@Ian Ford Yeah 5 Million is just a drop in the bucket for an owner like the Astros. I personally think The Astros should have to forfeit every game for this coming season. Having a penalty like that would show teams the MLB is dead serious about these kinds of actions.

Why no mention of batting titles for altuve and Betts? If they knew not to swing at a breaking ball in dirt, their power numbers increased, strikeouts declined, walks increased, hard hit balls increased...even if they didn't do it every game, I wonder if other hitters would have won them, made bonuses, etc.

Yes, because he bet on baseball, including his own team, and he knew it was wrong. He knew the penalty, as the rule against betting on baseball is on every clubhouse in MLB. He impacted the integrity of the game. The guys he was betting with were not good guys.

He bet ON his team. He didn’t bet against them. The fact that he bet on his team shows his confidence that they’d win. It’s not like he was cheating to throw the game. What he did didn’t affect the outcome of the game.
As if the people cheating here didn’t “know it was wrong”? As if they didn’t affect the “integrity of the game”?
Explain to me how Rose’s bets “affected the integrity of the game”, yet people actively cheating to win more didn’t.

      Steven Lundgrin
      No.
I’m advocating that the punishment fit the infraction.
Rose bets didn’t affect the outcome of games. There’s no reason he should have a lifetime ban. He never did anything to negatively affect the outcome of the game. He went out and tried to win.
You know who should have a lifetime ban? People that cheated repeatedly, and won batting/MVP awards. The heads/owners of teams that won World Series titles thanks to cheating.
I guess you’re the type that agrees with chopping off a person’s hand if they take a loaf of bread, but give a slap on the wrist to a tycoon if they fleece millions like Madoff.

    • @slundgr

That is true. In the case of the 1919 Reds, it's a tough argument. On the one hand, they didn't cheat and they deserved whatever they got. They've become a reflection of the insane capitalist tribal win at all cost mentality which has gripped main stream everything. Analytics and technology have taken over every aspect of sports, from the on field gameplay to the player contracts to the secondary ticket market, its all disgusting.
I've completely abandoned the major sports, they are only distracting our society away from imposing true change. I did come up with a solution I think though.
A 5% "Community" Tax on all major sports franchises which goes directly back into the local community surrounding that franchise. Reinvigorate the local sports leagues with employing ex athletes to work at training centers,be coaches, etc, which also helps funnel the athletes into a positive transition after retirement. All registration is free for any child, and equipment subsidies/donation system setup for the kids who need it. 5% would be big enough to cover helping rebuild and the fields and community centers to be future friendly places. Have free wifi, encourage youth to want to be together in places with each other and have positive mentors.
The real lessons you learn from sports aren't from watching your favourite team on a box, it's from actually playing that sport with other humans and experiencing all the ups and downs together and in your own head. If they want to continue to run these crooked leagues in cahoots with the crooked media channels who support them then TAX those pricks and put the money back into the kids they are stealing from and brainwashing.

Eagle A guy in the dugout is not going to be able to see the catcher's signals. If the pitcher is tipping his pitches that's different but you'd be an idiot to point that out by some audible tone because that would tip off the other team something's up. If a pitcher is consistently dropping his hands before he throws a breaking ball or an off speed pitch the person with the best vantage point to see this is going to be the batter.

@@eaglethree1I got ya. I would think signaling a batter from the dugout with a sound or hand signal wouldn't be a problem if a pitcher was tipping his pitches if that knowledge was discovered by non-technological observations and transferred through non-technological devices to the batter it just wouldn't be smart. The other team might be tipped off and be more observant of what's happening and figure out what the other team is seeing that they aren't noticing. Discretion is most important for the simple fact of not being accused of cheating but for a tipping action to continue occurring to exploit. It's totally fine for a third base coach to tip-off a batter of a next possible pitch through non-technological observations. The same goes for the bullpen and or a runner on any base if they can see a sign it's totally fine for them to tip off the batter of a pitch.
