Great video, thanks. I use this lense on my a7iii, and use the custom button for eye auto focus. I have found this to be my go to lense for group photography
I have this lens for about 9 months now. Can't say anything negative about it. I guess the relationship between this and the GM Mk II can be described as: The Tamron is what you need to get excellent results, the Sony is what you want if you want to show it. I value Tamron lenses a lot for their filter size poilitics, for their IQ, for their excellent rubber gasket on the mount (#1 among all the companies, they feel the most solid and trustworthy - have never let me down in rain, ice or snow). The focus ring on this lens is on point. There is resistance for precise control, while being smooth in operation at the same time. The 28-75 G2 is what f.e. the 24-105 would like to be, but is in no way. The only thing I don't like is that the lens is definitely front-heavy and tends to always pull down a bit. This makes recording steady video handheld a bit tricky.
My gripes with this lens are 1. Video auto focus isn't on par with native Sony lenses (incl those without the new AF motors) and the Sigma 28-70. AF tracking works, but struggles to keep up, drifting in and out of focus when moving towards or away from the subject. The focus also seems to shift in steps and is not what I would consider smooth, regardless of AF transition speed. Better than 3rd party lenses from the a7iii era, but a noticeable step down from native glass for me. For stills, zooming too fast will cause the lens to lose focus completely even when tracking in AF-C. Probably happens in video too but I don't crash zoom much apart from adjusting focal length. 2. Active stabilisation is much worse than native lenses. I can get away with a handhold walk at 70mm with a Sony lens, but barely at 28mm on the tamron because of how much it jumps. Sigma 28-70 is even worse in this regard. 3. I wish it would zoom out to 24mm. It would ruin the form factor, but I find myself having to bring this lens + a 24mm prime to cover all my bases. Actually interested in the new Sony 24-50mm because of this 🙃 That being said, this has been my workhorse lens for a couple years now too. Great handling and rendering. The first two complaints are sadly really more of a Sony software limitation. I don't have the 1/4000s shutter limit on my a7siii.
Thanks for your thoughts! It’s always good to hear others experiences with this lens. Overall it will never beat native glass you’re right, but for what it offers it’s pretty good 😊
This one is a very overdue one, let me know what you think down below!
bought this lens a year ago and still rocking it, such a great lens!
Glad you’re having as good as an experience as I am!
