  • Synopsis of lesson 276:
    Hiṁsā
Ahiṁsā when practiced as a norm does not deal with mitigating Rāga-Dveṣa hence it is superfluous.
There is concomitance of Rāga and Dveṣa, and Hiṁsā is practiced. There is Drohaṁ. Mind is infested by Kāma, Krodha, etc.
So it becomes Ahiṁsātmak activity only when motor organs are kept away from Hiṁsā.
In normative AHiṁsā, there is a semblance and pretence which is put up for social approval. Such Ahiṁsā is more dangerous than Hiṁsā. Because people are not aware of what is bubbling under the overt cover of Ahiṁsā.
Certain amount of Hiṁsā is inevitable since life feeds on life. It is not possible for anyone to not kill microscopic life forms. Such Hiṁsā is devoid of Drohaṁ. There is no intention of hurt or anger, malice etc. involved. A spiritually conscious person understands and knows that no killing can be endorsed or justified, yet it is inevitable. We sin to be able to live.
Such a conscientious one takes care to have measures for Pāpakṣlāṇam; to mitigate the heap of such vice. The Yajña principle and Pancamahāyajñas given by seers of lore help do this.
In our house we have a hearth. In ancient times, it was made of mud. Wood was burned to light a fire for cooking etc. In present times we have burners, heaters, etc.
Grinding stones are used for grinding- Hiṁsā takes place here unintentionally.
Broomsticks sweeping out dirt, the pestle and mortar pounding and grinding, a vessel of boiled water for drinking; all these involve Hiṁsā. Merely to live and exist, we end up killing many lives. Also, millions of cells die every second and millions of new cells grow. Hence dying and taking birth are a constant and natural process of metabolism.
Hence, the Pancha Mahayagñas. Brahmayagña - learning and studying the Vedās; Adhyapanaṁ and Adhyanaṁ. Learning and teaching the noble sciences, traditional wisdom (Vidyās). Must always be a teacher to someone, as a noble act, service and not economic activity.
Pitruyagña - Tarpaṇaṁ, offerings to the departed, offering gratitude for what they have done and given,
Devayagña -Worship fire principle, offering daily Homa Havanaṁ, Swāhākāra. Namanaṁ, Vandanaṁ, Archanaṁ, Poojanaṁ.
Today this is out of fashion. We can at least praise by reciting Slokas.

Wonderful series about ahimsa! It should be listened by many more people! Shorter videos are very good as they may encourage new viewers to listen till the end. Personally I could listen to Prashantji for hours! Thank you for setting up this channel 🙏
