I'm in my 70's, and used to play guitar. Pretty much most of my life I always wondered what a bass lead would sound like, and why it was never done before. Well if it was done before I damn sure didn't know about it. Then I stumbled on to your video's and for the last 6+ months have been blown away by your mastery of the bass. Thank you for bringing these videos out and showing the world just how versatile a bass guitar actually is when played by a master such as yourself. Again, thank you and keep the vids coming. God Bless.
It makes me happy today that the bass is getting more recognition as an instrument. The guitar is cool, but the bass needs its share of attention for how awesome it is.
Check out Primus, their bass is leading most of the time. They play some ,,special,, music, so you may not be into it for reasons other than the bass though.
"why it was never done before" uh oh you've attracted the attention of the Primus and Rush fans. You should probably run, or else they might try exposing you to weird time signatures!
Best variation on "Just the two of us" I've heard in a long time. And - for me - the best solo you've played since the "impossible" one and maybe the Jack Black percussion...
The fact that Charles sounds this amazing on an ACOUSTIC bass is just INCREDIBLE!! How in the world do you tap on acoustic bass that clean and precise?! You truly are one of a kind. The very best of the best!

Holy cow Charles. Wow! The nuance with which you play is what always knocks my socks off. My kid is at Berklee, ( guitar) and you are a part of the reason why.
Charles - When I'm stressed, my job is driving me nuts, whatever has gotten into my head, I can always pull up one of your videos and just let it all go. A pure joy to watch (and listen), and you clearly love what you do. Your passion, your calling...it's a delight to watch/listen to you play.
Charles one thing you do so well in your composition is being able to sound like playing every single instrument this piece had a little everything Jazz Spanish (Bass) loved it.
The sound of this bass is soooo beautiful! I’m always very impressed by your dexterity, especially in this video. An acoustic bass doesn’t feel like an electric one and I imagine that you need more precision to make it sound that perfect. Incredible performance.
I wonder how much magic he does in post to clean it up - I agree I’ve never seen other bassists do what he does but it almost seems too good o be true lol
One way you can tell how awesome Charles is is that he puts out new videos faster than it would take most people to remember one of these pieces, let alone learn it up to speed.
What I really appreciate in this composition is the delicate usage of the various techniques aimed to create a music rather than a show. Too often skilled musicians use those techniques mainly to show off, but not in this case. It's that very moment when you may close your eyes and just for the sheer enjoyment.
I love how Charles shows in every video how to make a solo full of musicality, and not just "spitting" a slap (or any other) technique over a fingerboard.
Something about that little lick at 1:21 does it for me. I'd love to hear a whole composition with the same feel as that like the kind of music that often is associated with depictions of ancient Egypt
I'm 38 and about a year ago my 16yo son asked me to buy him a guitar. I got my first bass when I was around his age, but between military service, and just general "adulting," I hadn't been able to play since my teenage years. So, I got it for him, and afterwards started looking at basses for myself, and also starting watching youtube vids, mostly you and Davie. I just wanted to say thank you, for your contribution to reigniting the passion I had 20+ years ago. I'm sure once my fingers callus up again and stop hurting, they'll thank you too. Lol
All the totally brilliant technical skills ignored, what regularly moves me the most is that natural GROOVE that you maintain. Yes, BASS is about groove, but there are grooves that move your feet a little and then there are GROOVES that pick you up and take you with them and when the song is over leave you swinging for the rest of the day ... it's THAT kind of groove that's in your playing. Thank you!
