Do you back off a tad on the first lap when the tires are cold? If find them slipping, if you are not careful, I think that's why many rookies spin out

Definitely, yes. I usually brake a little earlier with slightly less full braking force. Ease the car in and get the brakes / tyres working. Normally fine by the end of the second lap at the latest.
