Good to see you are filming more technical things on this channel. Doing repairs and opening up vacuums really is one of the most enjoyable parts (when plastic bits dont break lol)
These cleaners still pop up on facebook and ebay quite a bit, so hopefully you'll get it sorted / get a new one for your collection. These cleaners came to market in the autumn of 1991 and were on sale for anything between £79.99 and £99.99 (typical selling point being £79.99), with or without tools, depending on the retailer. By Easter of 1995 they were being discontinued and could be found for £49.99, which was an absolute bargain for such a high quality and powerful cleaner. What I remember most about cleaners of that time was that good quality basic uprights were in huge demand, thanks to the poor build quality of many all-singing all-dancing expensive uprights with built-in tools that had failed to pass the test of time. A bit like now with the Numatic Henry being so popular when consumers have spent a small fortune on some bagless thing which disappointed them.
Roger as much as I sympathize with you getting a machine that’s in excellent physical shape but rough mechanical shape, at the age of these machines I’d personally assume that they all need their bearings greased up and to be given a tune up under the hood. And personally being a minor collector, these issues are honestly some of the simplest to fix, it’s hard to make a machine that’s been banged around look like new, but it’s easy to make a worn out motor run like new. I’d rather have something like this where all you need is grease and a bit of time versus the other way.
My gran had this exact machine in the 90s by the mid 2000s it sounded exactly like yours, despite it having bigger wheels it was always really hard to push on her sculpted nylon carpets.
Hi I’m assuming the excessive amount of fluff and debris around the motor was due to a gaping hole in the suction tube. If there is poor suction fluff will build up instead of being sucked into the bag. Plus any dirt or fluff being picked up by the brush roll is going up that suction tube and out into the casing.
Usually when this happens it's because either the hood of the motor has worked loose and therefore suction is escaping around the base of the machine, or when the plastic rings to the right of the dust box (as viewed from the front) has worn away/snapped off, again allowing direct access of air to the motor & fans. This said, both issues were much less a problem on later cleaners like this, as Electrolux had made the build quality better as time progressed. I am surprised to see one this late in such a condition.
This was another standard issue in forces households. We had the burgundy colour one in our quarter when we moved to Cyprus! Then the white one in the uk after a 550 broke, they used to just replace them in those days !
Hello. I was wondering if the 502 has a similar floorhead design to the one on this Turbo 2? Because I am planning on trying to fix the split hose on the 502. Is it easy to get spares for the 502 by now? Thank you.
Were there ever any differences between successive 500 series Electrolux machines? There always seemed to be a base model and electronic/power model, but they essentially seemed the same model just with different colours and slightly sleeker bodies with the new wide pedal design? My mother had a 502S, we updated to your new version but it seemed mechanically identical…
The flip down handle, drop in bag and bayonet fit plug-in suction hose was a much more user friendly design than Turbopowers of the day. I always had a soft spot for Turbopowers though, probably because I was bored of my mother’s Electrolux habit and coveted something different!
We had one. It lost all it's suction. The Electrolux engineer said it was a motor problem but because the motor is a sealed unit it could not be repaired.
I bet the fancase and fans are also full of compacted fluff. I had a E502 like that and you have to knock the fancase cover off and clean out the fans and ducting between the fans. The part you cleaned is only one part of the ducting, the rest is only accessible when the fancase is removed, and even then, because the fans cant be removed, it is very difficult to clean some more inaccessible parts of the ducting under the inner fan. Ideally it needs the complete motor replacing, but being so old now, motors would not exactly be readily available. Bad seller, and I would leave negative feedback as the motor was in such poor condition and potentially a fire hazard with it being choked with fluff like that.
I had one of those, bought it in 1990, and replaced it a couple of years ago with my Hoover model I've got now, so 31 years of good service. I'd have given it to you for free. They really shouldn't be allowed to sell things in that condition, it certainly isn't fit for purpose. It could have gone on fire. There's a technique for changing the belt, you hook the base plate onto the foot pedal.
That’s a shame it sounds like the delorean getting to 88mph when powering up/down 🤦♂️ I hope you can complain to the seller/website in question, the carbon brushes sometimes I’ve bought Hoover ones and filed them to size to fit other machines, of course wear respiratory protective face cover if you do that.

What a superb piece of packaging. Had me baffled ! 😁
I’m hoping for more repairs like this from you!

“….of course, she would have done her own vacuuming…”. 😂😂😂
It was so full of fluff and dirt! How satisfying to watch it being vacuumed up but it’s not on that the seller wasn’t more….accurate in the listing.

The 502 is similar to this model and shares some common parts. You can still get some spares for the 502. Ebay is your best bet.
Thanks a bunch. :)
I have one of these machines up for grabs! it’s in relatively good condition if you need it for spares!:)

Ah yea, power switch moved to body from handle. That’s it though…
The air freshener was branded Green Leaf i think…

My first hoover. Bought it 1994 when I bought my first flat.
Hopefully we can see what is done to it?!
You never get any luck with these 500s!
Got one of these badboys for £4.99 in a charity shop recently
