Hi Scotty my accord 2003 is blowing cold air on driver side passenger side is nice and warm I all ready change the water valve and Heater Regulator Motor . I live in New York and the winter is very cold
The garden hose flush method is great, however, Scotty did not mention that it should be low pressure. DO NOT turn the hose on hard, because the the high pressure can blow the seals out and then you have a real problem. Low pressure only.
Scotty, you are one of the finest men around. Making so many videos and helping everyone for free. You a real delight to watch and learn from. And that bike in the intro, 😎. Thank you! 🤓👍👍
I watch your videos just for fun and to learn. You have the best car videos on the internet, period. Your personality really does a lot to make the video more informative and fun!
Thanks buddy! All sorted thanks to your advice!!! I never would have thought that low coolant would affect the heater. 5 stars mate for making fun to watch educational vids!
I came looking for this video because if it wasn't for this video Scotty maid I would've ordered a new heater core because my heater wasn't working. I changed my thermostat and it worked. I laughed because I had no idea it was that. Thanks scotty!
Also, If you arent getting heat and its none of the problems Scotty talked about, check your "Blend Door" or Blend Door Actuator. Its a door that seperates the cold a/c air and the heater air. Mine was stuck in the middle and when i turned on my heat it came out cool.
Love your shows, so educational, keep them coming. I cannot do the most of the work but at least I can talk intelligently with the mechanic. Thanks so much.
@ssl668 generally the cores need replacing when that crapped out. But, of course, check to see if the cooling system has no air in it, we mechanics use vacuum systems to suck all the air out and know there's none left in.
That's often a symptom of a clogged up heater core, the water can't flow fast enough so you get heat only a short time, then the water is out of heat and new hot water can't get in fast enough. Try flushing it out BEFORE replacing it, as replacement is normally rather expensive. Scotty Kilmer
Gotta love how Scotty saves the day so simple, quick & PROPER!!! EACH time I have an issue w/my car & check 1st w/Scottys channel, my problems get identified & resolved as here w/coolant this time!!! Thank You once again Scotty!!!!
Damn, Mr. Kilner. You know how to really fix all these things. I took 4 years of Autos classes at my HS (best Hs Shop in the state next to College ones) and I learned a lot. Our teacher wrote two books which are used in many tech schools and looking at your videos reminds me of those days. Thanks to those classes and your vids I am starting to remember how to fix many things again. Thank you.
My heating hasn't been working for over 3 weeks and I know nothing about cars. I finally booked it in to get fixed tomorrow but thought I would have a quick search and came accross your video. The first thing I checked was the coolant which was near empty. I bought some from my local garage and filled it and within seconds I was getting hot air again!!! Thank you so much, you have saved me aair few ££££££s

Just had garage (too cold.out to do myself) flush my heater core on 2007 Buick Allure 3.8 Was pumping cold air lower vents and ambient out of upper vents (-13 celcius Ontario Canada) Mechanic never seen such a dirty core. Snowing today and boy is the heat in the car beautiful. Thanks Scotty.
insane job, takes 6.5 hours of labor. HEATER CORE REPLACEMENT REMOVAL PROCEDURE Remove the HVAC module. See: Heating and Air Conditioning\Housing Assembly HVAC\Service and Repair Turn the HVAC module over. Remove the heater core case cover screws and cover. Remove the heater core bracket screws and brackets. Remove the heater core. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE Install the heater core to the module.
@godgotme22 no, it doesn't, it has a blend door inside the dash that lets hot air get into the cabin. The heater core always has hot water flowing inside in that design. Scotty
Hi Scotty - awesome video. I have a 2007 Chevy Uplander that will only heat while driving. When I stop moving and idle it will slowly return to cold air. I think there is an air pocket in the pump/tubing or something like that - any ideas how to correct this? Thanks!!!
@tH3FtoN3 NO, they often hiss as doors open and close and the refrigerant starts flowing. If you have dual AC controls, the passenger side is breaking down. If you don't, it's just low on refrigerant probably. Scotty
I have a 2007 Mercury Monterey that when the AC is on the driver side blows hot air and passenger blows cold air then when the heat is on drivers side blows hot and passenger blows cold. anybody know how to fix this problem
@naimfree83 Heater core, as they often get holes and do that. If it was the hose, it would be leaking all the time, whether you turned the heater on or not. Scotty
Why did u watch his vid if his voice is so annoying? Get A Life Alaa Shabaneh...by the way your name is complicated its probably annoying trying to pronounce it!
He is trying to talk loud and clear so that you pick up everything he is saying and I find him very easy to understand, very clearly. He never mumbles and I never miss a word. You try straining your voice and see how you sound.
I will if anyone ever wants to pay for one, here in texas it's hot, and when heaters break we mainly disconnect them by splicing the heater hoses together under the hood and living without heat.
@ShortyzProductionz your blend door system inside the dash is breaking down, probably a broken or stuck blend door or actuator. Time to take the dash apart if you want it fixed.
@MrShuaTube depends on the car. Fords, for example, break the blend doors inside the dash, so hot air stays inside the heater box and doesn't blow on you. Many cars break like this comonly. Scotty
This man knows his work.. I just did exactly what he said with the control value with switch.. On the first try now my heat is hotter than ever my wife really appreciate it thanks🎉
@sReychaRm Either the heater core is clogged and needs cleaning out or replacing, or the blend door is stuck and won't fully open. Try flushing it out first, the other two options are VERY expensive. Scotty
Yea, in the sixties volvos made long lasting low maintenance cars, my aunt had one that went 350 thousand miles relatively trouble free. NOT any more, they are in my opinion one of the poorest made expensive cars out there. All my customers who used to have them said they were the worse cars they ever had, and never woul buy another one. Scotty Kilmer

@julio231979 they go into the firewall to the heater, two of them close together. Ifyou can't figure it out, any auto parts store guy can show you if you drive there. Scotty
@woodlandcammo27 Electrical problems on an old Ford, that's not surprising. Start by checking all the fuses and running power to the wiper motor and blower. If they work with power, find where the short in the wiring it. Scotty
@18kswag you're stuck on default position, check for a vacuum leaks on the system if an older car. If newer, the dash needs taking apart to fix the blend door system.
Wow. Since I discovered your videos I've been watching them like everyday. It just so happens that I'm having heater problems. I have a 98 Honda Civic ex sedan. The thermostat was replaced about a month ago thinking that was the problem. Heater still doesn't work. I'll use this video as reference. Thanks for your channel
@altpath I would assume the heater core was leaking, so they did that to stop it. connect it, then see if coolant leaks inside the dash. If so, time for a NEW very expensive heater core job on that crazy design, the book calls for almost 8 hours labor.
yes, replacing it is a royal pain though. Here in houston it's hot most of the time, so we just cut the hoses going to the heater core and splice em together with a 2 dollar splice kit. Then it can't leak anymore, as we dont' need heat anyway.
@SingTheSorrow971 the blend door is inside the dash, a real COW to access. I would advise paying a mechanic who knows his stuff to analyze it with his fancy computer which can operate the blend doors and test them first. Scotty
do all this, and make sure the heater control valve is opening. Really flush the heater core for 20 minutes or so, and PRAY the heater core isn't just shot. They are a pain to replace
If you mean the fan does not blow at all, yes, it could be the fan blower motor. Just access the motor under the dash and hot wire it with electricity from the battery using small jumper wires. If the motor does not blow, replace it. If it does blow then, find the electrical short going to it. Normally it's just a worn out motor though. scotty Kilmer
doesn't matter which hose you use, but you mentioned replacing the heater core, so flushing should not be needed as that's brand new. I would guess electronic control problem myself in side the dash, those are known for that.
Hey Scotty, Well, after, ......to be honest.... AVOIDING this 'no heater' issue for a year, I decided to flush the core. It was spotless..... after a lil investigating, it turned out, that under the dash, the box under the core, ...the lever was moving but the cable was bound, so I forced the doors open manually...VOILA, heat enough to burn the hair off my legs! lol. Thanks for responding, just thought I'd throw it out there, .....follow the lever cable, guys, make sure it's opening! lol.
the low side fitting can be found by following the thicker hose from the compressor back to the firewall, it's often near the firewall. The high side one is on the thinner hose, follow that hose from the firewall back towards the condenser to find it
head gasket job on that min van is hellacious. But if you get low on coolant, you will have the same symptoms of cold hoses and parts. So do my video tests "how to fix an overheating engine" and pray it's one of those instead.
Scotty, I think this is a good explanation for my issue with a 1966 Ford F100. I actually replaced the heater core, which only took about 20 minutes, but noticed no water coming from the engine, and the temp gauge read C. So I will be replacing the thermostat next. Thanks,
heater cores do not click, but blend doors that open and close to let heat into the cab do that. Check that first. If you like my car help, be sure to watch my live car talk show every saturday morning at 10 AM CST on google events. Just go to my scotty kilmer channel on youtube saturday morning at 10, and click on the google plus icon on the top right corner. That takes you to the event where you can ask me questions Live. You do have to be a member of google plus, but that's free
if both hoses are hot, don't worry about the valve, it's working (and some don't even use valves, they have hot water in them all the time, only the blend doors in the dash open and close to let you feel the heat inside.) But fix the leak in the radiator first, air in the system will cause no heat too.
IF the fan motor is really blowing full blast, something is restricting flow, such as kleenex stuck inside the vent intake, or broken blend doors restricting flow
@diva11111111 heaters on those are electronically controlled, and that breaks down in dodges all the time, costing a fortune to tear the dash down. check the fuse first for the lighter, then change the lighter assembly if that's not it. Scotty
Well, just try everything I suggest in this video and hope one of them works. Cause those Caddies are computer run heating systems and often the electronics go bad and are Expensive as can be to fix. Good Luck, Scotty Kilmer
@godgotme22 bad blend doors are common on all fords, requiring taking the dash apart. IF both of your heater hoses going into the firewall are hot, that's probably it unfortunately.
@reddsofine1 You have a control unit problem, and those things are complex in MITS, everything is electronic. Many guys will just bypass all that crap by putting in a manual valve for heat that they can open and close by hand when opening the hood on old things like that. Scotty
Thank you so much for all of your trouble shooting tips. This video really helped. My problem with my heat was an Actuator that opens the door to let the hot water in, to heat the car. Not an easy fix but I figured out the problem with your help. Thanks again!
realize heater cores can corrode internally, look fine, but won't dissipate heat. I would just have replaced the core when doing all that work. But, check the blend doors in the dash, if they don't work right heat will not get hot
if the fans do come on and it doesn't overheat, live with that. as for heat inside all the time, the dash is stuck on head, and that baby is all electronically controlled. Blend door is probably stuck on heat, have to take the dash apart to fix that
@MrBj2020 An overheating car can be caused by tons of things, and when they overheat, they lose coolant and the heater core will be empty and not create heat. Watch my other video, "how to fix an overheating engine" Good Luck
@lilblueguy that's a big giant job, not really a do it yourself job cause the head has to be checked for cracks and warpage by a machine shop anyway. And you need tons of expensive tools, like good torque wrenches, and years of experience to do it without messing something up. engine tolerances are VERY tight. Scotty
the flashing light means the AC system has a problem. MANY things can do that, you need a dealer level scan tool like I have to analyze the codes. So find a guy like me to do that for you.
they could be, french cars tend to have electrical problems as they age. Check the dash for bad fuses or bad wiring first, and pray it's not in a control module or Ac/Heat computer control system, they are VERY complex.
of course check the fan motor first by hot wiring it from the battery with jumper wires. motors oftne burn out. they use electronic heater valves hiding inside the dash and are cows to get to. good luck, on that.
a short exists on that circuit, you have to trace it down. see my video "finding the source of electrical shorts". Scotty Kilmer you’re great
Scotty Kilmer you should tell not to much pressure of water from hose just gentle or damage will happen
@Scotty Kilmer Have a heater problem. My 1994 Camaro blows out cold air. Although at times it blows out warm air.

Scotty
Thank you so much man. You saved me so much money and headaches with all your videos. THANK YOU!!
@Davidmex10 it needs a new heater core inside the dash
@rthom86 I talk about flushing it both ways, forwards and backwards. You really need to do both. Scotty
@reddsofine1 You have a control unit problem, and those things are complex in MITS, everything is electronic. Many guys will just bypass all that crap by putting in a manual valve for heat that they can open and close by hand when opening the hood on old things like that. Scotty
@jaequon Blower motors are easy to replace, you can get a rebuilt motor cheap enough from a discount auto parts store. Scotty
Thank you so much for all of your trouble shooting tips. This video really helped. My problem with my heat was an Actuator that opens the door to let the hot water in, to heat the car. Not an easy fix but I figured out the problem with your help. Thanks again!
@leti729 Odds are you are low on coolant, OR the heater core is clogged. Scotty
realize heater cores can corrode internally, look fine, but won't dissipate heat. I would just have replaced the core when doing all that work. But, check the blend doors in the dash, if they don't work right heat will not get hot
Acura RSX has that problem often, HCV jamming so I brush it and lube and good as new. Definitly a life saver when its 32f or below. Ty Scotty
Wow! Scotty your video on diagnosing heater problems is excellent! You are the man!!
if the fans do come on and it doesn't overheat, live with that. as for heat inside all the time, the dash is stuck on head, and that baby is all electronically controlled.
Scotty
On my 2005 Pilot all I had to do to get heat back was tighten the screw on the heater control valve. Worked like a charm, you didn't mention this.
the flashing light means the AC system has a problem. MANY things can do that, you need a dealer level scan tool like I have to analyze the codes. So find a guy like me to do that for you.
@aztecking610 Bad blend doors are the most common problem for that. Scotty
@ks1045 often a clogged heater core, try flushing it out
I fixed my car in 5 minutes! It was the heating control valve. Thank you so much.
Oldie but a goodie! Good advice Scotty!
@Vacmasterthegreat try under the hood by the firewall, it could be sticking
they could be, french cars tend to have electrical problems as they age.
@fastvpbt1 Yes, they often stick and need replacing. Scotty
a short exists on that circuit, you have to trace it down. see my video "finding the source of electrical shorts". @jdboib Often a clogged heater core, try flushing it out first.
thanks scotty for this video - i am car clueless - very informative its allowed my to do my own basic check my partners car to find out why he heater was not working - saved me some money too.
lol the lip syncing at the end was epic!!
Great little vid sir !!
if fan is blowing full speed and not just weakly turning, then blend doors are often stuck shut not letting air pass
i like scotty he has good answerers watched him for years still smart as ever good guy
way cool
