Here I'm playing the new Jeff Loomis signature model from Schecter Guitar Research, the CYGNUS JLX-1 FR!
Absolutely amazing guitar, it's gorgeous, the fit & finish is perfect. And it sounds and plays soooo nice! Definitely my new favorite of all my guitars, and will likely be my main guitar for both recording and live use from now on!
The new Seymour Duncan Loomis Blackouts are stunning as well. I've always been a passive pickup guy primarily, but I'm super impressed with these pickups! They're VERY high output (so be prepared to turn the amp gain down a couple notches), but still are very clear and articulate sounding. And as you can hear, they clean up very nicely as well!
Gear used:
Schecter Cygnus JLX-1 FR into a Kemper Profiling Amp. The Kemper profile is one I made of my old Peavey RockMaster preamp going into an EL34 power amp, then into a Marshall 1960A cabinet loaded with Eminence CV-75 speakers, and mic'd with a Shure SM57.
Thanks for watching! As always, please like, subscribe, leave any questions or comments, and share the video around if you enjoyed it!
Cheers!

Just want to say that your playing is sick. Truly inspiring. I am only about a year into my guitar playing but I am driven by an unstoppable force to progress due to my love of the music and the feeling I get from playing it as I improve.. Thanks for the inspiration man.. Both you and Keith merrow were what pushed me over the top to want to play starting out at an older age.....I love the riffs you come up with the way you have an awesome ability to change direction.....sick nothing more to say then that....
+esar71aw Thank you man, I really appreciate that! I'm glad you're playing, and enjoying yourself... that's the most important part of it! Keep that feeling, and you'll keep improving! I don't know where you are in your playing, but if I may offer just a tiny bit of advice... Don't underestimate the importance of vibrato! It may seem like a trivial thing, but vibrato can make an average player sound great, or a great player sound average!
Best of luck dude!
+Gord Olson yeah ive been working on all that. I agree its really important to have good vibrato and to use it in the rite way. Thanks for the tip and for taking the time to write back.. Keep killin it...
Sick playing, I wish you would release more videos!
+LegendaryK4 Thanks, and so do I! ;) I'm trying to!
That was an awesome song dude. Very impressive whammy work, very good intonation with it.
Ivory Raven Thank you!
Absolutely kickass rhythm and lead playing!
Thanks man!
yeahhh Gord comeback!!
still sick and brutal!!!
These are the type of reviews I appreciate not much talking just pure play through for sonic analysis and sonic observation by ear, keep up the good work✊🏽🤘🏽
Great Demo! Awesome looking guitar, that lead work put it to use
Really awesome Mr. Olson!!!
Great playing as always
This videos is so sick!! Waiting for my blackouts to come in the mail right now!!
insane riffs, insane leads, insane guitar
Awesome Gord! That was extremely good \m/
When I heard the clean tones in the JL sig pickups I didn't like them too much, but in this video I think they sound better. However, this guitar is made for play KILLER METAL! Love the guitar and love the riffage man! :) Keep rocking, bro
Hey, wanted to once again thank you for you insight on this model of Schecter. Really appreciate it more than words will ever convey!!!.
I also wanted to ask; "Why the HELL don't you have more stuff on UA-cam?!". You're a vicious, sharp, aggressive player with soul!!!. AND, you rock when it comes to answering/explaining, stuff!!!.
One last thing; When are YOU going to get a "Signature" guitar?. Cause I definitely wanna see what you'd come up with!!!. HELL, I'd probably buy it without seeing it!!!. lol
Thanks again!!!.
No trouble man! Glad if I can help out at all!
To the question of putting out more material... I really wish I could! I have a lot of stuff going on in my personal life these days, and it unfortunately means that I don't have as much time as I'd like to put into producing music and video. I'm honored that you want to hear more from me though! I do have some new content coming up real soon!
And as to the Schecter sig... haha I'm not sure if that will ever happen, but I actually do already have one mocked up, just in case. The guys at Schecter have seen it and liked it, but I'm think I'm probably not high profile enough to get a sig model. Yet, at least. ;)
Thanks for the support dude! It's much appreciated!!
GREAT SONG AND PLAYING!
Well... that's a brutal beauty master piece of music 👌😌👌
Thanks a lot! Cheers!
soo much morbid angel here, i love it!!
+givemeajackson Interesting that you say that... MA was/is a huge influence for me, but I wouldn't have thought that this sounded like them!
+Gord Olson just the vibe from the first riff.
Gnarly blister on your thumb man.
+Joseph Rock lol Yeah, not a blister, it's actually a whole bunch of scar tissue. Sometimes it gets kind of red and inflamed looking.
I really don't say this often, but that's some nice phrasing you've got there!
Monolith Preacher Thanks!
I used to play that A minor thing at the end all the time, because it sounds cool... You know Cheech and Chong.... Chong played that A minor thing too lol! \m/
I did that w my Schecter V, bye bye 81/89 hello zebra striped Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz. Much preferred personally. Actives for me just sound.... Dull... sterile... Dark... love the tones of passives.
Nice! That's a great set too! I agree about actives. Most are way too compressed sounding for me. That's where that sterility comes from I think.
dayum, you're good!
Hey Man. Big fan. Amazing playing and composition. Where can i download this song and other songs from your guitar reviews.
i want a loomis signature in kelly/explorer form :(
Sick!
That part 1:43 to 2:03 melted my brain.
Hey man, first of all AWESOME JOB here, really liked it. I am stuck trying to chose my first 7-string guitar. I can`t decied bewteen these JEFF LOOMIS SIG, the KM7 and the Hellraiser C-7 (EMG 707). I saw you comment below here saying they are all good guitars, but could you give a little bit more tips about how each one sounds, how are the cleans, the warmth and stuff like that? I am looking for a sound bewteen an OPETH and KATATONIA, with dark melodies and stuff!
Thank you man!
It's kind of a tough call... The KM guitars have the bridge pickup a little farther back towards the bridge than normal, and that gives a little bit brighter sound. So I would say the JL series has an advantage for warmer tones over the KM, but the JL's have really high output active pickups, which I always find to be a little sterile and compressed sounding. The maple neck brightens it up a tab though too. I don't think either one has a real advantage in tone... The KM is a fixed bridge, so it has a little more sustain than the JL, but the JL has the Floyd Rose, which I think allows for more expression, and interesting sounds... Too hard to pick!
Honestly, you can get great tones for that style out of any of those guitars, they all have great materials and pickups, so it's really more of a choice between what you think looks or might feel better for you.
For me, I love having a Floyd Rose, but I prefer passive pickups, so I got one of the KM7-FRS guitars, which I love... but it's bright green, and I wish it was a different color, to be honest. If I had to pick just one guitar... I would go with a JL, and replace the pickups with passives. That would give me the best combination of looks and hardware that I need. All three are great instruments that will give you the tones you want, so in this case I'd say to just go with what looks best to you.
Wow, the best comment on a question ever, TYVM my friend! The looks on JL is really INSANE, prolly the most beautiful guitar i've ever seen. I wish the KM7 TRANS BLACK SATIN come with a nice inlay, like those crosses on JL or Hellraiser one. Then it would be BEAST too.
The Gods!!!!!!
thats something would play
fucking beautiful guitar, i must have one lol i've grown partial to the gus g signature ltd but this is on another level
Bro...that's insane...
Bro... thanks!
Hello dude, amazing playing, I know that this is an old video but I'd like to know what's been your experience with the Floyd rose 1500?? I own a BC Rich but it comes with the German made original, and I can't find any info about that bridge (durability, tuning stability) , so would like to read your opinion, thank you
I've had nothing but great experience with the 1500! I have a few guitars with the 1500, and a few with Original Floyd's, and honestly the 1500 is a bit nicer to use because of the push-in bar. It's easier to get in an out, and stays in place better than the OFR screw in bar.
Haven't had any issues with tuning or durability with the 1500 either. Great bar as far as I'm concerned!
For a split second I thought Jeff was playing!
Got to Subscribe.....AWESOME SOLOING.....
Where can I get your profiles?
awesome demo Gord! How do you like the pickups?
Great song and great playing! Btw, I was wondering, what did you use to create your intro? It looks super cool!
Thanks man! I used After Effects to create that intro.
@@GordOlson Awesome man. Cheers!
the first part of the lead remind me of the solos from megadeth's dystopia album
Where I can buy this guitar?? I can't find it anywhere!!!
Unfortunately it is no longer made by Schecter, since Loomis has gone to Jackson guitars. Your only hope is to find one used. It's an amazing guitar though, so keep looking!
Hey Gord, do you still play this guitar to this day?
I have the same pickups in my ESP and I'm curious If its normal that the finish wears down from this matte chrome to a more polished silver chrome?
Do you have the same cosmetic problem?
TheRisingofSeph Yes I still play this one, it's actually one of my favorite guitars ever! I changed out the pickups a while back though, but yes I had the same thing happening with the Loomis pickups. Didn't even take that long to start showing wear.
Gotta ask, and I'll probably keep askin' till I get a response from someone. lol
Is it a comfortable shape compared to a standard shaped guitar?.
It depends on what you like, or what you're used to maybe... But personally, I love it! Standing up, you'll find that it's a little bit head-heavy compared to regular strat types. But it doesn't bother me at all, personally. And sitting down, I'd say it's even more comfortable than a standard strat / super strat. You can sit it on either of your thighs like regular guitars, but you can also wedge it between your legs like a V. Of course you can play a regular shape in a classical position like that too, but a V (and this guitar) feels great like that. IMHO, of course.
Gord Olson I REALLY appreciate you taking the time to answer my question!!!. It means alot to an old guitar player such as myself. You're an honorable man. Thank you.
I call that neck heavy....how little is little?....it really makes or breaks a sale for me
+NORTHERN BORDR MUSIC (Scotty Rockets) Well, no more than any other V or Star shaped guitar that has a strap pin up near the heel of the neck. So I'd say that if you're worried about it, then yes, it will bother you. You have to be used to it, or unfazed by it to play this guitar.
I know Loomis played live at wacken I saw clips... Never took it off it seemed... How do you hold it? Especially solos tapping etc?
How is the cutaway?? Is it deep enough? Is there enough room between the neck and the horn? That is literally the only thing stopping me from buying one.
I have a really short pinky, which means I have to angle my hand and wrist further down and towards the back of the guitar to use my pinky for a lot of stuff... so the cutaway is always a concern for me as well. I was a little worried about this guitar before I got it, but I'm happy to say that I don't have any issues with the cutaway and upper fret access. Feels good to me!
+Gord Olson ... I'm going to have to ask you to measure your pinky, from the webbing, please...
+xKRYSTALxDRAGONx lol So am I to understand that you similarly afflicted? From the webbing to tip it's 2 1/8". Pretty much halfway between the last two finger joints on my ring finger. It sucks! Makes big sweeps and stretches way harder!
+Gord Olson I would say I am similarly afflicted here man. It's a bummer, I'd love to own one but that's such a massive downside for me. I have a Charvel DST-1, the star shape, and it doesn't get much play time because it's just not comfortable up there. Thank you for your help man! Stellar playing. You've earned another sub!
+xKRYSTALxDRAGONx Well, I actually really love this guitar, if that helps at all. I do band rehearsals twice a week and play live with it as well, and it's great for me. I know Jeff actually based this shape off of the Charvel star, but there's some extra material notched out, and the deep beveling helps too. But you might want to try to get a guitar store to get one in so you could try it first. Good luck, and thanks for the sub!
Sick playing, I find too many signature guitars overpriced though.
What would you say is the best Schecter guitar out right now?
Too hard to say! I would say that it's maybe my favorite Schecter right now, but I still love my KM guitars too. I wouldn't say that one is better than the other, because all these new Schecters are incredibly nice guitars!
None of them unless you buy Schecter USA built. The cheap built Asian Market ones are junk! The bodies are sound, well unless you detract the 3 skirt cut neck, remove it & replace it with a quality solid maple neck from Warmoth. For the price the are asking, with exception of the pickups, it is not worth the money. £1100 on the internet UK. Not worth it, for Floyd Rose Copy, & Grover Copy tuners. Cheap Asian Volume/Tone pots, & input jack.
You want the facts? These are the facts!
+Steve Bettcher +Steve Bettcher You're acting like you're some kind of expert. But those are not facts. I have either owned or spent significant time with Prestige Ibanez, USA Jacksons, EBMM, ESP, and Mayones guitars. I have several Schecter guitars in my possession, and the NEWER Schecters, since either 2014 or 2015 (not sure when the change happened exactly) can hang with ANY other guitar I've played, in terms of fit & finish and playability. They have really stepped up their QC. I would even say the opposite, that you in fact get a lot of guitar for what they are charging. I will admit that their electronics are pretty unreliable though, I usually have to replace the volume pot within a month or two. But considering the rest of the specs on their higher end Korean guitars, nice woods, pickups, and hardware (real Floyd, real Grover & Hipshot tuners), they are an incredibly good guitar! The "Asian guitars are junk" mentality is no longer a certainty. And that's a fact.
Gord Olson if that were true? They could or can compete with Gibson USA without a glance or question! They cannot! I took lessons for 10 years from the same guitar teacher. I learned guitar building, & leuther from a man that, by the time I met him had done it for 30+ years of his life. The quality is in the build & all the work done to the guitar before it is a finished product! So you think an Asian build can hang & hold up to the top quality build of Made in the USA??? Gord, you are kidding yourself!! Typically a guitar player is rarely if ever much more than that, a player! Minor tinkering here & there, meehh, no big deal. Further, to build a guitar, from block stock, & breath life into it, takes skill, time, & craftsmanship that no Asian factory can possibly match! Yes, they are facts, you simply do not like the truth nor agree! So what! You spent significant time with builders. Never built one yourself, so your opinion is biased! That's the truth!
I think they can compete! Okay, you're a luthier, so what does that mean? You know what to look for when comparing guitars, much more than the average player. You're right, most players are not schooled in the finer points of luthiery. And no, I really don't mean to say that there aren't any differences between a good Korean build vs a hand built USA custom. Of course there are differences. I also own two USA custom builds from BRJ (from before the Black Friday fiasco) and they are both beautiful looking and playing guitars. They do have a life to them, no doubt. Same with both the Mayones guitars I've played, they look amazing, the finishes are incredible. But I'm just telling you my experiences as a player. Asian builds have come a long way, and these new Schecters play just as nice as any other guitar I've played. Honestly. And for me, I would have a real hard time shelling out $3k or more for another USA custom when I know that mostly all I'm getting is looks and bragging rights. As a player, I care more about playability, and I know how to set up a guitar and can handle any necessary electronic fixes or upgrades, so I would rather get a production KM7 or Cygnus than a USA build. Truly, the average player will not fully appreciate the differences between the two the way you would.
What amp are you using
Also, sick playing
Thanks man! It was a Kemper Profiler in this video. I created the profile from my old Peavey RockMaster tube preamp.
@@GordOlson thanks man
Call of ktulu influence at the end?
NotASupraOrGtrFanboy It's possible! Never thought about it, but maybe...
Is the back of the neck gloss?
Beowaffle42 It's painted, but it's not gloss. Satin finish on the back of the neck. Feels real nice.
1:44 no comment !!!!!!!!! :D
Are you rly doing that?
Not sure what part you're talking about, but yes, I really played everything you hear. :)
+Gord Olson i think it switched videos when I wasn't looking. Someone was playing Nickleback on a JL-6. Lol. Like I said before, your playing and this song are fantastic haha. Rock on man. This thing sounds fantastic, thinking on picking up the JL-6 in black myself. How ya like those "new" EMG's?
+Ivory Raven oh sorry forgot this model went to the SD's. Noob lol.
Nickelback? Okay, that's definitely not me! ;)
Yeah the new SD Loomis set, it's a killer sounding set, but I just can never fully get into active pickups for some reason. They're SUPER hot, and I prefer a little less output and more dynamics. So I converted this guitar to passives. Black Winter set! Perfect guitar for me now! \m/
Thanks for writing dude!
:O
