Something you might give a lot of thought to. Years ago I converted a C-150 to a tail dragger to experimental for research and development. I did my homework for the main landing gear and I was able to acquire the gear legs from a C-140. They give the 150 a much better stance and most importantly MORE propeller clearance when taking off and landing, this saves propellers and engines. The 140 gear legs bolt right into the same gear blocks as the 150 gear legs and the blocks will bolt in the same location as it is on the 140. The bulkheads are already prepunched for the blocks in the 150. Also the tail wheel assembly came from a 140 also. makes it easier to attach the tail wheel. This was done in the middle 1980's while I was working on airplanes and also teaching people to fly I have my Airline Transport Pilot Licenses, Certified flight instructor Rating airplanes instrument and multi engine instructor, Airframe and Power Plant Mechanic Licenses. Would like to hear your thoughts
Awesome!! It such a cool little airplane! Do yourself a favor and either prime or apply a good corrosion inhibitor to the entire structure interior (as you’re not alodyning the new parts). I saw some of the skins had already been replaced in the tail. If you use corrosion inhibitor, don’t use LPS-3 as it’s nasty s##t and not very effective. AV-8 or similar is better as it dries and remains translucent.
Hey thanks for the comment. We’re using prekote, we use it here at work on the otters and they are basically bathing in salt water. Everything in the interior is either in the process of being primed with an etching primer or will be eventually. The skins in the tail were replaced in Fairbanks before we bought it and they were never treated (I guess they thought it was dry enough)
@@mikebristol6466 You guys are doing a great job! I'm actually quite envious. It's been many years since I was on the tools myself but with colleagues we're sometimes fantasising of doing such a project just for the fun of it. Being a straight tail Cessna tail dragger it's really a baby 180 which adds to the value of course... Enjoy and keep the video's coming!
Thanks, I’ve heard the term baby 180 tossed around a lot. I hope to one day make it like that but at the moment it’s only got the o-200 (100hp) in it. Now converting to a 150 hp...👌👍
Great video, thank you for posting. May I suggest that wearing rings in a workshop environment is not the best idea if yoou want to keep your digits intact. (Around 4:10)
Did you pull test your fittings?... like the work.. I manufacture aircraft control cables for a company.. reason I ask.. also takes some of the stretch out of the cables.. keeps the length to the tenths or 8ths
@@mikebristol6466 you could have used a scale.. and ac 43.. and the amm give a good idea of what what the pull should be.. 552 lbs ft lbs.. should be good for 3/16
What is that thing-a-ma-bod doo-hickey called at 2:24? I either need to borrow or buy one if I'm going to use those nice style crimpy things (sorry, I don't know the proper terms, but I do know I need to install new cables). The last time I had any made was for sailboats (shrouds) and I'd have it done at a sailboat shop and I remember their machine to crimp the cable onto the turnbuckle was ENORMOUS. I didn't realize they had small compact ones! Also, how much does it cost for that crimper machine??? Thanks. =)
@@mikebristol6466 oh. my. god. The A&P told me I could either double up those ugly style or get the nice (and pricey) ones. You guys seem to have the nice style. Each is around 10 bucks....ooof, it will add up fast! I hope he has one. Dang, I'm still amazed they're that expensive. Ouch! Thanks for the fast reply!
@@mikebristol6466 I sure wish you lived in Austin, Buddy. =D I suspect the A&P (sorta friend) may have one. I sure hope he does. Today I saw an older 150 with a really nice classy paint job. When do you guys think you'll finish your plane? When will it fly again???
Classy is what we’re going for😉. It’s hard to put a timeline on it. We both work odd hours, but we work on it whenever we can. If it’s done in a year I would be super stoked.
Fantastic Videos 1&2 Please Continue to film and post your projects. Obviously you both are FAA Certificated A&P Mechanic C150 are worth $20-40k will you be upside down when completed?
Maybe, maybe not. If we were paying ourself a standard shop rate (~$120/hr) probably not. But it’s more about the journey, having fun working together and giving this plane a second chance.
After they plane was run into a ditch, when it was converted to a tailwheel, they also repaired the boot cowl. But it was a shoddy job, the piece wasn’t primed or anything and whatever glue they used to affix the insulation heavily corroded the underside.
@@mikebristol6466 Watching you guys put on that nice new sheet of aluminum on the plane was so gratifying! It's like....cracking the skin of Crème brûlée! New parts are always nice, even new nuts and bolts.

Wow! Y’all get so much work done in one video my eyes are sore just from watching! 🤣😎🙌🏻
I’m restoring a 150e in Lancaster texas! KLNC. I watch avidly. I want mine to be as good as new also. I’m not A&P but learning. Thanks, Baron
Watching from Massachusetts. Can't wait for the next episode.
Should have one coming soon, thanks for watching!

We didn’t pull test them, don’t have the equipment to but we do use a go no go gauge. That’s interesting it takes up the stretch.

It’s called a Kearney swager, you definitely need to borrow one, they run a few thousand dollars 😬

Hello good job.
Please, can you confirm name of product for remove the paint , please.?
Which metal is used to make the aircraft's fuselage, wings and cover of the engine part?
Aluminum

Engine baffles look nice and new. Seems someone tried to start showing the thing some love at some point
Yeah the engine had a fresh overhaul when she bought it, so we’ve got that going for us
Hi...new here....what is that tool with the lopper handles? A crimper? Thanks will be looking for new posts.
It’s called a Kearney Swager, and yeah in essence it crimps.
Time for another update y’all :-)
I know haha, should have one coming soon.
I work in sheetmetal when I was in the air force nicaragua ENA braziles managua school national aviation
Why did you make a new boot cowling? What was wrong with the old one? (don't get me wrong, I LOVE new sheet metal)
After they plane was run into a ditch, when it was converted to a tailwheel, they also repaired the boot cowl. But it was a shoddy job, the piece wasn’t primed or anything and whatever glue they used to affix the insulation heavily corroded the underside.
