Thanks! Well it all depends on what you are interested in because there are many different programs for FEA which are all different from each other. Examples: Dynamic crash scenarios (LS-Dyna), large scale loading scenarios like bridges (Ansys and Abaqus), fluid dynamics like aerodynamics of an airplane (any of the mentioned) ect. I mainly specialize in LS-Dyna but I should be able to help with any general questions. I've created a forum which I hope to eventually cover all of the main FEA solvers but you can always any general questions there as well

Came here because James Cameron keeps talking about doing FEA on his submersibles on the news now and I wanted to know what on earth that is. Thanks, this is what I was looking for.
The only part I'm a bit puzzled by is the name. To analyse something means to break it up into elements and understand it that way. So "element analysis" is just unnecessary. "Finite analysis" would mean the same thing as "Finite Element Analysis" (and personally I think "discrete analysis" is more descriptive but that's just me). What the name doesn't tell you is what you're analyzing. I could easily imaginge "Finite Element Analysis" referring to analyzing the chemical composition of the planck era of the big bang or like, well, pretty much anything actually. So I think "discrete stress analysis" is 100X more informative than "Finite Element Analysis". Unless you do apply it to more than just stress, which I think you do. But if it is that general then it really should just be "Discrete analysis". If I'm being honest though, I don't see why it isn't just called "polyhedron modelling". "Finite Element Analysis" just sounds like the sort of term that a humanities student would come up with.

    • @UnpopularMechanics

Great question, finite element method is the math behind all of the different software that perform the “analysis”. You can actually hand calculate using the finite element method.
So, finite element analysis uses the finite element method.

I am looking into getting into FEA at my job this summer, and taking the course in college in the fall. I'll have to keep your channel in mind. Any advice for a person who does CAD professionally and want to switch to being an FEA focused Mech Engineer?

    • @UnpopularMechanics
      @UnpopularMechanics  4 роки тому +1

FEA compared to CAD is like video editing to photography. FEA allows you to "make" something and then see it work, if that makes sense. It's a lot more in-depth. I like it more than just CAD because projects are more interesting and you can correlate results to something that happens in the real-world.

I'm really trying to find a video on matrix form F=Ku and I can't find one. I really need to get a good understanding from scratch and have a few examples. Anything out there?

Luke Theiss hey check out IIT Kharagpur on UA-cam. He’s got lots of videos on matrices and such clear examples. You’ll like it

    Thanks for the video!
If you want to design your own boat, could you teach yourself and learn to use fea with laminates and do it yourself?
    Or is this just nuts?

Design your own virtual boat for simulation? Yeah that’s possible for sure. You would just need CAD of a boat geometry or design the geometry yourself

@@UnpopularMechanics Thanks for answering! No I mean for actually designing and building a boat to travel the oceans on. I know there is a lot to that and that it would be safer and easier to hire an engineer for it.
But for my goal of a solar powered catamaran you need to optimize for weight because you only have very low power available. There are no good designs or building plans that incorporate that atm.
So my question is, if I learn the basics of structural engineering and then teach myself to use some (hopefully free) software to do this FEA optimization to optimize for weight, would that require years or months of learning?
I presume that fea especially for laminates is very high paying so it could be cost effective to DIY.
      So is this nuts? :)

Oh wow! Well that is a huge job but it’s possible. You should first prioritize learning about CAD and how to begin designing the boat. Once you have the CAD created you’ll be able to mesh it and set up a finite element simulation to test for whatever you want. If you are only worried about weight, you can just try to model the CAD and compare the mass between materials commonly used for catamarans. I’m assuming you would need to determine how thick the material for the boat would be and things like that. I’d be happy to help you along the way as this is a pretty ambitious project ;)

      @@UnpopularMechanics Oh wow thanks!
Well I'm "sketching" concepts in Fusion 360 so that isn't the problem, although it's way more work than I hoped to actually design something in CAD properly.
And it's also an iterative process or design spiral, in order to design the boat and it's resistance and hull shape I need to know how heavy it's going to be and how heavy depends on the forces acting on it depending on the weight and hull form...
I have yet to watch your full video series also. There is just a boatload to learn about naval architecture.
What software could I use? Is a trial version of hyper mesh the only sensible option or is there free software that can be used reasonably well.
I know Fusion360 has a fea module but not for laminates / composites. Can you "approximate" composites as isotropic materials if you assume a quadraxial fiber orientation?

There are some free meshing software out there that I've used. IA-FEMesh is one that works pretty well for simple geometries. I'm not super familiar with it but I could make a video once I brush up on it. Also, you can create topics on the forum where you can attach pictures and whatnot to better illustrate any issues that you may have. feassistant.com/forums/
