I made a film once where I wanted a shot where the camera pushed in on me, but I was by myself, so I put the camera on a skateboard, put the skateboard on a slightly inclined surface on top of some stacked boxes, stuck a knife under the front wheel to keep it in place, and got in position. Then I yanked the knife out with a string and let it roll until it hit some wadded-up clothes at the end of the incline. The shot made it in. Cost nothing, too. Sometimes having zilch to work with trains your problem-solving skills like nothing else.
Love the creativity. Using a skateboard as a dolly is a classic move. Great thinking!

Hey man saw your videos and you got some potential dude. One thing though, I saw that your comments were turned off and on one video I noticed that you were asking for feedback. I think they're turned off because you were honest with your age when you made your UA-cam account. Whenever you can, make sure you change that. It'll be beneficial to you in the long run.
I only have a papaya and a banana. Can I still make a short film? The story is simple. One day I ate the papaya, forgot about the banana and it rotted and got really gnarly so I threw it away... So really when I say I have a papaya and a banana, I really mean I have nothing.

So I’ve recently shot a few commercials for local businesses and a few product commercials and I want to attempt to do a short film on my own, that’s how I found this video, and I’m definitely going to utilize these tips. Thank you, I’m subscribed

@@NateKillian My other channel is called Grey Needle Productions, that’s where I upload commercials and things like that. So here’s some of the things I have. I have a box light and a key light and a little ring light so I’m good on light for now, I have a lapel mic and the condenser mic but not a shotgun mic, something I’m working on. But the main thing to be able to fill myself and get shots I want is I need a gimbal. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and a Canon M 50, and recently I looked at the feiyutech AK2000c, Because it can be controlled with an app and it has a touchscreen monitor to be able to do tracking shots. Although I would love the Ronan, it is pricey
@@robcolone8546 it is, it’s nice to have, but it’s not a need thankfully. If you really want to add movement, you can always shoot in 4K and adjust your key frames in post!

i've just started filming my own short films. i use my iphone se, a tripod, mic & different editing apps 😂 not the best gear to start with but it's something.

I’ve been wanting to shoot some kind of short film for months, but I can’t act, I don’t have a cast or a crew, and-worst of all-I can’t seem to come up with a story! So my question is, what sorts of places can I look for inspiration, for story ideas for my short film?
If you can't act, another cool way of telling a story is with some great b-roll and a voice over. One way I find inspiration for a story is by watching movies or TV shows. Also- watching other creators and seeing their creative process.
You can always do a silent film. All you need is an interesting story and occasionally change the angles/shots to attract the audience. You wouldn't need to talk, or write a dialogue script. I have made a few of these and it really works great as long as you can tell a great story

Thanks! Trying to get our audio better since we just use the Iphone audio that we're filming with. But some scenes are closer than others, and we have mulitple people in different places so the audio never sounds the same.
You’re welcome! One thing you can try is multiple audio sources and syncing them together. So if each person had their own audio source, you might be able to get better audio when you have people in different rooms. All you’d have to do is sync them in post and blend them together to sound like one source!
@@NateKillian Yeah good idea! We don't have the budget yet to buy multiple mics tho (or even one) but maybe we can try using our own iphones, maybe with the earphones mic?
@@dawghousetv you could use your phones and buy some cheap LAVs off of Amazon. You can get a pack of them for like $20

My camera has a mic that attaches to the top of it's balancer and my camera has a screen on it so i think I'll be ok? What do you think? Oh it also has an led light too
Hey Jack! Working with what you have is great. All depends on the style or project you're shooting. Typically with mics, you want to try to get the mic as close to the subject you're capturing for the clearest audio. An LED light is useful with the proper placement! Let me know how else I can help

@@NateKillian Where can I find some guidance on rack focusing from one person to another, in a masked clone shot, in which I am playing both persons, using a common background which will be masked? Have you understood what I'm trying to describe?
@@peasantfarmer3030 hey! Yes, I believe I do. I haven’t used this technique as a rack focus before, but you can try increasing and decreasing the “Gausion blur effect”. Drop the blur effect on top of an adjustment layer, create a mask over which part you want to focus on/create the blur, create key frames increasing the blur when you want that focus to occur.

In a very specific environment it’s possible. It also depends on what you’re filming. If you were in a room that had great sound absorption or if you could get the phone close enough to the subject- you might be able to get good enough audio.
