There is feeling in this song. Patty grabs that, and rides it. This is powerful. Direct. That's what a song is about. To take us to places inside ourselves. I'm sold. This rendition moved me.
Patty Griffin's tone, alone, is so amazing that it makes me cry just from the pure joy and honor of hearing her sing a single word, a single note. This is a GREAT video. Thank you! She is the best singer/songwriter walking on this earth, in my opinion. If life was even partially fair, every music lover would have her name on the tip of their tongue.
This song is so beautiful, that all the covers are all right... I can't explain why I've always loved the Patty Griffin's version: so pure, so simple and true. Maybe this "naked" version make us focus on the words. Anyway, thanks for this video from a Bruce French fan!
I thought I was the only high voiced woman that sang this song? Only 2 differences, I'm not famous and I play it with the piano accompanying me!! LOVE THIS!!
You are right on, Patty does a great job with Racing. Check out Tori Amos' cover of "I'm on Fire". I am a big Bruce fan who loves when a girl covers one of his song with class.
Why does she sing "-59 chevy" instead of -69? I don't ask tha she need to be a math wiz, but to sing the lyrics right. anyway... great version. never heard of her before.
"no one sings a bruce springsteen song like a dame!!! " Oddly enough, women do Springsteen very well! Have you ever heard Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl do "Tougher Than the Rest"? It's fantastic. And Patti Smith or Natelie Merchent on "Because The NIght". I had never noticed until you mentioned it, but Springsteen songs, which should be so macho, really work for women...(or maybe we just like that sort of women!) :-)
I'm ashamed that some of my fellow Bruce fans are so closed-minded. Just because Griffin ins't Bruce doesn't mean she shouldn't do this song, or that she doesn't do it well. Lighten up.
You've never heard of her because you don't really know music. The puerile and witless nature of your posts make that obvious. Patty has been called the one of the best singer/songwriter on the planet right now for good reason. And that ain't me saying it, it's people like Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams and Dave Matthews and Bruce Cockburn and on and on. So instead of putting down something you don't know, maybe you should take a listen. You might actually be AMAZED like the rest of us.
Somebody should tell this chick that Bruce wrote about a '69 Chevy, not a '59. GM didn't start making cars with 396-hp engines until the mid-60's, and a '59 certainly wasn't a "fuelie" (fuel-injected). What a joke.
@nina052696 It's not just about cars, of course, but it comes from a place of respect for that culture. This little girl clearly doesn't know a fuelie from a fudge brownie, so her singing it is an insult to Bruce and the many people who take racing culture seriously. She she picked up a guitar and sang some shit that she heard on a record.
One of my favorite Springsteen songs and one of my favorite versions of it. Patty kicks so much ass.
She is one of the most amazing artists of our time. I get chills every time I watch this.

@GuitarzanWSC I could not agree more. Her rendition of "Stolen Car" from "1,000 Kisses" is breathtaking.
Completely blown away by this version.
Now have to track down some Patty Griffin albums.

Has anyone ever seen Patty Griffin singing Bruce's "Because the Night?" Would be a great cover for her, it seems...
Patty outdoes the Boss. Immortal.

@ezl2010able -- Wow. I wrote that TWO YEARS AGO. And of all the comments here, you chose that as your focus? *rolls eyes*
'Stolen Car', sounds terrific but I can only find a version with the first minute on 'You tube',
Any suggestions where I can find the full song?
i believe it is in dropped D tuning.

@davis771 she's fantastic, deep, sensitive, warm, it's true

Almost as good as Bruce! I am sure he is proud of this.
