Thank you for sharing and reviewing Kyle! This one is on my short list for feb next year! Great. Did you get feedback from the BMW guys regarding the route-planning delay and overheating hiccup?
I’m glad for this review as there are so many people bashing it without actually having the means of trying it or purchasing. I’ve been in the i5 and i7 - and test drove every single EV in the UK market. The i5 is by far the best.
I still think the i4 makes some more sense since it’s a hatchback. They just need to take away the hump, push the motor a bit further and stretch the seating area by that amount and they have the best possible platform for bmw ev for years to come
Route planning in the BMW app is awesome. Set arrival state of charge, destination state of charge, choose charges etc. and better than Tesla app routing. Way more options for getting there how you want - out of spec style. Car should also have similar options. We always use app in the i4. 22:48
Yes agree about the low speed calibration, finally was able to test drive a mini se (the old one) and it was SO smooth at low speed. Loved it so much and surprisingly felt like a Mini
A friend of mine who owns a BMW IX had a light collision with road debris that punctured the front passenger bumper. It hit some critical electronics and rendered the car undriveable. It was at the dealer for 3 months and cost $20,000 to fix. I understand modern cars are expensive to fix but why BMW placed critical electronics directly behind the plastic bumper is a real problem.
@@0-Will-0 They do, they ask the group that buys the most, for the 7-series that are the Chinese.... That is how you end up with a massive chrome grill and LED's that can change colour all over the interior.
I definitely want to test drive it! I really like the new 5 contrary to others (so it seems), it really is a modern, more clear and sleek design and since the current BMW EVs are some of the best in the market, the new i5 should be a great car. I'm not in the market for one - I'm young and drive an old E39, but I am very interested to see what now almost 30 years of progress have done to the 5.
I'm with you. I dislike most modern BMW designs, but I like the i5 inside and out. I'm youngish (32) and considering getting one as a daily to complement my 911 for family duty. With oversupply in the EV market and $7500 tax credit, should be able to score crazy cheap lease deals on one in the next year.
I think I could live with this if it wasn't for the stupid screen, at least it isn't a suv, even though way to big. The e39 has hands down a 100 times nicer and more luxuryor. What's even the point of the stuff they load them up with today. It cool for 5 minutes and then you just want to get on with it. Navigation as standard, how lost do you have to be to need it for everyday. bleeh
@@Iceeeen unfortunately big screens are becoming the norm as they all try to copy Tesla. I'm glad they at least kept some controls like the rotary dial. It has more physical controls than Audi and Merc.
Since UA-cam prevents you from including copywritten music in a video when you check out the audio system why not use a simple sound check audio file through the USB port which should work on any car. Just a thought to make it so we can "hear" the audio system and this would improve your video content?

I've owned a BMW i4 eDrive 40 for about a year now and I wish I would have waited for the i5, if only because of the roomier interior it provides over the "coupe" configuration of the smaller i4. The mechanicals are all the same....precise steering, nice ride (along with the adaptive suspension), fast enough. And the range has been a pleasant surprise, as it is clearly BMW policy to under promise in that regard. On a recent trip, I drove 243 miles with an indicated remaining range 110 miles (far more than the advertised 282). I'm sure the i5, with a promised figure of 295 miles, can easily exceed that. I average about 3.7 miles per KWH with the same drivetrain, which is very good as far as I can tell.
Great point, I was hold up taken the i4 because its small inside, but I like the hatch in the back - BMW did not have a longer distance EV for me in the lineup, maybe this one is. Last year there were no i5 available yet - there is always a way to trade "up" :)
Did you think the i4M50 was worth 20k more than your i4M40? I ordered an i5 40 over the 60 because 20k for the speed and HP didn’t justify it for me. I’m just trying to pick your brain and see if I should order the faster version.
@@meech3889 I have the i4 eDrive 40, which is the single engine, slower version. All of the reviews I saw mentioned that the single motor version was a better balanced car in terms of ride and handling. It's still a very fast car, but I am drawn to a BMW because I wanted a balanced chassis. Paying $20K more for the M50 for better acceleration but a more unbalanced chassis just didn't appeal to me.
@@joemartino6976 Thanks for replying! I was feeling the same way I can’t justify the 20k upcharge especially since the 40 version is fast as well. TBH it feels faster than what BMW lists it as I drove both I wasn’t overly impressed with the 60 version of the i5.

I agree the grill is not as bad, but it still has a large piano black plastic grill and what purpose does it serve? Is it just ornamental? This reminds me of what BMW did to the MINI Cooper design with each iteration. Introducing skeuomorphism into when there was a need to eliminate or replace certain functionalities. Replacing a functioning air intake hood scoop with a fake one (the transition from supercharging to turbo). Eliminating the center speedo but retaining the circular trim and dropping in a rectangular infotainment system with ornamental “spacer” plastic. Maybe the grill will slowly become smaller with each design refresh.
I just checked the pricing and in our country this costs almost as much as a Porsche Taycan 4S, which has similar stats. So if you dont need a bigger trunk and slightly bigger backseat, I can't see people buying the M60 model. Of course family with bigger children need more space, so maybe for them. My kids are already out of the house...
Hmm last year when Bjørn reviewed the i4 it also had a cooling system fault due to a defect which severely limited his charging. Just a coincidence that now another press car BMW EV seems to be defective again.

That's the Mercedes CLA and has been known for a while now. The CLA concept was revealed at the IAA in Munich in September. Except for the head and backlights, the rims and the all-glass roof the outside styling will be identical to the concept. At the inside they definitely keep the pillar-to-pillar screen on the dashboard. The revealed stats of the biggest battery CLA model are 4,75m length, 250kW max charging, 465 miles of range with a 90.x kWh battery. The CLA launches early 2025 with a starting price of slightly under 50k. Big battery model will most likely start around 60k. They will also bring a station wagon version of the CLA called CLA Shooting Brake.
Because he can't compare it to the i4 since they're too similar. I can see in the future them dropping the Gran Coupe version of the i4 and going with the 2-door coupe model instead, opting to leave the 4-door midsize option to the i5.
Kyle you need to start announcing where you'll be participating on events. You've just been on my village, should I've known that I would have gone to meet you and drive you around the city on my model Y.
BMW could choosen a different design line. in the past they had so nice cars with a low front, which would be good to develop an good, sleek car. just look for 850csi, M1, z1
Hi Kyle, I’ve owned 19 Beemers over 40 years of driving and I think BMW swapped an innovative and sustainable future for continued profitability when they reverted to using ICE infrastructure rather than developing what they’d learned with the i3. It’s as if they’d learned ‘what not to do’ rather than ‘what to do’. I know you love the driver assistance tech, but I’d swap the tech required to compete with Tesla for a low weight, ground up EV capable of doing a genuine 275 miles in adverse conditions that used the Tesla charging network. Geoff
Nonsense, the i3 sold like crap hence why there is no second gen. Vast majority of BMW buyers want their car to look like a normal car not an ugly spaceship no need for it to be its own platform, although if you want that they have in the iX (although that isn’t selling well either)
@@doomsday9973 there was no 2nd gen i3 because it was a loss leader and because BMW sales staff had no idea what they were dealing with. Their lack of motivation, aside from continuing the arrogant attitude of treating customers like sales commission cash cows and cars that sell themselves due to BIK, did more harm than good, as the Leaf and Zoe left the i3 for dead. The bizarre range extender is what made an otherwise excellent city car a complete farce! That is why the i3 was discontinued.
@@doomsday9973 quite daring. Built from the ground up to be an EV. Fabulous design. Had it been released today, BMW would not be abled to keep up with demand. Compact City EVs would solve a lot of issues. However, measuring the battery capacity in Amp Hours was as stupid as the range extender!
Funny that the twisty road where you drove it's pretty close to my parents house, I've driven that twisty road probably a thousand times xD P.S. you turned arround but further ahead the roads are pretty epic also ;) I know you didn't have a lot of time though.
Wery awkward backseat fold down ! Was it just a release handle in the trunk ? No spring loaded seat ? Can’t it be released from the cabin ? You have to walk around the car to fold down the seats,,,, what a design flaw !
It’s so interesting how new EVs are always being compared to Tesla which is like the default gold standard for EV execution. So I don’t really know how to justify paying premium for a bmw when they are just playing catch up to a less expensive car
@@pete64041 I do like the X5 series hybrids. But in line with his video of being a full electric car, that's what I'm after, not a hybrid. I currently have a Hennessy Raptor pickup and love the thing so for me it's not about saving money or mileage. It's about the range for a full electric car and I want a BMW.
There will be no major change in non Tesla charging reliability until the EV manufacturers start putting pressure on the EVSE providers to improve. It is costing the CCS EV manufacturers sales. Dave’s selling the Lucid is a perfect example. EA and others have little incentive to fix the infrastructure. If my 640i GT had been an EV, I’d still own it.
LMFAO. There are way more reliable EV:s on the market than Tesla. My friends Tesla has been in repair for 3 months waiting for parts. What kind of car company does things like that? In Europe the Ionity Network is great, have been on multiple long trips with my EV, without a single charging issue.
No electric please 💀. Electric vehicles are becoming flops in America and pleaseeeee stop putting a 3 cylinder in the cars 😭😭 and don’t make them so cheap plastic cars from Nissan. LOVE THEM but just 📉
Finally a nice looking grille on a BMW. You mentioned that this i5 is quieter than the EQE. But then you also said that there was a good amount of wind noise around head level, when you were driving. So which is quieter, the i5 or the EQE?
Appreciate how thorough the review is.. Would be interested to see your review on the ICE too even if its just the 530 to see how that feels to drive too! To me this 5 series design almost looks a little like BMWs version of an American muscle car so it'll be interesting to see the M5.
22:25 I could be wrong but I think 50% would be the ideal for storage as that is where the negative and positive charges are equal. I know that is true for phones and laptops, I assume or would be the same for a car.
The obvious reason for the E40 to weigh hundreds of pounds more than a Model S P85 is to be really quiet. Missing that is disappointing. At least they dropped the tall grille and avoided the i7's stacked healights.
Is it just me, or does this look very generic next to past generations of the car? The Passat, ID.7, Accord, and now 5 series all have the same back end. I’m all for taking chances, but where’s the BWM identity in the back? The hoffmeister kink is barely implied. I do appreciate that the grille is not scaled up to 400% like other recent models, though.
Love the content and would love to hear all the details. Unfortunately, ANOTHER HOUR long video I don't have time to sit down and watched. Liked what I saw as I fast-forwarded through the whole thing. Kyle does great work, just need to cut out some of the repetitive rambling to get to the point faster. Likely would end up with a lot more views. Just my 2-cents. Looks like a great car. But any car pushing over $80,000 should have a bare, bare minimum of 300 real world miles in range.

I can see in the future them dropping the Gran Coupe version of the i4 and going with the 2-door coupe model instead, opting to leave the 4-door midsize option to the i5.
Was that about a dozen stops over 2000km (roughly 1240 miles)? Stopping approximately every 100 miles? Not good.
Carwow said they could hear water dripping with AC on, on the i5. Did you have the same issue?
Kyle you need to start announcing where you'll be participating on events. You've just been on my village, should I've known that I would have gone to meet you and drive you around the city on my model Y.
Only the myr 2024 after April 2023 iX will get OTA update for full autonomous driving! I have the bad iX ( 2023 myr)
Looks like you're till in Europe? I thought you were going to the main auto show there in Germany. Where's the videos from that?
When will it be in the USA?
BMW could choosen a different design line. in the past they had so nice cars with a low front, which would be good to develop an good, sleek car.
just look for 850csi, M1, z1
How does this compare to the base Taycan or Taycan 4S sedan in your opinion?
What about the cop version?
I want a BMW EV, but the lack of NACS is a big deterrent for me.
These cars at these prices and current interest rates , make them only watchable on UA-cam
Geoff
Well said! My sentiments exactly!
@@LysanderLH it was a hideous piece of subcompact junk with terrible range that even needed custom tires. Ridiculous.
Why don't they make the floor in the rear flat, being that it is an electric car, such as Tesla, and Lucid.
Funny that the twisty road where you drove it's pretty close to my parents house, I've driven that twisty road probably a thousand times xD P.S. you turned arround but further ahead the roads are pretty epic also ;) I know you didn't have a lot of time though.
Wow so nice, you still have parents!
Cool story bro.
That tan/greenish color interior on the M60 is merino leather, not veganza.
Wery awkward backseat fold down ! Was it just a release handle in the trunk ? No spring loaded seat ? Can’t it be released from the cabin ? You have to walk around the car to fold down the seats,,,, what a design flaw !
they try to fake a muffler on the M BMW FR?
Super cool
That's a good looking BMA. It has mercedes vibes in its design DNA
It’s so interesting how new EVs are always being compared to Tesla which is like the default gold standard for EV execution. So I don’t really know how to justify paying premium for a bmw when they are just playing catch up to a less expensive car
This makes me miss my E39 540i.
If I can get an honest 210- 220 mi in between charges on road trips, I think I'd be good to go with this car.
Just get a PHEV BMW and then no waiting
@@pete64041 They don't have the range in electric that I want.
@@trullmann My X50e gets around 55 miles...Which is more than i do on the daily...Engine for road trips...It's the perfect car...
What’s the exterior cooor on this model ?
Do people even use backseat pockets?
i4 Hatch Back is way to go, they could just make this Bigger Size and Better interior i4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s my problem with the Tesla, you can’t get the seat low enough. BMW has overall best seats of the all car manufacturers.
Waittttt the blue Nissan rogue sport behind Kyle 😭☠️ can that come in America LOL
No electric please 💀. Electric vehicles are becoming flops in America and pleaseeeee stop putting a 3 cylinder in the cars 😭😭 and don’t make them so cheap plastic cars from Nissan. LOVE THEM but just 📉
How does it work guys? Do you buy a new and new car every time and then sell it after a short time?
Bmw i5 vs Id.7 for comfort which one is better?
Maybe the id7, but the i5 maybe the more sporty
300 miles of range means nothing to non-US engineers. 500+ km range would be nice (instead of 475 km)
To me this 5 series design almost looks a little like BMWs version of an American muscle car so it'll be interesting to see the M5.
sooo....the i5 M60 or the Lucid Grand Tour????
Lucid?? the most unreliable EV on the market?
Will tjere be a rourinf vrsion ?
2024
Thx for the vid #4
Thanks for watching!
22:25 I could be wrong but I think 50% would be the ideal for storage as that is where the negative and positive charges are equal. I know that is true for phones and laptops, I assume or would be the same for a car.
Marketing dept:"We could fit a frunk"
Engineering dept:"No way"
Looks pretty good. Looking forward to the i2 EV with a Limited Slip Differential.
The obvious reason for the E40 to weigh hundreds of pounds more than a Model S P85 is to be really quiet. Missing that is disappointing. At least they dropped the tall grille and avoided the i7's stacked healights.
Glad you told them the need for NACS access. Come on BMW (and Porsche) make a NACS announcement. Until then I’ll stick with Tesla.
Over an hour… I will need to circle back when I can set aside that kind of time.
Well the site here, your site, has caused the search feature to disappear. Hmm? Why? So.., only a person with nearly infinite free time could find the particular review. This observation is made for your benefit really.
23:09 it felt good because it WAS leather😂
Somebody should call the BMW design department and tell them that they're all fired because they've absolutely lost the plot.
BMW is not EV optimized... Diesel, gas, or hybrid...? Driveshaft tunnel in a full EV...cmon😊
Not even gonna mention route planning...
BMW is showing effort 💯
"the dark headliner is absolutely epic." Really? Epic?
The power delimit after you driving hard for like 1-2 minutes is ridiculous. Remind me of Teslas from 5 years ago. Currently Teslas still do but you have to really cool them
