  • This is a good warm up drill for beginners and advanced guys alike. This partner drill does a number of different things all at once.
    1. It helps you turn your hips over on your body kicks.
    2. It provide a dynamic stretch and opens up your hips.
    3. It gives you a nice calf work out.
I usually have my students do a 30 second interval for each leg, while switching with one another every 30 seconds as well. You can do 1 minute intervals as well if you feel like being mean. Ha!
Hope you guys enjoy it! Feel free to contact me with any questions!

Can you post a video on head kick mobility? I am having problems turning my hip over at that height.

great drill, have been doing this for a while. however, i have a big problem with inflexible hips that runs iin my family, so i don't even get near as high while maintaining the ability to turn my hips without it hurting like hell. What can i do against that? Stretching seems to help very little.

I have similar hip issues. Any advice welcome on helping with flexibility to get higher reach.

You might be stretching wrong. Your hip has muscles running every which way over it. You should be doing like 6-7 different stretches for your hips if it's that bad. UA-cam stretches that olympic lifters do for hip mobility. It sounds silly but they have the most flexible hips out there and there stretching will help

It's probably all in the form. This is a very good drill for only one aspect of a fairly technical kick. Inflexibility is but one thing to hold you back.
If I kick too high...I just get rejected by my mobility. Not hurt, for my technique otherwise is solid.
But to answer it directly. You must step hard into your kick and allow your weight to flow in the vector your leg is creating.

Art Golden Did It in my Gym by making a tower consisting of hitting pads (the big ones).
Each time it decreases to sting in the tendons I added a new one on top.
Really helped me with my side kick. ( I am cursed with extreme stiffness :< )
