sizzle. Sounds dead lol The OG is brighter with that sizzle ... plus big low end
The guitar player is great, but for a more honest test it would be nice to put microphones close to the cab as you always do. Anyway good job!
