  • This free masterclass takes an in-depth look at PitchLoop89, a new device introduced in Live 11.
The two-part series features Robert Henke, one of the creators of Ableton Live and PitchLoop89. Henke was inspired to create PitchLoop89 by the rare Publison DHM 89 pitch-shifting delay from the '70s. In this series, Henke discusses the unique features of this rare effects unit, how it inspired its software counterpart and using PitchLoop89 for sound design.
In Part 1 ( • Ableton Live PitchLoop... ), Henke discusses the Publison DHM 89 and how to use Publison DHM 89. In Part 2, he takes an in-depth look at using PitchLoop89 and discusses using it with Push.
    Chapters:
    00:00 TITLE & INTRO
    00:41 USING PITCHLOOP89 ON DRUMS
    12:26 PUSH INTEGRATION
Filmed & edited by Frank Zerban.

Just watched both videos in full. Admittedly initially, my understanding of pitch looping was weak and I had no idea how far it could go. The freezing and looping and even serial instances is pretty fucking crazy. Great videos and now I totally have an appreciation for how powerful pitchloop is.

Towards the beginning of the talk, Robert is talking about the process of discovery through experimentation, which is of importance in any sound design process to an extent. The act of accepting an accidental discovery as useful is one thing ( I will know what I want when I find it), the hangover from the 70s / early 80s is the need to get back to something we found and the storage of a preset in order to go back and use it. We would need to save the whole experimental set up (carrier /processor/midi feed channels) to get a certain product. Alternatively, record into an adjacent channel and sample from there.
Loved the Cuckoo clock drone btw❤

After watching parts 1 and 2, I can see another composition being created this weekend using PitchLoop89. Great to listen to this inspiring video from a cofounder of Ableton Live.
