Man your video changed my whole world . I literately jumped out of bed , bought your Kit 5.0 and went to try it !! What the hell I was doing before? how did I do all these paid jobs before lol ! I thought I know what color grading is . Thank you so much man , best purchase in 2019 . I really learned in 10 minutes what I couldn't learn in years . I don't know is it you or I got lucky , but either or I'm so thankful dude !
That channel mixer has changed my entire life. I've been getting so mad with my gh5 lately because i'm constant fighting to get my skin tones right and they were always green/yellow and everyone looked ill. I watched one of your videos before i got vlog so never applied it. I wish i came back sooner, ive fallen in love with this camera again. I've been applying it to all my old footage where I was blaming it on the dark conditions and it's just fixed it all in one click. I honestly can't thank you enough. subbed
Another great video! There are so many ways to do the same things in Lumetri and you show great examples of that here. You are helping me understand the basics of color correction no matter what tools or programs I use. Just by watching you explain it as you do the corrections you give me the best insights on color grading, vlog, and my GH5! Thank you!
There is a software called 3d lut creator and in that software you can input source and target gamut colour primaries and it will calculate the channel mixer values for you to do those changes.
Wow Joonas, thank you so much for this video. There has been many videos out there negatively criticizing the GH5 and its color science. You've just demonstrated the best solution I've seen. Blessings, Mike
Great videos! Could you make a HLG tutorial? I would love to use my GH5/Atomos to create HDR footage but I can't find reliable tutorials. That would be awesome!
Looks great. I've switched over to Resolve for grading V Log, which gives much more control and accuracy with color space transformations. Extended Luma ranges and saturation mapping helps a TON in my experience.
Thank you for your video tutorial - I really like your approach to working with V-log. One question. When your working with v-log can I ask how you set up your sequence in premiere - do you have your colour space set to a Red 709 work space or do you start with a REC 2100 HQ? Just when you drag your clips and add the Lut to change the colour space to 709 - would that negatively effect it? Would love to see a quick video showing your import and export process Thanks for your time Best C
Thank you for the channel mixer tips! What is the best way to automate this? (ie. to avoid having to manually type in the values at the start of each project)
Hi. I m working in GH5s panasonic . I m working the bracheting mode with multiple exposures. Then working the pictures in camera raw. Merging the hdr images and then continue the post processing in photoshop. I ve recently discovered logs and luts. I m not so sure how as a photographer this would give me more dynamic and tonal range than the procedure i m already following. However i find it very useful for filmmakers and videographers. I would like to enlighten me more about that if i m wrong. love your work. Thank you in advance :)
I like the video but don't understand one thing. In 6:41 - why are you using the V-Log to Rec709 LUT in the Creative -> Look? I thought the LUTs are supposed to be used in Basic -> LUT so that all the colour and contrast modifications are applied AFTER the LUT (in the same way as in your first example where you simulate the LUT by Channel Mixer and RGB Curves tweaks). Or not?
Thank you so much for the amazing tips! Is there a similar RGB curves and Channel mixer settings for the LOG function of the Phantom pro4? I usually mix its footage with GH5's and is hard to color match them. I appreciate your time and effort. Keep it up!
The official numbers for phantom 4 d-log are as follows: www.dropbox.com/s/xhy2c5wezepulgh/Screenshot%202018-05-13%2023.56.03.png?dl=0 The sensor might be bit differently calibrated for example d-log on the mavic doesn't look the same as gh5 after correction.
I really like what you've done in this video and I use it for reference a lot. I've noticed though, when I use the same settings you have in channel mixer the pixelation and compression of the footage really shows. In addition to that it causes my renders to slow down greatly. Can you explain these things? Thanks.
If you use premiere, the channel mixer in premier is apparently quite bad. Slow and migth only work in 8bits. I have started to use the channel mixer so that I set lower saturation values to the matrix and the rise the saturation only for midtones. This will give me a cleaner end result.
@@JooWorks The values you have in channel mixer makes the footage look so much better! But it's so slow and almost crashing my fast machine. Is there a LUT you could make that creates the same values as your channel mixer but doesn't slow down renders?
Awesome Channel.. I subbed. Whats your suggestion on Sharpness & Noise reduction settings when using V-Log L? I have found very little information online on this topic. Thanks.
@@jaina_nice There is more and less sophisticated tools. For example the channel mixer is something you can't emulate with any other tool. So if you have the right tools your are good and you know how to use them.
I tried this with a Panasonic DVX-200 and it didn't work as simple as this - it looked very washed out and lacked any saturation. Is this because the Channel mixer settings might be wrong?
Hi. Amazing video! I recently got my V-Log and I have a question - what settings do you use for the color profile? Do you have a specific Sharpness or Noise Reduction values set? I never really played with them, no matter the color profile I used, so I'm just wondering if there is a universally good one :D
Where did you get the numbers for the channel mixer. You criticized youTubers for using their eyes - but no explanations as to how or why each change in the channel mixer is determined. Telling people to copy those numbers is not educational for them. They may as well apply the LUT.
Jim Robinson The LUTs inside the kit are done with the channel mixer, but there is bit more magic done when it comes to the gamma correction and out of gamut colours, so I wound recommend using the luts. I would really like to nerd out and explain how the channel mixer works, because it's so powerful tool, but for now I'll just say that these number have been copied from official numbers given in white papers.

Bassbeats they are for v-log. If g7 stoots v-log they are the same. But I think it doesn't... in the colour kit there is a lut to turn cine-d to v-log. Then you can use the same method as in this video.

Jesse Koivukoski I was about to add it to this tutorial, but didn't in the end... with v-log you can fix wb quite acurately in post. With the sliders in premiere pro you get ok results, but with some lut's you get really good wb fix in post. And when you are shooting in a situation like this where the sun is setting and the wb changes all the time you often end up closer to the correct wb with auto that with manual.
i tried to use your cine d to v-log lut but it just made it crazy grey even when i played with the intensity (i tried cine d -> vlog and another layer vlog -> rec 709). the cine d to rec 709 worked well but 👍
I think v-log in 8bits is rather bad. :-/ I get better result by shooting cine-d (iso 200) and then using a LUT from the KIT to turn that into (semi) v-log. But i still prefer 1080p 50p 10bit v-log over 4k 50p 8bit.
The Film lut has that shift. I should fix that, but it's easy to fix by just adjusting WB to green. But hmm... if you use FCPX it's not that easy. I should fix that.
Okay. I use FCPX actually, but I'm able to fix it just fine with a plugin. Other than that, I love what I'm seeing man! I'm really digging the punchy look. Keep up the good work!

Great work! How do you make your channel mixer numbers? I work with sony, and tried lut creator and colorchecker but the colors are way off every time.. Do you have a consistent way og making the colors right? Or is it maybe because i dont have the bit depth to work with as you have?
I open a frame in lut creator with my color checker in it, and click on the little colorchecker icon. choose x-rite, place the color grid and click match and export the lut. but when i try to use it in photoshop or premiere on a clip with my same Slog it is way over saturated and off in the colors with a lot of banding to... I can maybe send you examples later if i may? I'm off to work now, so a bit later perhaps?
Rule of thumb is to get as close to the end result without any "interpretation" like setting correct values into the program and only after that calibrate with the x-rite. So Log you need to set the channel mixer first (small arrow in top right part of the colour are and choose "create a colour space transform matrix" Then create you matrix) Then set your log settings, then your exposure, then your WB and then you do you calibration. Calibration is always the last thing you do.
FCPX has a "Luma Keyer" effect, but it's mainly used to cut out portions of one clip so you can see another clip behind it.
