I find it amazing how much more modern and robust the Electrolux upright series were at the time compared to the plastic Hoover Junior and the Hoover Turbopower. Appears much more expensive to manufacture than the above, given how much more popular Hoover uprights were than the Electrolux uprights it makes me wonder how Electrolux could afford it.
I wouldn't have thought Electrolux uprights were less popular than Hoover, given that they were absolutely everywhere back in their hey-day (I always thought they must have held an equal share to Hoover, but it's only my gut feeling), but I do agree that the cost of making the 500 series Electrolux cleaners must have been high. After all, the main body of the cleaner has numerous ducts & chambers within it - I don't think I've seen any other vacuum cleaner with so many mouldings like it.
Furthermore, for many years the tool kit was always rather fancy, with a floor tool being included as standard right up until 502 and 506 went off sale. Granted at some point the tool on the 502 was changed from the "posh" turn-over tool to the "cheap" one, but never the less it still had one.
It's funny too how it was only on the very late production runs that the whistle-stop bag-full indicator was capped-off (it must have taken quite a bit of sub-assembly to make the whistle, and I never heard of anyone who actually valued the feature), likewise the top section with the handle had a weak spot on it, yet the improved moulding with additional supports on the back of the handle did not appear until the 502S was almost finished, and long after the 550 and 560 had started - this would have been a good ten years since the original cleaner first went on sale. It makes me wonder how much of a "problem" to Electrolux the handle breakage had truly been.
In terms of robustness, Hoover definitely had plenty of "built-in obsolescence" in their vacuum cleaners, not so much to stop the cleaner working altogether as much as to gradually make it look shabby - cord hooks being a perfect example of this.
While I appreciate the idea behind their "pip & clip" (later "pip & ring") system to attach the tools to the tubes was to keep them from falling off while loose enough to remove, it too provided so much opportunity for the use of plastic parts & pressure points on the aluminium so that gradual failure would occur, making the cleaner look / feel tatty or becoming worn-out. Although Electrolux cleaners had their issues, it was my perception that upright or cylinder, they never looked anywhere near as worn-out as Hoover cleaners did. Well used, yes, but not worn-out.
Of course, once the 600 series went into production, things were never quite the same on the quality front.
Nice simple upright. Wonder if there was a deluxe version with a headlight? It begs for a nice big headlight…😁
Interesting that it has no front wheels…that must make it harder to push.
@@briant5378 it does, and the fact that the instructions say it can be pushed over hard floors baffles me
It doesn't seem five minutes since you couldn't give one of the cleaners away for love nor money. Like the Hoover Junior (albeit in various models), the 170 was EVERYWHERE at one point. I know it had an incredibly long production run of about 10 years, during which time practically nothing was ever altered in terms of the design (the hose in the tool kit possibly did), hence why they were a common sight.
I’ve sold this for £30 delivered. It’s going to a young vacuum fan who has watched this video several times and is planning on making his own unboxing video when he receives it, so it’s going to a good home.
You need more vacuums, perhaps some bissell powerforce vacuums
They're not sold in the UK.
Why upload on Sunday?
I think it’s up to me the time and day I decided to upload a video. This is an extra video to tell my viewers that I will be selling some of my collection.
