@@samdoesarts Never! You are awesomeeeee
I’m guilty of being one of those people who thought that I needed custom brushes to create good art so I bought quite a bit, until one day I realize that I just sucked, so I started working on practicing my foundation instead. This video has solidified that theory. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I never went to buy brushes, but i did always want one solid "sketchy" brush so it would feel more natural to sketch with so i went and found some free ones.
actual same ._.
My favorite brush in procreate(bc that’s what I use) is actually the brush you get when everything is at default in brush studio. So a hard round brush.(idk if that’s already a brush and I just never noticed)
Brushes don't substitute good fundamental drawing skills and draftsmanship but once you get those down they do make things significantly faster and can really help with the final stylized look. So someone who knows this and asks about what brushes a specific artist is using shouldn't be shunned or schooled about how brushes don't matter. They do, as long as you know they are not going to substitute or mask poor drawing skills.
You don't need them before you really figure out what role they may play in your painting process. A nice brush that really makes your drawing flow better, has exact edges you're looking for can encourage someone to draw more. But it is great practice to paint studies with basic round brushes every once in a while so you can remember how to maneuver the core tools to your advantage.
I’d advise that everyone forgo buying brushes. Default brushes will do the job but if you want custom brushes, it’s super easy to make your own by following online tutorials and experimenting with stuff. I often try to make a quick custom brush before every session. It’s just become part of my routine and after some time I’ve been able to garner a collection of my own custom brushes
"I have brushes on my patreon but I don't recommend you spending money on them."
Much respect, dude. So many artists try to desperately make money off of their patreons but you're very upfront and honest. You've got a new sub.
Im gonna coom
@@Luh_katkat No 😟
As someone who painted most of the time using default brushes, I have to say this: brush *does* make a difference, but not in the way people think. Brushes don’t magically boost your fundamentals, so you do not become magically better with them.
However, brush can make a fundamental difference in how your art experience feels. Just like a comfortable pencil, your art flow is just much better with a brush you like. The same way that a brush that you do not like can just make you stop multiple times in the middle of your drawing experience. So yes, continue finding a brush that suits you, so as long as you separate it from the idea that it actually affects your art skills.
I chose my default brushes over fancy brushes because I’ve just gotten more comfortable with them overtime than any fancy ones. And also because default ones ended up just being more versatile to all situations.
ahh yes i would love to see this video concept used on environments

Me, too!
Sam: I don't recommend you buy these brushes for me

@@samdoesarts that would be awesome and so usefull!

" It's all about you. How much your willing to learn, how much your willing to give to this art journey. "
That's deep for me and this really helps me trust my own skill. Thank you!
For me the brushes I use change my drawings so much, a lot of my art style revolves around which brushes I use at the time, and since I figured out how to download brushes on my drawing program my art has become so much more expressive.
Conclusion: Love your default brushes, they confuse you less with all the fancy textures.
I'm literally watching you paint but I'm still amazed at how you make the skin look so smooth and glossy
bruh his 35 minute drawing looks stunning already.

Omg I needed to hear this, I've been searching for this "one magical brush" that everyone is using (or that I thought everyone was using) but it's legit just the default with little changes and their skill. I use to make so many brushes to try and make something as good and still not be happy- now I just go with it and it works! My latest sketches I've been happy with because I'm not trying so hard and just drawing what fields I'm good in. I'm just waiting to get CSP because animation is one of the fields where my style comes to life!
Thank you so much for making this, I've been stressing about brushes too much.
Yeah same! The only thing I'd change is _how to turn them into square brushes._
I just feel like it'd be more fun, or pleasing to draw with. I'd use ibis paint x's default square brushes, but none of them are the actual kind of square brushes I want 😭
Interesting video. I'm doing digital art for maybe like 7, 8 years now, and i never knew when and what ''custom'' brushes to use, especially because i'd draw humans rather than enviorments.
I'd use the default ones all the time, i didin't know what was all the fuss about. Thank you for this video, now i don't feel wierd anymore lol
Lmao same
your art style have changed from the first youtube video . its helping us understand how art style change from time . love your art and natural personality ❤

Love this video Sam! A lot of artists talk about how the brushes you use don't matter but I appreciate how you took that advice a step further to show us why that is! Would definitely love to see this same concept with environments! 🤗🌺🏞️

He’s just a god at digital art. That’s on PERIOD
woow thank you so much for doing this! I have such newfound respect for you not just as an artist now but as a person! seeing you do this with environments would be so helpful!!
Small suggestion for younger artist (I don't post my stuff on the internet tho) I suggest starting with a circle base no matter what, Sam can just draw because he has a lot of experience and has studied art for a while.
I have a friend who paints al their art in Microsoft Paint and it's honestly always so gorgeous. They can make super crisp cartoony images AND highly blended eldritch horrors. It's so wonderful to look at and I admire them for the tools they choose to work with
I agree that we focus too much on brushes. I think a good usage for costume brushes is for concept art, when you need to create fast and with shortcuts. I also think that brushes matter way more for lineart. Once I found this noisy pencil brush sketching was more fun and it looks more organic which I enjoy.
Just you're voice is one of the reason you're the best artist on UA-cam that I'm watching! It's so calming!!
I really love your artstyle. And you did this in just one or two hours !... 😭 Magnifique 😁
Tekid R Oui! C’est magnifique 😃
Totally agree! I use my own custom brushes, but they are mostly basic brushes I’ve tweaked to my liking.. my main brush is a hard, square blocking brush which I’ll use on 90% of my work then add a little extra detail/polish with texture, scatter etc brushes dependant on subject. The base fundamentals are everything, they give the work it’s structure....& tbh only hard blocking brushes can achieve that, unless you use a soft brush with selections, no scatter or full on texture brush can create structure, but a basic hard brush can create anything.
'for all the hair brush people' I DIED AND I DONT EVEN KNOW WHY
I am so relieved! After hearing that I would never do anything expressive without some fancy brushes...you come along and give me a glimpse of hope! You're great! Thank you!
The best thing is playing when you do art to get a grasp of how to use any brushes. Once you get a sense of how to work with your brushes and paints, the art you wanna make follows
That little rant at the end, RESPECT. Great video!
ok but I actually learned so much about digital painting in this video! not just about the brushes, but also just observing his technique and stuff gave me insight into how to improve my art.
keep up the good work man :)
Thank you, Sam. I'm feeling depress after the piece of my drawing because I'm using a normal brush. This helps me a lot. God bless you❤❤❤
I do like this video,I'm trying to get into digital painting as a bit of a hobby and was researching around trying to figure out if I really needed to set up brushes and how to go about it. Just wanting to make sure I'm trying to do things proper starting out and not learning bad habits. Since I know brushes won't make me amazing or anything.
Did really enjoy the video showing that you can do things effectively just with the default brushes as well.
I love how softly you speak. You seem very kind :)
How you draw eyes ESPECIALLY EYELASHES
omg eyelashes mess me up EVERY TIME. i *struggle*. but sam makes everything look so natural and simple.
Thanks for always showing your timelapse it really helps my process✊✊
Wow, you’re so talented. I really like your art style it’s so stylish and unique and I really like the “texture” of this brush.
Your way of speaking is amazing. I've seen so many videos of this topic.... None appealed to my sincere hard work as much as yours. You're genuine. 👍🏼
A very great and helpful video! ♥️ I also agree on the custom brush sets, It's up to you how your artwork will turn out *not* how many custom brushes you have bought. And having too many texture brushes gets confusing, (I think) Its always better to learn how to paint with simple tools first!
good vid again! I recently started painting with only the basic ps hard roundbrush and it's great. Custom brushes can be good to just have some fun with weird textures n stuff but the don't "make or break" a painting. Great video, ppl really should start worrying less about brushes and more about fundamentals :)
LOVE THE WAY TO USE HE BRUSHES AND YOUR ART STYLE
I just started watching you yesterday and now I’m obsessed-
I'm glad I came across this dude, I love finding genuine ppl to follow. It makes social media not so bad
this is nice! i heard once from a ytber that the brushes really matter, and stuff like that
so this is nice!
they even said,
“and if u do traditional sit in the corner and cry”
like man😭😭
This is my motivation to keep drawing. This man right here👌
Hey Sam I was wondering if you could make a video on how you use halftones on stuff like that because I love that type of art style but there’s not that many videos on how to do, thanks and love the videos
Sams outfits are always…chefs kiss..
and loved the video :)
I just love how beautiful his posture is
This is how i would do it:
Default brush: drawing of the thing i’m drawing
Custom brush: stamp of the thang i’m drawing and then some extra
Idk why but I am so obsessed with that thing on ur hand. I feel like I NEED that T-T
I love the fact that Sam sells his brushes and at the same time he says that they aren't the most important thing. It's really cool to see someone who rather be honester than get money (srry about my english)
Finally! Someone really needed to make this video!
Him asking you to not buy his brushes shows that he’s really here for the teaching and well-being of his viewers art!
You know, almost every youtuber is screaming. You are not. And i enjoy that.
I always use the default round brush because every time I tried using a custom brush it immediately felt like I had to adapt my drawing to that brush instead of adapting the brush to my drawing.
Love this! I like to choose weird brushes that don't necessarily suit the piece to see if applying fundamentals can mask that-truthfully the results are usually pretty good.
I love your videos!!! Im just starting with digital art, and you really help me learn how to use color to the fullest extent :D
"i hate seeing my little kids get scammed !" JEJFHejw I LOVE THAT THANKS SAM
Hey ya'll It is just me that Im fallin in love on his drawings hahaha love your art so frekin much😌
Exactly, the brushes don’t matter. Most people think crayon/pencil brushes are too rough, but i’m comfortable using it. So I used it for my first portrait, and it was beautiful. It just depends how you use it, and plus I did NOT spend any money. (except for buying the app.)
I'm just so happy to find this video because I think I've been far too fixated on picking the best brushes for me in the past few weeks that I wasn't able to get anything done!
I would definitely like to see a similar video but for landscapes!
So pretty, I could never have the patience to render the skin and hair.
I don't know how to paint but enjoy a lot see you painting. Also absolutely adore your art style.
I really love your shape language- that curved hard edge of the model's nose is so lovely, in the first portrait. Even though it's such a highlight of the piece, it's not super noticeably defined, so it would be cool if you stretched the contrast- don't be afraid of shadows! That heavy shadow on the neck works perfectly, and it works even better if the same contrast is applied other places (the arm to indicate more roundness, to lift the hair above the face, on the side of her face away from us...) to keep that energy going!
I know this is an older video and there's no doubt you improved a lot since, but thought it was still worth including as I know others (like myself, lol) will see this and take it as a reminder to do the same. ;D
i think i've found my new fav artist in my art journey o.o
you're a master of art dude.. i love your work !
Honestly I am struggling to find any difference. Sam is right, guys. It's all about how you use your tools, not how many you have or what kind of tools you are using. So inspiring, I love this content🤩
thanks for the Video Sam!! It really helps me a lot to learn how to draw and paint again from the begening!
Love your insight on the topic of brushes! Very curious how different (if at all) the matter would be concerning environment painting
You’re such an absolute hero!
That ending - flawless.
coming from a very not professional artist, your art is amazing. and seeing how this is in 2020, i bet your art has improved, but how much can it really? its already so good!
The man being brutally honest at 11:38. Love it!
Your art style is so beautiful! This is a lovely piece
I definitely want to see a version of this with environments. :)
Thank you man for your videos, always reminds us to pay attention to improving our skills and not our "tools" lol. At the end of the day, if you know how to draw, you can draw with the most basic brushes. Thanks again.
"We should all be working towards building up our skill sets not our brush collections" (12:40) Very true!
Your paintings are soo good, i hope one day i can be good as you and just stop worrying about getting better, keep it up man!
It’s true about the brushes! I love your simple but wonderful way of drawing, even with default brush 😅❤️
I always love your videos. You're soothing, educational, and fun.
What the hell is this? You deserve at least 1M subs dudee
THANK YOU!! I use super basic brushes, and I never really understood the hype and importance put on fancy brushes. I think the only custom brush I even use is one I made by literally duplicating a default brush and only changing the shape. I think it’s absolutely crazy people are spending like ten dollars on brushes, when they don’t even need them!!
My first Artist Crush 🙈❤️
Yeah i use the default brushes in the free program i'm using for 90% of the painting and an additional custom brush to add a flare it is very similar to how you used them in this video.
i'd love to see the environment version of this!
I grew up using mainly a ballpoint pen and paper, I'm fine without using custom brushes lol. I use the default brushes in any art app.
Tho, I feel like maybe people use custom brushes just to do something specific to make the process faster. I'm definitely not opposed to making my workflow more efficient.
I’ve made digital pieces before, and I pretty much only used 1-3 brushes max and it still turned out pretty good
Yup - I started with 100's of brushes when I first started digital painting. Now I use 1 Soft Rounded Brush to create all my realism portraits.
