- Sam decides there are too many problems running the charter boat and business. He wants to put everything up for sale, but Buck and Jim bring up the good old times, to stop the sale. Stars Paul Ford, with Sterling Holloway, Les Brown Jr, John Dehner, and a young Clint Howard. The Baileys of Balboa television series premiered the same season as Gilligan Island. The Baileys was cancelled after 26 episodes, but Gilligan went on to enjoy three TV seasons on CBS. Air Date March 18, 1965. Transferred from 16mm b-w film.
brilliant idea putting on a family oriented sitcom at 930 pm
Running it against "Peyton Place" and "Hazel" didn't do it any favors, either.
Thanks for posting. So many reference points in this show. Everywhere John Dehner also as “The Commodore” was a Colombo victim; still active Clint Howard achieved Star Trek Immortality as “Balok”; Paul Ford featured prominently in the times’ “Mad Mad World”. I remember a couple of radio morning show guys speaking of that day’s news of the passing of Stanley Holloway, “this is not who you think it is, this is not Winnie the Pooh , no, not him, this guy was in My Fair Lady, English actor”.
I remember only one line from an episode of the series, Bailey saying “My first aid kit only goes up appendicitis.” Maybe I’ll see that episode again sometime.
The series did, indeed, have an astounding cast.
This was American actor Sterling Holloway..... not to be confused with British actor Stanley Holloway!
@@executivedecision6141 Stanley Holloway in between the Broadway musical and movie versions of MFL starred in the TV sitcom Our Man Higgins with Frank Maxwell and Audrey Totter . He played the butler .

One of three programs Keefe Brasselle produced through his "Richelieu Productions" banner (in partnership with two other production outfits and CBS), and given "preferential" treatement by James T. Aubrey, CBS' ruthless president [and a close friend of Brasselle's; it was said he gave him the chance to produce "BAILEYS", "THE CARA WILLIAMS SHOW" and "THE REPORTER"- without seeing *any* formal pilot episodes for each- because Keefe saved Jim from a mob hit after he roughed up the girlfriend of a prominent mob boss]. Well, all three of those series were cancelled by the end of the 1964-'65 season.....and when it was discovered that Aubrey placed those shows on the schedule mostly because of his ties to Brasselle- among other indiscretions- he was shown the door at the end of February 1965.......and Keefe never produced another series.
By the way, Sol Saks- who was under contract to CBS and the "Creative Consultant" for this series and for Cara Williams- created "BEWITCHED" for Screen Gems/Columbia and wrote the pilot episode. It turned out to be ABC's most successful new series that season.......and was scheduled opposite "PASSWORD" on Thursdays........and the ratings for "BAILEYS" {which followed it} were dragged down with it as a result [being opposite the second weekly edition of "PEYTON PLACE" didn't help, either].

Aubrey originaly wanted to schedule "THE BAILEYS OF BALBOA" right after "THE RED SKELTON HOUR", and tried to convince sponsor Procter & Gamble to move "PETTICOAT JUNCTION" to Mondays. But they controlled the time period following Skelton, and insisted on keeping "their" prorgam right where it was. As P&G was the network's #1 advertiser, Aubrey backed down, and scheduled "BAILEYS" on Thursdays instead.

With all the flashbacks in this episode, it might have been an economy move to use footage already shot, and write the script around the flashbacks.
