IH finally built and excellent transmission! The 50 series tractors should have been the tractor that saved IH. Still a great tractor!

Late '85, early '86, the "New Farmall" aka the Magnum was to debut. Powershift, Hydro-mech, and the STS were to be options on them.

The Case IH tractors that were developed after the merger, used a lot of IH transaxle componentry, simply because it was much better than the Case equivilent. Even had IH Part Numbers on said components.
Case really fouled up by scrapping these and the newly developed Series 3 'Snoopies' !

The doors sure weren't the best, especially in the wind but still beat the heck out of stumbling in and out of a soundgard cab. They were the best, your looking at the forerunner of the Magnum, no better transmission and engine combination made.

@@derrickzenner9300 the original magnum, aka the New Farmall, was to launch in December of 1985.
The magnum is a IH design, all Tenneco did was shoehorn a Cummins engine in place of the IH 466

@@derrickzenner9300 You do realize they are still around as the largest North American, actually only and last North American owned Truck Builder Navistar International?
Also 1981 wouldn't have done much, the agricultural economy was garbage from 79-85, form 85-90 it came back, so it would have worked if their board wasn't morons, but they were. Never hiring McCardell would have saved IH.
Also John Deere leased out most of its factory space during this time(like to trailer house builders)...Deere peaked too then as they never and still haven't recovered to their size and its not just because of automation, its due to sales.

@J-1410 I seen somewhere ih was lookin to put a 500+ ci engine in the "new magnum" wish I coulda seen that instead of the 8 3 cummins

@@derrickzenner9300yeah it wasn't the tractors that killed ih. The tractors were 10x better than any soundgaurd. And the 8 spd powershift in the 20-40 series couldn't handle anything above 180hp. 4840s were smoking clutches left and right when you actually put something behind those paper weights. It was the ceo that killed off international harvester ag division

@65882Plus2 If you're still around around, please add the words "New Number One" to the title of these two videos. People (IH fans) need to be able to find this when searching on those words. Thanks!

Had a 4440 back then.Tried a 5088 and heard that John Deere was coming out with a new line of row crop tractors in 1982.The result was that we purchased a new 4450 MFWD.That Quad Range had a about 10 years of being on the market at this point in time.Wherer was the comparison to similar MF,AC,Ford,White and Case tractors in 1981?The 466 cid in the JD tractors delivered.

What would you look for when buying a used tractor? are there any older units that will perform most same tasks a modern day tractor could manage, but that won't cost me much and could be found at an auction. Any advice would be appreciated. If you have any recommendation for videos or sites where I can learn more about tractors i'd be much obliged. Thanks

Well the pressure from the hydraulic pumps are slower and they won't go 30mph like the new ones, but otherwise they aren't much different.

  • @Sjanzo

Quad range sucked. annoying slot shifting, no foot throttle (as most American tractors those days) Powershift of the Case 1370 wasnt up to European standards either. (Not that there were that many triple powershifts in Europe those days, but the dualpower, multipower and torque amplifier, were a lot nicer)
Never tried a US built IH though, but would love to.
