It is a great bike. I did 5000 mi Upstate NY to Key West Fl. with some side trips as well. 24 days and the bike was flawless. Two-up with camping gear also. I ride it off road as well and it is superb. I did need to change tires to the excellent Heidenau K-60's but it was competent on trails even with the tourances it came on. It shouldn't be confused with a dirt bike (like confusing a supertanker with a speed boat) but, when ridden well, it is great. Face it, even a cheap, lightweight KLR mostly is ridden on the street. This is far more capable in a variety of ways.I have no trouble keeping up with the DR/KLR/XL crowd on dirt (unless they are very aggressive and good) but I wouldn't want to do distance on any of those bikes. When I want to get more aggressive on dirt I have an old dr350 that is cheap to drop. I test rode the 1200 Explorer and 800 Tiger as well as the GS and 990 KTM, for how and where I ride this gave the most bang for the buck (although the 1200 Triumph 3cyl sounds and feels tremendous, just not worth an extra $4000). The GS was nice also, but very overpriced when compared to the Tenere.
I love my Tenere...You guys keep talking Tiger 800. But here in America there are not many Triumph dealerships , There are Yamaha dealerships everywhere . I believe this Super Tenere is the best bike I have ever owned. The bike is built tough and wants to be rode.
Thanks for a absolute great review Clubby and Russ, tops mate. I test rode a Triumph Tiger XC800 the other week and compared it to the SuperTen and it didn't come close. To the guy that preferred the Tiger over the SuperTenere, did you test ride one. I think you made a terrible mistake. I now own a Supertenere and have test ridden alot of bikes and nothing much comes close to this bike for what it is built for. A few mods and they can then do a whole lot more. Very impressive bikes Yamaha...
@steinert I think you kinda lost my message. What I was saying is, I wanted a tenere, until I was able to compare it to the XC800. I am aware that the new 1200 Adventure Triumph would be closest to a performance comparison with the Tenere. I am saying the xc800 was my preference considering weight, hp rating, bulkyness, and of course the price. As I am still waiting on the xc800, I am still happy with my decision. I do like the Tenere, but considering everything, wasnt worth it!
Hi all, I bought the Yamaha super tenere 1200 2010 with 37000km on the clock, about two weeks ago and I love the bike, looks very big and intimidating but handles very well ,light on fuel and runs absolutely great, obviously a new thing so still feeling the bike if you know what I mean😅 giving 22km/l thats about 50mpg, lovely motorcycle. Regards from SA...
@dakaraabbccdd While the GS is probably superior, so is the price. Here in the US the GS sells for $18k, Yamaha will sell for $14k. That's a big difference that will certainly taken into consideration by many when choosing which bike to get.
Hell of a promo vid! That's exactly what I'd want the bike for. Shame there so expensive to crash. Better stick to my old xtz750... she can take a good beating.
pretty bike,....but as luck would have it, the yamaha shop here is also a Triumph dealer. I took one look at the xc800, which is about the same hp rating, but a lot less weight, and approx $4k cheaper. The Yamaha didnt even make it to the starting gate. I bought the xc800 Tiger. Havent picked it up yet, The Tenere has Not been selling around here. Japan has its problems with quality, with lots of parts manufactured in China. Can you say quality Control
Kari Coad Yes, I definitely have, and may well wind up with one once I make this huge, life-changing decision. :) I just enjoy harping on Yamaha (my overall favorite Japanese brand) for ignoring the US market with the XTZ660.
Thats not right. The 800 Tiger is similar to BMW F800 - nothing else. You have to challenge the 1200 Triple with the Yamaha and not the 800XC. You can be sure that the big Tiger would match. By the way are also Triumph parts produced in Asia - this argument you can surely forget.
This in the Video is not "Off-Road". For real "Offroad trails" you will get a disaster with this 267kg massive bike. Its too fat. Also a BMW GS is too much - but it is 30kg lighter..and about the Punch more powerful - its faster 0-200kmh. And this is the old generation. This year comes the new Triumph with less weight than the Yamaha and 137hp, next year the new GS with something about the same.. the Tenere was old before it was on the market. The people would have liked more a 900 Tenere
@dakaraabbccdd Not everybody wants a BMW. I'd trust a Yamaha to be more reliable anyday. And yes I have quite a few BMWs already, every Oilhead has let me down mechanically in some way.

Ace review I'm just starting to look at one of these.
Would you really bring these on a huge off road trip though? I think I'd rather something lighter to pick up. Still a great great bike though.
i don´t know what is better yamaha xt 660 z or the bmw 650 gs sertao
Hell of a promo vid!

All things considered, the Super Tenere is the best large capacity adventure bike on the planet.Nice overview gents.👍👍
Where have you been riden it? Because "adventure" with this weight...? Nope!

Yes,I've ridden it,and no,I wouldn't ride any bike this big and heavy off road.

Yamaha really needs an in-between 800cc adventure bike.
Have you considered a Tiger 800XC?
Kari Coad Yes, I definitely have, and may well wind up with one once I make this huge, life-changing decision. :) I just enjoy harping on Yamaha (my overall favorite Japanese brand) for ignoring the US market with the XTZ660.
does this moto have a chain???:S:S
i feel a comparison coming on
where's "off road"? I see only dirty highways
...because with this weight its no capable of any tecnical part of TET or TAT.

For me this bike is just too heavy. I like the XT660z Tenere a lot better especially in the dirt.
Not really off road, more of compacted ez dirt road.
nointeen thousand noin hundred an nointee dollars x'D love that accent

Off-Road ? Seriously ? Where is the off-road here ? You can do this with absolutely EVERY bike. Clowns !
look ... what you did is not offroad !!!
GS wannabe... SuperTen owners will buy GSA one day... so they might just have bought GS at the first place...
