Steve Wright in the afternoon is one of those great British institutions that can not ever be replaced . What a terrible loss to radio broadcasting . I have no reason to listen to the BBC anymore. God bless you Mr Wright and thank you for the decades of brilliant content, you will be missed enormously in the afternoon .
I live overseas and tuning in to Steve Wright in the afternoon has always meant being "home" for me, especially this year after not being able to make it back for three years. Thank you Steve for the fantastic times, we appreciate everything you have done to make us smile in the afternoons. A wonderful presenter who leaves having made an indelible mark on the world of broadcasting.
Steve Wright In the afternoon is a British institution , like Buckingham palace , like fish n chips , like the Clifton suspension bridge , Viz magazine , tea and crumpets , cucumber sandwiches , Weston-Super- M a r e , the palm trees of Torquay , rain in the s u m m e r , Rod Stewart , Only Fools And Horses , inferior-quality cocaine , Carry On films , political sex scandals , sandals , bird-watching , and ginger nuts. The afternoons are never going to be the same.
I heard this announcement yesterday afternoon from Steve Wright on BBC Radio 2 at home & I was somewhat bemused, shocked & surprised all at the same time. I can remember Steve doing the Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 1 back in the 1990's & I have always enjoyed listening to Steve on BBC Radio 2 doing his popular Big Show in the afternoon on weekdays with his 'prod squad' of Tim, Janie & Bobby Pryor (the Bobster he affectionately calls her) & of course Serious Jockin' with no G on Friday afternoons. I will miss Steve Wright in the Afternoon come October on BBC Radio 2, his London accent & his countdown to Serious Jockin' with no G during the week even though he will still be presenting Love Songs on Sunday mornings. I do wish Steve Wright all the best for the future, he sure will be missed.
Come October , just when it's cold and drizzly and the afterno o n s are drawing in & we'll all need his cheery voice and zany antics to lift our weary spirits , he'll be nowhere to be seen!! Helen Thomas = FOOL !!!
Steve Wright is the best DJ ever. I have always listened to Steve. He is an institution and legend. Steve Wright is our radio friend. He cannot be replaced. LOVE YOU STEVE
Sorry to hear this, and I sincerely hope Steve wasn't pushed. He may have been in the role longer than most, but there is a very good reason, given he is by far and away the best DJ the BBC has ever had and likely will ever have.
Steve Wright in the afternoon has been a pillar for the station for many years, when he leaves in September the station will fall from that pillar. Steve Wright's programme over the years from the Radio 1 old school to today has been nothing short of inspirational and will be sadly missed. Well done Steve for a great job over the years.
Been listening to Steve since my farming days in the 80’s A memory out of the blue *listening on a sunny afternoon, whilst walling, with my tranny (transistor radio) propped on the wall top. Thank you for all the pleasant afternoons Steve.
The BBC is losing it if it has not already lost, its way. Let me guess, he's too white, not feminine enough, I wonder who the replacement will be? whoever it is I shall not be listening. Shame, Steve is a talented and funny broadcaster whose musical taste matches that of mine.
I always have fond memories of growing up listening to Steve Wright as it reminds me of my mum who always tuned in…..she’s not dead, she just doesn’t like it anymore
Thank you Steve for that moving message to your many, many listeners . Wish you well in all you do and thank you for keeping us listeners entertained with your posse . I'll continue to listen 👂 until you decide to move on . Here's hoping that you'll stay with BBC Radio 2 . You have a lot of love out there from your fans 💕🤗
Simon Mayo moved his brilliant drive time show lock stock and barrel to another station and I listen daily on my drive home from work, apart from ad breaks its pretty much the same. Steve Wright should now do the same, sod the BBC.
This means Ken Bruce will be the only show worth listening to on Radio 2. So, so sad. Steve is a pillar of my life and I can’t remember there ever being a moment where he’s not been on my radio each day.
@Amperzand true. But…Lisa tarback and Sara cox are dreadful.. and.. O’grady show is a -bit old fashioned . tried them once or twice had to switch off. But that’s just my opinion.
Not listened to his show for a long time but great credit to him. Amazing longevity and has never fallen into the BBC trap of being over exposed like Jonathan Ross, Claudia Winkleman, Jeremy Vine. Ken Bruce is pretty much the last of Radio 2's golden era.
Steve you are and all ways will be the nations finest radio presenter , it will Never Be The Same Without You at The Helm . I like many many millions have listened and loved your inimitable style over many many years . They say all good things come to an end , well why do they have to. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. You have my sincerest admiration for all the enjoyment you have given over the past 24 years , and I like the other listener wish you every success in all your new projects, and completely support you as you are a True Gentleman . WE LOVE YOU STEVE . You really are a NATIONAL TREASURE. September will be a very Emotional Time for yourself and the Crew , closing tune I’m sure will touch so many hearts . You are part of the Family .THANK YOU FOR ALL THE MEMORABLE YEARS STEVE .
The other big radio stations will be falling over each other to get Steve because of the millions of listeners he'll bring with him. He won't be off the air for long.
You have been part of our working week for such a long time and will be sadly missed by all, no more Radio 2 in the afternoon for us ( Scott Mills No) then, take care Steve and thank you from us all for those fantastic afternoons
Always feel very nostalgic for my now very distant youth whenever I hear that voice. His show on Radio 2 was at the same time as his old Radio 1 show and followed his old format he had in the 1980s.I suppose Radio 2 now is probably aiming to capture the ravers of the 90s and early 2000,s who are now in middle age. Steve ‘love the show ‘Wright will be missed by many yearning for those days of his old medium wave show and ‘Mr Angry ‘ and Wichita linesman closer
Been listening to Steve since I was 16, the varied music and his wit is what has kept me listening. I’m 34 now and this will be one of those changes in life that will shake up my routine massively. Going to miss the possy.
Scott Mills is not the man to replace Steve Wright, the BBC is making yet another huge mistake. I listen to the breakfast show and the great Ken Bruce I switch over when Vine comes on and then I switch back for Steve Wright, now it will be Zoe and Ken’s shows and then a different station for the rest of the day.
Me to , the BBC see it as going forward but Steve Wright and Ken Bruce are for me the backbone of that station. The audience volumes will dip in the autumn, when Simon Mayo left they did , they seem hell bent on replacing quality with cheaper alternatives.
The BBC wouldn't see that as a problem. They can't stand their older (and most loyal) audiences and are obsessed with chasing the 'yoof' market. Just look at Pick of the Pops which not so long back regularly featured charts from the sixties and even fifties. Nowadays its centre of gravity is the 80s and 90s with the odd duck into the later 1970s.
will not listen to radio 2 again 😡steve Wright is the best DJ ever. never done a bad show in whole career and was always fun to listen to. missing him already. very sad day😢
This is a sad day for Steve's fans, I've been listening to him for years, Radio 1 then Radio 2, characters like Mr Angry from Purley through to Ask Elvis and beyond. Who'll be next... Ken Bruce with pop master. At least after September I'll be able to catch the 1st hour of Simon Mayo's Drivetime show now on Greatest Hits Radio. How many other people will retune to other stations. All the best Steve.

I can't believe it. He's 67 but sounds Bout 40 Full of energy and funny and sounds caring and sentimental Why can't he just carry on. Everybody love Steve Wright ❤
It shows what a true pro that Steve is, that this announcement didn’t interrupt the running order of the show and waited right till the end credits to give the news. A true legend of radio, probably went on a bit too long at the end, but Scott Mills has some huge shoes to fill.
Steve Wright was always my fave DJ back in the '80's on Radio 1. On one occasion I was driving to work for an afternoon shift and he told a joke that literally made me laugh so hard I was crying and could barely see where I was going! @@raypurchase801 me too
I live abroad too and feel exactly the same way
Hi Simon, me also. I have been overseas for 20ish years and having Radio 2 reminds me of home. Things will never be the same.
100 percent thats how I feel. Its homely ♥️
Very sorry to hear this I love Steve Wright in the afternoon.
I be missin (no g) Steve terribly
Come October , just when it's cold and drizzly and the afterno o n s are drawing in & we'll all need his cheery voice and zany antics to lift our weary spirits , he'll be nowhere to be seen!!
Helen Thomas = FOOL !!!
Steve showed more loyalty to the BBC than they showed to him in the end. Shame on them.
Absolutely
Will miss you Steve. Good luck with whatever you do in the future
Steve Wright is the best DJ ever. I have always listened to Steve. He is an institution and legend. Steve Wright is our radio friend.
He cannot be replaced.
LOVE YOU STEVE
Steve is a legend.Love listening to him every week day.You know the old saying "If it's not broke, don't try & fix it " 👍👍
Bless you, I can hear in your voice it hurts.
Steve Wright along with Tony Blackburn, Jo wiley and Ken Bruce are the last of the great Radio 2 DJs, weekday afternoons won't be the same.
Sorry to hear this, and I sincerely hope Steve wasn't pushed. He may have been in the role longer than most, but there is a very good reason, given he is by far and away the best DJ the BBC has ever had and likely will ever have.
RIP Great DJ
What a terrible decision! That’s me switching from Radio 2
Trouble is though loads of radio stations out there.. none of them are interesting enough DJs.
Been listening to Steve since my farming days in the 80’s
A memory out of the blue *listening on a sunny afternoon, whilst walling, with my tranny (transistor radio) propped on the wall top.
Thank you for all the pleasant afternoons Steve.
Truly miss Steve Wright. Best DJ ever.
Its so sad, he is the wrong "profile " for todays BBC so they sacked him
The BBC is losing it if it has not already lost, its way.
Doesn't get better than Steve Wright!! What the f... Are they thinking?
this is a tragedy....Steve is a jewel ...always has been...
this is a great loss and another box ticking exercise by the BBC...
Mum has listened to Steve for 5 yrs in Truro carehome after a stroke. Thank you Steve xxx 💛🌞💫
RIP Steve 😢
So humble. Thank you Steve for the amazing shows while i was knee deep in work.
Simon Mayo moved his brilliant drive time show lock stock and barrel to another station and I listen daily on my drive home from work, apart from ad breaks its pretty much the same. Steve Wright should now do the same, sod the BBC.
Scala Radio Chris W. I like listening to Scala Radio from time to time, nice classical music they play.
This means Ken Bruce will be the only show worth listening to on Radio 2. So, so sad. Steve is a pillar of my life and I can’t remember there ever being a moment where he’s not been on my radio each day.
You speak my mind. Got me through some dark times on my life
Always a tonic when I’m down or not well
We still have Sarah Cox, Liza Tarbuck and Paul O'Grady, so all is not lost.
@Amperzand true. But…Lisa tarback and Sara cox are dreadful.. and.. O’grady show is a -bit old fashioned . tried them once or twice had to switch off. But that’s just my opinion.
@@sofiaplatini3273Fair enough. Just realised they're all northerners! Maybe that's why I love em! But we're all agreed Scott Mills sucks right?! 🤣
Not listened to his show for a long time but great credit to him. Amazing longevity and has never fallen into the BBC trap of being over exposed like Jonathan Ross, Claudia Winkleman, Jeremy Vine. Ken Bruce is pretty much the last of Radio 2's golden era.
Absolutely love Steve Wright - always puts a smile on my face when I listen to him..
A dreadful mistake. He, and Ken Bruce are the only programmes on radio 2 worth listening to. I'm really upset about this.
Too right comrade
God bless you Steve Wright from Andy "J" x
This is so sad, I’ve listened to Steve Wright for ages how does it go, if it’s not broken don’t, thanks again Mr Wright
You have been part of our working week for such a long time and will be sadly missed by all, no more Radio 2 in the afternoon for us ( Scott Mills No) then, take care Steve and thank you from us all for those fantastic afternoons
Look out Ken Bruce !, you will be next. That will kill off radio two and the BBC Ken is by far the best now
Sorry I disagree I think Jeremy Vine will be next
If Ken leaves, Radio 2 will be over for me and will never be the same again after that. 💔
UPDATE: He's left. R.I.P. Radio 2
@@adam2.075 same here.
Ken Bruce will be next. Once Ken goes, Radio 2 is done as far as I am concerned.
Spot on with your prediction,
Ken isn't on radio 2
The last one remaining of the holy triumvirate, the other being Wogan
Steve you deserve a good long break. I will miss you but will continue on to do more. But do not give up Djing. Love you xxxx
Been listening to Steve Wright in the Afternoon and Morning etc, for 40 years, man and boy.
Steve Wright your a legend, good luck with the future plans.
Vernon Kay should be the new host
Me to , the BBC see it as going forward but Steve Wright and Ken Bruce are for me the backbone of that station. The audience volumes will dip in the autumn, when Simon Mayo left they did , they seem hell bent on replacing quality with cheaper alternatives.
@@robertlee2791 he shite. His musical knowledge stretches as far as 1990
The BBC wouldn't see that as a problem.
Absolute ...until Ken o'clock....then back to Absolute when Vile comes on....
will not listen to radio 2 again 😡steve Wright is the best DJ ever. never done a bad show in whole career and was always fun to listen to. missing him already. very sad day😢
I have been listening to and loving this radio show for half of my life. I am so sad to hear that Steve is leaving it. 🙁 Andrea ..
This is a sad day for Steve's fans, I've been listening to him for years, Radio 1 then Radio 2,
characters like Mr Angry from Purley through to Ask Elvis and beyond. Who'll be next... Ken Bruce with pop master. At least after September I'll be able to catch the 1st hour of Simon Mayo's Drivetime show now on Greatest Hits Radio. How many other people will retune to other stations. All the best Steve.
Pure class, simply the best. HUGE mistake for BBC but then they've lost touch already?
I’ve listened to Steve for years we couldn’t wait for him to come on the radio in the workshop great listen ,great laughs another casualty of the BBC axe, Mayo , Wright , is Ken next ,the death of radio 2 🤔 good luck Steve have a pint with Mayo 😢👍👨🏻🏭
I'm can't believe they have done that to Steve Wright in the afternoon l love listening my favourite time when lm at home and in the garden my best times have been going on holiday Steve on the radio and we sing along 😀 l happy he's still on till the autumn 🍂 but will miss my afternoon with Steve the BBC have got it wrong 😢
RIP Steve
RIP Steve. Legendary. Nobody else compares.
I have been listening to Steve Wright since he was a saturday afternoon radio DJ. This latest decision in the words Mr furious has ' Made my blood boil ' . Good luck with your future Steve & thanks for all the laughs you brought to my Saterday lunch times at work in my 20s. Love M
Well, that's it for me i was just about hanging on anyway, once ken Bruce goes it will be it .
Listening to you most of my life Steve, starting first on Radio 1.Very disappointing news! If it's not broke, break it mentality seems to come to mind.Wont be long until I hear you again with talent like yours Steve.
God bless you brother 🙏 xx take care x love your programme xx 😘
I remember you Steve at the beginning with Mr. Angry, still love your shows today.😀🙃
Mike Read used to do the voice of Mr Angry! I wrote and told Mike that I knew it was him, after he did an impression of Mr Angry and sounded more like him than Mr Angry did! ...Six weeks later Mr Angry was no more. Oh no! How angry do you have to be to kill Mr Angry?!
I can't believe it.
He's 67 but sounds Bout 40
Full of energy and funny and sounds caring and sentimental
Why can't he just carry on.
Everybody love Steve Wright ❤
RIP steve.
It shows what a true pro that Steve is, that this announcement didn’t interrupt the running order of the show and waited right till the end credits to give the news. A true legend of radio, probably went on a bit too long at the end, but Scott Mills has some huge shoes to fill.
Reminds me of the shake up at radio 1 in the 90s.
Steve Wright was always my fave DJ back in the '80's on Radio 1. On one occasion I was driving to work for an afternoon shift and he told a joke that literally made me laugh so hard I was crying and could barely see where I was going!
All the best with the new projects Mr Wright.
Mike in Perth, Australia
Love you mate, been listening to you for 40 years..a crazy decision. Why is this not our decision as listeners and licence fee payers?
It's nothing to do with being good at your job, it's all about ticking boxes. Steve Wright was 1 of the best.
The BBC are just disgusting, I hope whoever is responsible for this gets what they deserve. Steve Wright is the ultimate professional.
Head of Radio 2 Helen Thomas is responsible , and hopefully her foolishness will , come the Autumn , come back and bite her hard on the ✴rse! Followed by her demotion.
@@sirbarnabyst.johntoffingto9017 I can only hope that this will be the case. I grew up believing in the BBC, now I have given up watching television so I don't help pay the lefty wonkers and I would never trust a word they say.
Just heard the sad news Steve has died🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏😢😢
I used to listen to him back in the day
😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
RIP Steve
Gone too young
Hes the main reason i started listening to radio 2...
One of the best radio shows in British history. I used to listen to Steve's show all the time when I lived in the UK. He was an amazing disc just with a terrific voice and played fantastic music!
Goodbye silly steve, you were serious jockin alright. Legend. Hero.
As a self employed builder who never listens to any other station than the fantastic team at radio 2 and is now losing the God father of radio this is absolute madness !!!! My working day revolves around Ken Bruce. Jeremy vine then the God father himself steve Wright this is the man who has a working class of sense of humour I wish him all the very best and hope he gets snapped up by some other station . If this is progress then what a load of rubbish..Steve Wright I thank-you for the years of fun and laughter and to the Plant Pot who came up with this new idea I hope it falls flat on its face and your out the door with your box of madness ideas "
I've gone from loving the BBC TO HATING IT ON ONE BLACK FRIDAY AFTERNOON
WE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THE SHOW STEVE
GOD I LOVE STEVE WRIGHT IN THE AFTERNOON
PLEASE CHANGE YOUR MIND BBC 2 PLEEEAASE
I WANT TO CRY
Steve Wright is the best.
Please don't take him off in the afternoon.
I've listened to him from the beginning, and no one can take his place.
Love Hils Swain
And the day has finally come thanks for presenting this show for 23 years Steve Wright!
I've been listening to Steve Wright in the afternoon since 1980 on Radio 1 on AM. Later on Radio 2 via internet. So sad a good programme stops. Thank's Steve for many years of good radio and fun!
Well done Steve and good luck for the future 😉
_"Hang the blessed DJ, because the music that they constantly play, it says nothing to me about my life"_
Morrisey wrote that specifically about Steve Wright 35 years ago
WHAT! The geezer keeps us going working. FFS! Why? Just because he's been there a long time. Think of all the laughs. Bad decision.
I couldn’t wait to 2 o’clock . I used to say it’s Steve o’clock time
The only reason I listen to radio 2 is for Steve Wright in the afternoon
The BBC obviously don't care what we listeners want! Absolutely gutted by this news, the show is always fresh and uplifting so why on earth do they want to replace it?
Exactly! Just what you need for that last couple of hours at work. Ridiculous decision from the BBC. Scott Mills is terrible too. They will lose listeners in their droves.
Am gutted ! Weekday afternoons just won't be the same without great tunes, factoids and banter with Tim, Janey, Bobby and Steve 😢
Leaving or being pushed ? the one thing i wish he would bring back before he goes is ASK ELVIS this slot always had me in tears ,a true gent and legend ,BBC you are making a BIG mistake
Going miss Steve so much.
We’ve all had it so good for decades mate
Absolutely shocking news. You can tell Steve is reading a script prepared FOR him not by him.
I have followed Steve Wright since he joined Radio 1 in 1981, and when he moved to Radio 2 in the late 90s. In other words listening to Steve has been a part of my life. I am absolutely disgusted in the way he has been treated. Helen Thomas you should be ashamed of Yourself.
